  • Inorganic/organic composite was synthesized by using sol-gel process, and the bonding characteristics of composite was investigated with glass transition temperature(Tg), measured by DMTA(Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyzer). It was found from shift of Tg to higher temperature that composite reaction was proceeded better with the amount of HCl and water. But Tg was not varied with reaction time.

  • Miscibility itnd thermal behavior of blends of synthetic biodegradable aliphatic polyester (Bionolle) with poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) were investigated by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) and a rotational rheometer. Observed both single glass transition temperatures from the DSC in agreement with the Fox equation and single T$_{g}$ changes as a function of composition from the DMTA indicate that these blend mixtures are miscible. In addition, the miscibility of this blend system was also observed from the single curve of the Cole-Cole Plot of log G′($\omega$) vs. log C"($\omega$) from the dynamic test using a rotational rheometer. This was further verified from the cryogenically fractured surface of BDP/PECH blends by scanning electron microscopy.

  • The material factors influencing the sound absorption of the polyurethane foam were investigated with FT-IR, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA). The measurements were performed using the samples which had a similar cell structure but different absorption coefficients. It was found that the ability of the sound absorption of the polyurethane foams was closely related to the damping behavior over the transition range. In order to confirm the use of the low monol polyol (LMP) in high-performance applications, the polyurethanes based on LMP and polypropylene oxide polyol (PPG) were prepared by the solution polymerization method. The microstructure and the physical properties of these polyurethanes were compared. The PPG-based polyurethane showed a higher level of the phase-separated structure because the considerable amount of monol presented in PPG made a contribution to the increased chain mobility. However the short chains formed due to the monol species deteriorated the damping property. As a result, the LMP-based polyurethane showed the superior damping behavior as compared with the PPG-based one.

  • The main goal of this study was to analyze the effect of process additives, i.e. maleated polypropylene (MAPP), and nucleating agent on the viscoelastic properties of different types of extruded polypropylene-wood plastic composites manufactured from either PP homopolymer, high crystallinity PP or PP impact copolymer using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. And also, the esterification reaction between wood flour and maleated polypropylene, and its role in determining the mechanical properties of wood flour-polypropylene composites was investigated. The wood plastic composites were manufactured using 60% pine wood flour and 40% polypropylene on a Davis-Standard $Woodtruder^{TM}$. Dynamic mechanical thermal properties, polymer damping peaks(than ${\delta}$), storage modulus (E') and loss modulus (E") were measured using a dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer. XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), also known as ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis) study of wood flour treated with MAPP was performed to obtain information on the chemical nature of wood fiber before and after treatment. To analyze the effect of frequency on the dynamic mechanical properties of the various composites, DMA tests were performed over a temperature range of -20 to $100^{\circ}C$, at four different frequencies (1, 5, 10 and 25 Hz), and at a heating rate of $5^{\circ}C/min$. From these results, the activation energy of the various composite was measured using an Arrhenius relationship to investigate the effect of maleated PP and nucleating agent on the measurement of the interphase between the wood and plastic of the extruded polypropylene wood plastic composites.

  • Polyurethane (PU) synthesized from 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate having high functionality (f=2.9) and polyester polyol have been investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR). From the DSC measurement of polyurethane, a single transition temperature ($T_g$) was observed. This result indicates that polyurethanes synthesized in this work have homogeneous network structure due to high functionality of diisocyanate. It was also found that the $T_g$ of polyurethane was increased as hard segment content was increased. The results from DMTA measurement are consistent with DSC results. In order to investigate the effect of thermal annealing on the $T_g$ of polyurethane, the samples were annealed at various annealing conditions. $T_gs$ of polyurethanes were found to increased with annealing temperature. From swelling experiment and FT-IR studies, it was found that the $T_g$ was increased as crosslinking density of polyurethane was increased.

  • In a recent study by the same authors using a DMTA (Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyzer), it was found that the 4-aminobenzoic arid (ABA) molecules acted as either a neutralizing agent, or a plasticizer, or a filler, depending on the order of mixing of poly(styrene-co-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA), ABA, and NaOH. Subsequent to that study, we here pursued the same topic, i.e., the effect of the addition of CsOH (instead of NaOH) and ABA on the morphology of PSSA, but this time, by using a small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. In line with the previous results, the present study with the SAXS technique verified that the order of mixing has a significant effect on the morphology of ionomers. In addition, with the SAXS data and the density values of the ionomers, we attempted to calculate both the number of sulfonate ionic groups per multiplet and the size of the multiplet of the ionomer.

  • Melt blend of PA6/PP-g-MA system containing SEBS-g-MA as a compatible impact modifier was prepared to investigate the change of mechanical properties and morphologies. The tensile strength slightly decreased, but the elongation at break increased with increasing content of SEBS-g-MA in the blend. Also the notched izod impact strength increased with increasing the content of PP-g-MA and SEBS-g-MA. It is attributed to improved compatibilization and interfacial adhesion by reaction of the amide of PA6 with maleic anhydride of SEBS-g-MA and PP-g-MA. The result of dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) showed a typical behavior of the compatibilization in the polymer blends. Finally, in the phase structure observed by the use of SEM, we confirmed improvement of the compatibilization and interfacial adhesion with increasing the content of SEBS-g-MA and PP-g-MA.

  • A new thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(TLCP) containing a triad aromatic ester type mesogenic unit and butylene terephthalate unit(BT) in the main chain was synthesized by polycondensation reaction. The TLCP synthesized showed nematic mesophasic behavior and its transition temperature from solid to mesophase was $260^{\circ}C$. The TLCP/PBT blends were prepared by in-situ polymerization in PBT solution and characterized by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC), thermogavimetric analyzer(TGA), scanning electron microscope(SEM), x-ray diffractometer(XRD), and dynamic mechanical thermal analyze, (DMTA). The blends showed well dispersed TLCP phases with domain sizes $0.05{\sim}0.2{\mu}m$ in the PBT matrix. As the increasing TLCP content from 5 to 20 wt%, ${\Delta}Hm$ values of pure PBT in the blend were increased because TLCP acts as a nucleating agent in the PBT matrix. The mechanical properties of the blends depended on the TLCP contents because the TLCP acted effectively as a reinforcing material in the PBT matrix. The blends showed good interfacial adhesion between the TLCP phase and PBT matrix. The blends prepared by in-situ polymerization showed higher mechanical properties and well dispersed TLCP domains than those of the blends prepared by melt blending.
