  • Total Transfer Capability (TTC) should be pre-determined in order to estimate Available Transfer Capability (ATC). Typically, TTC is determined by considering three categories; voltage, stability and thermal limits. Among these, thermal limits are treated mainly in this paper on the evaluation of TTC due to the relatively short transmission line length of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) system. This paper presents a new approach to evaluate the TTC using the Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) for the thermal limit. Since the approach includes not only traditional electrical constraints but also real-time environmental constraints, this paper obtains more cost-effective and exact results. A case study using KEPCO system confirms that the proposed method is useful for real-time operation and the planning of the electricity market.

  • The KOMPSAT European Cooperation aims at enhancing existing and establishing new collaborations between KARI and various European institutions. The objective is to create mutual data and information exchange possibilities and to develop new data applications of available and future space based Earth Observation sensors. In this paper, the concept of a KOMPSAT regional application center, a joint development between KARI, ARCS and other European partners is presented. This includes the establishment of an additional KOMPSAT-2 downlink in Europe, and the developments of a state-of-the-art user service system for urban and environmental security monitoring.

  • We introduce a novel packet retransmission technique which improves the efficiency of automatic retransmission query (ARQ) protocols in the context of satellite broadcast/multicast systems. The proposed coded ARQ technique, similarly to fountain coding, performs transmission of redundant packets, which are made by linear combinations of the packets composing the source block. Differently from fountain codes, the packets for the linear combinations are selected on the basis of the retransmission requests coming from the user terminals. The selection is performed in a way that, at the terminals, the source packets can be recovered iteratively by means of simple back-substitutions. This work aims at providing a simple and efficient alternative to reliable multicast protocols based on erasure correction coding techniques.

  • In Webspace, mining traversal patterns is to understand user's path traversal patterns. On this mining, it has a unique characteristic which objects (for example, URLs) may be visited due to their positions rather than contents, because users move to other objects according to providing information services. As a consequence, it becomes very complex to extract meaningful information from these data. Recently discovering traversal patterns has been an important problem in data mining because there has been an increasing amount of research activity on various aspects of improving the quality of information services. This paper presents a Dynamic Link Recommendation (DLR) algorithm that recommends link sets on a Web site through mining frequent traversal patterns. It can be employed to any Web site with massive amounts of data. Our experimentation with two real Weblog data clearly validate that our method outperforms traditional method.

  • Background: Solar furnaces are used worldwide to conduct experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of solar-chemical processes with the aid of concentrated sunlight, or to qualify high temperature-resistant components. In recent years, high-flux solar simulators (HFSSs) based on short-arc xenon lamps are more frequently used. The emitted spectrum is very similar to natural sunlight but with dangerous portions of ultraviolet light as well. Due to special benefits of solar simulators the increase of construction activity for HFSS can be observed worldwide. Hence, it is quite important to protect employees against serious injuries caused by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in a range of 100 nm to 400 nm. Methods: The UV measurements were made at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Cologne and Paul-Scherrer-Institute (PSI), Switzerland, during normal operations of the HFSS, with a high-precision UV-A/B radiometer using different experiment setups at different power levels. Thus, the measurement results represent UV emissions which are typical when operating a HFSS. Therefore, the biological effects on people exposed to UVR was investigated systematically to identify the existing hazard potential. Results: It should be noted that the permissible workplace exposure limits for UV emissions significantly exceeded after a few seconds. One critical value was strongly exceeded by a factor of 770. Conclusion: The prevention of emissions must first and foremost be carried out by structural measures. Furthermore, unambiguous protocols have to be defined and compliance must be monitored. For short-term activities in the hazard area, measures for the protection of eyes and skin must be taken.

  • Accurate estimation of the Earth gravity field plays an important role in understanding the Earth geodynamic activities. After brief discussion on the objective of the gravity estimation, dedicated satellite missions for this purpose are described. Recently launched NASA/DLR Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission, which consists of two co-orbiting low altitude satellites, is described. For the performance analysis, full numerical simulation was performed. The simulation procedure and its key instrument modelings are described. From the simulation results, a significant improvement on the Earth gravity field accuracy is expected.

  • Dual-point aerodynamic design optimization is conducted for DLR-F6 wing-body-nacelle-pylon configuration adopting an efficient surface mesh movement method for complex junction geometries. A three-dimensional unstructured Euler solver and its discrete adjoint code are utilized for flow and sensitivity analysis, respectively. Considered design conditions are a low-lift condition and a cruise condition in a transonic regime. Design objective is to minimize drag and reduce shock strength at both flow conditions. Shape deformation is made by variation of the section shapes of inboard wing and pylon, nacelle vertical location and nacelle pitch angle. Hicks-Henne shape functions are employed for deformation of the section shapes of wing and pylon. By the design optimization, drag coefficients were remarkably reduced at both design conditions retaining specified lift coefficient and satisfying other constraints. Two-point design results show mixed features of the one-point design results at low-lift condition and cruise conditions.
