  • Rhizina undulata is the fungus, which causes Rhizina root rot on coniferous trees. Nested-PCR using ITS-specific primer was applied to detect R. undulata from the soils of Japanese black pine (Pinus thunbergil) forests infested with the disease in Seocheon, Chungnam Province, South Korea. Soil samples were collected from four different sites, both dead trees and fruit bodies of R. undulata were present, dead trees only present, fruit bodies only present, and both were absent. Nested-PCR products specific to R. undulata ITS-region were amplified. Positive reactions were found in some samples from the sites, where dead trees and fruit bodies of R. undulata were absent as well as where both of those were present. R. undulata was mainly detected in the soil samples from the depth of 5~20 cm under the soil surface. These results show that the nested-PCR could be used to diagnose the presence or potential infestation of R. undulata in the soils of pine forests.

  • The primary objective of the current research was to detect genetic variations within the Indonesian isolates of Cochliobolus heterostrophus collected from ecologically different places of the country at molecular level using PCR-RFLP analyses. The primer pair of NS3 and NS6 produced amplification fragment in all of the isolates tested. A single fragment of estimated 907 bp was observed in the PCR product pattern. RFLP analysis of the PCR product employing three restriction enzymes, HaeIII, HhaI, and RsaI, respectively, did not reveal intraspecific variations within the fungus. Similarly, nucleotide sequences of portion of small subunit of the ribosomal DNA gene of two of the isolates collected showed no appreciable differences, indicating the absence of genetic diversities among the isolates tested. A phylogenetic tree was constructed and the Indonesian C. heterostrophus, represented by SM-1 isolate, was found to be phylogenetically located near C. sativus, a closely related species.

  • The exogenously added cadaverine is effective in protecting Vibrio vulnificus from methyl viologen (MV)-induced superoxide stress at pH 8.5. Such a protective effect by cadaverine was not observed at pH 7.5. Consistently, the accumulated level of intracellular cadaverine at pH 8.5 is approximately four times as much as that of the control cell at pH 7.5. Cadaverine accumulation is not affected by MV. The protection of V. vulnificus by cadaverine from superoxide stress was abolished when cadB coding for the lysine-cadaverine antiporter was interrupted. However, the cadaverine-mediated protection was complemented with cadB DNA. Therefore, CadB of V. vulnificus not only acts as a lysine-cadaverine antiporter at acid pH to neutralize the external medium, but also mediates cadaverine uptake at alkaline pH to result in cell protection from superoxide stress.

  • Hevea brasiliensis is a natural source of rubber and an important plantation tree species in Malaysia. Leaf blight disease caused by Fusicoccum substantially reduces the growth and performance of H. brasiliensis. The aim of this study was to use a combination of both morphological characteristics and molecular data to clarify the taxonomic position of the fungus associated with leaf blight disease. Fusicoccum species were isolated from infected leaves collected from plantations at 3 widely separated locations - Selangor, Perak, and Johor states - in Peninsular Malaysia in 2010. All the isolates were identified according to their conidial patterns and DNA sequences generated from internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2), the 5.8S rRNA, and an unknown locus (BotF15) containing microsatellite repeats. Based on taxonomic and sequence data, Neofusicoccum ribis was identified as the main cause of leaf blight disease in H. brasiliensis in commercial plantations in Malaysia. A pathogenicity trial on detached leaves further confirmed that N. ribis causes leaf blight disease. N. ribis is an important leaf pathogen, and its detection in Malaysia has important implications for future planting of H. brasiliensis.

  • The depletion of stratospheric ozone is regarded as a major environmental threat to plant growth and ecosystem. The ozone depletion has caused plants to be exposed to an increased penetration of solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation in the 280-320 nm wavelength range. Enhanced UV-B radiation may have influence on plants biological functions in many aspects including inhibition of photosynthesis, DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, changes in morphology, phenology, and biomass accumulation. To cope with the damage by UV radiation, plants have evolved to have protective mechanisms, such as photorepair, accumulation of UV-absorbing compounds, leaf thickening and activation of antioxidative enzymes. The objective of this review is to address the effects of enhanced UV-B on plant growth, UV-B action mechanisms and protection and protection mechanisms in plants.

  • Rice blast, caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most destructive rice diseases worldwide. The aim of this study was to screen bacterial isolates to efficiently prevent the occurrence of rice blast. A total of 232 bacterial isolates were extracted from nonrhizospheric rice soil and were screened for antifungal activity against M. oryzae using a leaf segment assay. Strains S170 and S9 showed significant antagonistic activity against M. oryzae in vitro and in leaf disk assays, and controlled M. oryzae infection under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that strains S170 and S9 could effectively control rice leaf blast and panicle neck blast after five spray treatments in field. This suggested that the bacterial strains S170 and S9 were valuable and promising for the biocontrol of rice disease caused by M. oryzae. Based on 16S rDNA, and gyrA and gyrB gene sequence analyses, S170 and S9 were identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus, respectively. The research also demonstrated that B. amyloliquefaciens S170 and B. pumilus S9 could colonize rice plants to prevent pathogenic infection and evidently suppressed plant disease caused by 11 other plant pathogenic fungi. This is the first study to demonstrate that B. amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus isolated from nonrhizospheric rice soil are capable of recolonizing internal rice stem tissues.

  • Polyamines, namely putrescine, spermidine, and spermine, are biogenic low-molecular-weight aliphatic amines. Polyamines play important roles in DNA stabilization, RNA and protein synthesis, membrane stabilization, modulation of ion channels, and protection against oxygen radicals and are essential for cell homeostasis, cell growth, and tumorigenesis. • Endonuclease inhibitor was isolated from the chloroplast of the leaves of tobacco, Burley 21 and NC 83, The inhibitory effect on the activities of endonucleases including BamH1 was lost by the addition of trypsin or heat treatment However, the treatment of $\alpha$-amylase was unconcerned in the inhibitory effect The endonuclease inhibitor was found to be a monomeric protein that plays a vital role for protection of tobacco chloroplast DNA from endonuclease action.

  • Lipid oxidation in foods produce the peroxidation products, toxic substance and rancidity odor. In vivo, lipid peroxidation by free radicals or molecular singlet oxygen cause such as a damage of DNA, cancer and aging. Accordingly, the development of new compound Inhibit lipid oxidation in foods and in vivo is very important. Antioxidants are generally used as a protection material of oxidation for a storage and preservation of foods. In terms of stability of foods and health for human, development of high effective antioxidants In a nature is required. In this point of view, this paper presents the research trends of a kind of natural antioxidative substances and its antioxidative activity.
