In this study, we investigated anti-oxidative and anti-bacterial constituents from Rhododendron weyrichii leaves. DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activities were screened for the ethanol extract and solvent fractions. Potent scavenging activities were appeared from the extract, ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and n-butanol (BuOH) fractions. Upon the anti-bacterial tests using Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes, extract, n-hexane (Hex) and EtOAc fractions showed strong activities. To isolate the active constituents, the EtOAc fraction was further purified to afford five phytochemicals; ursolic acid (1), corosolic acid (2), asiatic acid (3), astragalin (4) and isoquercetin (5). All of the compounds 1-5 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Among the isolates, the compound 4 and 5 showed strong DPPH and ABTS+ radical scavenging activities. Also, compound 3 exhibited the most potent anti-bacterial activity. In addition, the content of astragalin isolated from this plant was determined by UPLC and the quantity was about 8.1 mg/g for the 70% ethanol extract and 34.8 mg/g for the EtOAc fraction. Based on these results, it is concluded that R. weyrichii extract could be potentially applicable as anti-oxidative and anti-bacterial ingredients in cosmetic formulations.

The effects of Tabebuia avellanedae (Taheebo) on exercise endurance capacity were investigated using mice in an adjustable-current water pool. Compared to the control group, a 1.8~2.0 fold increase in swimming time was observed in mice administered hot water extract (TAW) and 80% ethanol extract (TAE) of inner bark from T. avellanedae. Blood lactate level, an important fatigue relevance factor, was significantly lower in the TAW and TAE groups than in the control group. The total phenolic contents of TAW and TAE were $93.3{\pm}1.6$ and $115.7{\pm}1.5mgGAE/g$, respectively. The levels of flavonoids in the extracts were $77.3{\pm}1.3$ and $95.9{\pm}1.7mgCE/g$, respectively. Higher antioxidant activities of TAE were observed in each assay at the same concentration as compared to TAW. Correlation between antioxidant activities of TAE with total polyphenol contents was observed. These results suggest that extracts of Taheebo increase exercise endurance capacity by elevating antioxidative potentials.
In this study, an antioxidant was extracted from Lonicera japonica and Sophora japonica L, which was optimized by using the central composite design (CDD) model of response surface methodology (RSM). The response value of CDC model establishes the extraction yield and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. The extraction time, volume ratio of ethanol/ultrapure water, and extraction temperature were selected as quantitative factors. According to the result of CDC, optimal extraction conditions of Lonicera japonica were as follows; the extraction time of 2.08 h, volume ratio of ethanol/ultrapure water of 41.53 vol.%, and extraction temperature of $55.08^{\circ}C$. At these conditions the expected results indicated that the yield and DPPH radical scavenging activity were estimated as 37.88 wt% and 40.37%, respectively. On the other hand, optimal extraction conditions of Sophora japonica L. could be found as the extraction time of 2.13 h, volume ratio of ethanol/ultrapure water of 62.89 vol.%, and temperature of $50.42^{\circ}C$. Under the conditions, the (possible) maximum values of yield and DPPH radical scavenging activity were found as 35.43 wt% and 55.7%, respectively.

To confirm antioxidant activity of black garlic, methanol extract of black garlic was fractioned by hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, buthanol and water. Antioxidant activities of solvent fractions were assayed in 100, 250, 500 and $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$ concentrations. The contents of total phenol and flavonoids were significantly higher 5.5~11.6 times in chloroform, ethyl acetate and hexane fraction than other fractions. Antioxidant activities of solvent fractions were increased by higher sample concentrations and their activities were significantly higher in chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions than others. DPPH radical scavenging activity was over 50% in $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$ concentration, except butanol and water fraction. In the same concentration, reducing power was also significantly lower in butanol and water fraction. ABTS radical scavenging activity was higher in hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions and was over 70% at $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. In $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$ concentration, the range of hydroxy radical scavenging activity was 50.27~81.02% and SOD-like ability was 26.73~47.64%. Antioxidant activity in linoleic acid reaction system was significantly higher when storage time was longer and sample concentration was higher in non-polar solvent fractions. Nitrite scavenging activity was relatively higher than antioxidant activity and the activity in $100\;{\mu}g/mL$ concentration was over than 50%, except butanol fraction.
In this study, the antioxidant activities of hot water extracts of Rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa Thunb.) were evaluated. Total phenolic compounds (TPC) and total flavonoid compounds (TFC) were the highest in the leaf extracts at 107.29 mg/g and 24.28 mg/g, respectively. The DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt) radical scavenging activity was in the following order: flower extract > leaf extract > seed extract > fruit extract. The $IC_{50}$ values for DPPH and ABTS of the flower extract were $0.87mg/m{\ell}$ and $0.27mg/m{\ell}$, respectively. The amount of gallic acid was higher in the flower (4.51 mg/g) and leaf extracts (0.97 mg/g) than in the other extracts. Among the fraction (A-F) of each extract, antioxidant activity was the highest in the C fraction of flower extract. It is due to high TPC (3305.43 mg/g) and TFC (878.42 mg/g). Statistical analysis revealed a strong correlation between TFC (or TPC) and radical scavenging activity at p-value < 0.001. Collectively, these results suggest that the hot water extracts of rugosa rose have potential antioxidant effects, and can be used in food, cosmetics, and the pharmaceutical industries.
Antioxidant activities of ethanol and water extracts of flesh, leaves, and peels of green and purple Kohlrabi were measured by rancimat method, total phenolic compound (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging effect, chelating effect, and reducing power analysis. The highest TPC was observed in ethanol extract from green peel and water extract from purple leaf with 12.00 and 11.70 mg/g of dry sample, respectively. The ethanol extracts from purple Kohlrabi leaf and peel exhibited strong DPPH radical scavenging effects with reducing power while water extracts from purple Kohlrabi leaf and peel also showed strong DPPH radical scavenging with chelating effects. Antioxidant index of ethanol and water extracts from green and purple Kohlrabi measured by rancimat was lower than butylated hydroxytoluene. These results suggest that extracts from purple Kohlrabi leaf and peel exhibited higher antioxidant activities than those of green Kohlrabi, and can be potentially used as proper natural antioxidants.

In other to promote the utilization of native Gwangyang Rubus coreanus Miq. as an antioxidant material in functional food, its general composition, free sugars, vitamin C, vitamin E, and anthocyanin content were examined. Free sugars were mainly $2.83{\pm}0.01%$ glucose and $3.49{\pm}0.17%$ fructose. Native Gwangyang Rubus coreanus Miq. included higher vitamin C (0.04 g/100 g) and E (0.04 g/100 g) contents than other Rubus coreanus Miq. Anthocyanin was detected to be 2.41 g/100 g. Two extracts from native Gwangyang Rubus coreanus Miq., hot water extract (RCW) and 80% ethanol extract (RCE), were prepared by reflux, filter, and freeze-dry. The phenolic compound levels of RCW and RCE were 5.99% and 6.20%, respectively. In DPPH- and ABTS-radical scavenging activities, and lipid peroxidation formation inhibitory activity, RCE exhibited relatively high activities when compared to RCW (89.29% vs. 65.04%, 47.65% vs. 30.22%, 23.27% vs. 3.6%, respectively). Based upon these results, it is suggested that RCE from native Gwangyang Rubus coreanus Miq. possesses the antioxidant potentials for radical scavenging and anti-lipid peroxidation activities.
To evaluate the antioxidant activity of hexane, ethyl acetate, and butanol fractions obtained from Agastache rugosa extract, we measured the total polyphenol levels, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and reducing power. The ethyl acetate fraction of A. rugosa (AREA) displayed high phenolic levels, potent DPPH radical scavenging effect, and powerful reducing power. In addition, we examined the ability of AREA to inhibit nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated BV-2 microglia. AREA suppressed NO production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression and downregulated interleukin-6 (IL-6) mRNA level in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglia. Furthermore, we detected rosmarinic acid in AREA by HPLC, which suggested that rosmarinic acid could be one of the bioactive materials responsible for the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of AREA. These results suggested that AREA may be a good source of functional foods with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
This study investigated the functional study in anti-oxidant and anti-melanin activity by Desmarestia dudresnayi subsp. Tabacoides, Desmarestia viridis, Desmarestia ligulate leaf extracts. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of D. viridis extract showed a high antioxidant activity of 68.0 ± 1.9% at the concentration of 2.5 mg / mL, the ABTS and scavenging activity showed a high antioxidant activity of 84.6 ± 1.7% at the concentration of 2.5 mg / mL, and the NO radical scavenging activity was 2.5. It required a high antioxidant capacity of 91.6 ± 1.1% at mg/mL concentration. In addition, in B16F10 cells, at a concentration of 100 ㎍/mL, D. viridis extract is 35.0 ± 1.7% melanin among, which has the lowest amount of melanin among the three species. With these contents, it seems that there is a possibility that D. viridis could be developed as a cosmetic material. These results D. viridis considered that it can be used as a natural cosmetic material such as anti-oxidant and anti-melanin activity.

Thermal processing of (+)-catechin was carried out at $121^{\circ}C$ for different reaction times (1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 h). The reacted products, compounds (1) and (2), were isolated and quantified via HPLC analysis. The antioxidant properties of processed (+)-catechin and its isolated compounds for different reaction time was measured via radical scavenging assays using DPPH and $ABTS^+$ radicals. Additionally, the anti-obesity efficacy of the thermal treated (+)-catechin was evaluated via porcine pancreatic lipase assay. The reacted (+)-catechin for 3 h had a slightly higher antioxidant capacity than that the parent (+)-catechin. Products 1 and 2, which were isolated from the reacted mixture during 3 h, showed an antioxidant capacity, and these two compounds may be responsible for the antioxidant capacity of processed (+)-catechin. Simple thermal treatment of (+)-catechin can be used to produce (+)-epicatechin (1) and protocatechuic acid (2) with enhanced antioxidant and anti-adipogenic effects.
