  • This paper presents a near-optimum blind decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for the receivers of Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television. By adopting a modified trellis decoder (MTD) with a trace- back depth of 1 for the decision device in the DFE, we obtain a hardware-efficient, blind DFE approaching the performance of an optimum DFE which has no error propagation. In the MTD, the absolute distance is used rather than the squared Euclidean distance for the computation of the branch metrics. This results in a reduction of the computational complexity over the original trellis decoding scheme. Compared to the conventional slicer, the MTD shows an outstanding performance improvement in decision error probability and is comparable to the original trellis decoder using the Euclidean distance. Reducing error propagation by use of the MTD in the DFE leads to the improvement of convergence performance in terms of convergence speed and residual error. Simulation results show that the proposed blind DFE performs much better than the blind DFE with the slicer, and the difference is prominent at the trellis decoder following the blind DFE.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer) based on LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) code for phase noise suppression and performance improvement. The proposed equalizer in this paper is applied for wireless repeater system. So as to meet ever increasing requirements on higher wireless access data rate and better quality of service (QoS), the wireless repeater system has been studied. The echo channel and RF impairments such as phase noise produce performance degradation. In order to remove echo channel and phase noise, we suggest a novel adaptive DFE equalizer based on LDPC code. The proposed equalizer helps to compensate RF impairments and improve the performance significantly better than used independently. In addition, proposed equalizer has less iteration number of LDPC code. So, the proposed equalizer system has low complexity.

  • The increase in the capacity of the digital magnetic recording systems inevitably causes severe intersymbol interference (ISI) and nonlinear distortions in the digital magnetic recording channel. In this paper, to cope with severe ISI and nonlinear distortions a neural decision feedback equalizer (NDFE) is applied to the digital magnetic recording channel - partial erasure channel model. In the performance comparison of bit error probability (or bit error ratio : BER) between the NDFE and the conventional decision feedback equalizer (DFE) via computer simulations. It has been found that as nonlinear distortions increase the NDFE has more SNR (SIgnal-to-Noise Ratio) advantage over the conventional DFE. In addition, in spite of the same recording density, as nonlinear distortions are increased, NDFE has the better performance of BER and the greater stability over conventional DFE.

  • In many current wireless packet data system, the short-burst transmissions are used, and training overhead is very significant for such short burst formats. So, the availability of the short training sequence and the fast converging algorithm is essential in the adaptive equalizer. In this paper, the new equalizer algorithm is proposed to improve the performance of a MTLMS (multiple-training least mean square) based DFE (decision feedback equalizer)using the short training sequence. In the proposed method, the output of the DFE is fed back to the LMS (least mean square) based adaptive DEF loop iteratively and used as an extended training sequence. Instead of the block operation using ML (maximum likelihood) estimator, the low-complexity adaptive LMS operation is used for overall processing. Simulation results show that the perfonnance of the proposed equalizer is improved with a linear computational increase as the iterations parameter in creases and can give the more robustness to the time-varying fading.

  • In this paper, we present an equalization scheme for 8-VSB signals for the ATSC DTV system. We propose a complex feedback filter and complex feedback sample generator for DFE to equalize 8-VSB signals in order to efficiently remove multipath distortions causing leakages from the qudrature component. We show that the proposed structure outperforms the conventional DFE used for the digital VSB which uses a real-valued feedback filter with real-valued decisions.

  • A differencing multiuser detection (MUD) method is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) direct sequence (DS) ultra-wideband (UWB) system to cope with the multiple access interference (MAI) and the computational efficiency in Nakagami fading channel. The method, which combines a multiuser-interference-cancellation-based decision feedback equalizer using error feedback filter (MIC DFE-EFF), a coefficient optimization algorithm (COA) and a differencing algorithm (DA), is termed as MIC DFE-EFF (COA) with DA for short. In the paper, the proposed MUD method is illuminated from the rudimental MIC DFE-EFF to the advanced MIC DFE-EFF (COA) with DA step by step. Firstly, the MIC DFE-EFF system performance is analyzed by minimum mean square error criterion. Secondly, the COA is investigated for optimization of each filter coefficient. Finally, the DA is introduced to reduce the computational complexity while sacrificing little performance. Simulations show a significant performance gain can be achieved by using the MIC DFE-EFF (COA) with DA detector. The proposed MIC DFE-EFF (COA) with DA improves both bit error rate performance and computational efficiency relative to DFE, DFE-EFF, parallel interference cancellation (PIC), MIC DFE-EFF and MIC DFE-EFF with DA, though it sacrifices little system performance, compared with MIC DFE-EFF (COA) without DA.

  • Adaptive equalizers are inevitable schemes in digital communication systems for compensating the transmission channel distortion. Additionally, to obtain the required BER(Bit Error Rate), the adaptive algorithms appropriate to the mobile communication channels are required. In this paper, we propose the NPDFE (Noise-Predictive Decision Feedback Equalizer) for communication systems performance improvement in mobile communication channels. The performance of the proposed NPDFE with QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) is simulated under AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise), Ricean fading, ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) fading, and Rayleigh fading channels. The equalizers used in simulations are a LE (Linear Equalizer), a DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer), and a NPDFE. Moreover, the equalizer performance criterion of the QPSK is the BER.

  • In this paper, a blind adaptation method for a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is proposed to deal with nominimum phase channels. This equalizer is composed of a linear transversal filter and a prediction error filter which are trained separately using constant modulus and decision feedback prediction algorithms, respectively, during the learnign time. The proposed algorithm guaranetees the DFE to converge to a suboptimal point on the condition that a linear transversal of the proposed scheme is illustrated and the performance is compared with conventional blind equlization algorithms.

  • Wireless transmission system using the multipath channel is affected ISI due to the delay spread. So we use a decision feedback equalizer which consist of decision part and feedback filter for remove the ISI effectively. In this paper, we propose a improved adaptive decision feedback equalizer to mitigate ISI effectively. The proposed adaptive decision feedback equalizer is construct by using soft decision device and hierarchical feedback filter based on MMSE sub-optimal equalizer using the LMS algorithm. Soft decision device mitigate the error propagation in feedback filter by incorrectly detected decision symbol and feedback filter which is divided two step independently mitigate the ISI by using a adaptive algorithm. As a result this structure shows better performance than conventional decision feedback equalizer by mitigating the error propagation in filter cause incorrectly detecting symbol. and we get the MSE more rapidly by using larger step-size due to reduce the number of feedback filter tap. In computer simulation, we compare the bit error rate performance of proposed decision feedback equalizer with conventional one on the S-V channel model for UWB system.

  • In this paper, we propose a noise whitening decision feedback equalizer for single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) receivers. SC-FDMA has the same advantage as that of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in which the multipath effect can be removed easily, and also solves the problem of high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) which is the main drawback of OFDMA. Although SC-FDMA is a single carrier transmission scheme, a simple frequency domain linear equalizer (FD-LE) can be implemented as in OFDMA, which can dramatically reduce the equalizer complexity. Moreover, some residual intersymbol interference in the output of the FD-LE can be further removed by an additional nonlinear decision feedback equalizer (DFE) in time domain, because the time domain signal is a digitally modulated symbol. In the conventional DFE, however, the noise is not white at the input of the decision device and correspondingly the decision is not optimum. In this paper, we propose an improved DFE scheme for SC-FDMA systems where a linear noise whitening filter is inserted before the decision device of the conventional DFE scheme. Through computer simulations, we compare the bit error rate performance of the proposed DFE scheme with the conventional equalizers.
