Due to the rapid growth and expansion of the Internet, the digital multimedia such as image, audio and video are available for everyone. Anyone can make unauthorized copying for any digital product. Accordingly, the owner of these products cannot protect his ownership. Unfortunately, this situation will restrict any improvement which can be done on the digital media production in the future. Some procedures have been proposed to protect these products such as cryptography and watermarking techniques. Watermarking means embedding a message such as text, the image is called watermark, yet, in a host such as a text, an image, an audio, or a video, it is called a cover. Watermarking can provide and ensure security, data authentication and copyright protection for the digital media. In this paper, a new watermarking method of still image is proposed for the purpose of copyright protection. The procedure of embedding watermark is done in a transform domain. The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is exploited in the proposed method, where the watermark is embedded in the selected coefficients according to several criteria. With this procedure, the deterioration on the image is minimized to achieve high invisibility. Unlike the traditional techniques, in this paper, a new method is suggested for selecting the best blocks of DCT coefficients. After selecting the best DCT coefficients blocks, the best coefficients in the selected blocks are selected as a host in which the watermark bit is embedded. The coefficients selection is done depending on a weighting function method, where this function exploits the values and locations of the selected coefficients for choosing them. The experimental results proved that the proposed method has produced good imperceptibility and robustness for different types of attacks.
A novel steganography based on ternary BCH code with t = 2 is presented in this paper. Proposed method utilizes powerful BCH code with t = 2 for data hiding to the DCT coefficients from JPEG images. The presented data hiding technique uses a proposed look up table approach for searching multiple solutions for ternary BCH code with t = 2. The proposed look up table approach enables fast and efficient search for locations of DCT coefficients, which are necessary to modify for hiding data. Presented data hiding technique is the first steganography technique based on ternary BCH code. Experimental results clearly indicate advantages of using ternary BCH compared to binary BCH.

We propose a new image coding method which takes into account both statistical redundancy and perceptual irrelevancy of the DCT coefficients so as to provide a high quality of the reconstructed images with a reduced transmission bit rate First, a block of DCT coefficients are decomposed into 16 subvectors so as for a subvector to convey key information about one of the low-pass or the dirctional filtered images. Then, the most significant subvector is selected as the principal edge of the block and then vector quantized. After that, the residuals of the block are computed and then sequentially quantized through aforementioned procedure until the quantization distortion is smaller than the target distortion. The proposed scheme is good at encoding images with a variety of transmission bit rates, especially at very low bit rate coding. In addition, it is another benifit of the proposed scheme that an image can be quantized with a wide range of the transmission bit rates by simply adapting the stopping criterion of the sequential vector quantizer according to the target distortion of the reconstructed image.
In this paper, we proposed DC term embedding digital watermarking in the DCT domain. We computed a 8${\times}$8 block DCT The watermark signal is composed of a random number sequence of length 1000, which obeys normal distribution with zero mean and unit variance N(0,1). We embedded watermark signal in DC term for small watermark signal, the other watermark signal embedded in the largest AC coefficients. Experiment show that the invisibility and robust of the proposed method better than those of the conventional methods.

The H.264/AVC video coding standard provides higher coding efnciency compared to the conventional MPEG-2 standard. Since a lot of videos have been encoded using MPEG-2, the format conversion from MPEG-2 to H.264 is essential. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for the conversion of DCT coefficients to H.264/AVC transform coefficients. This conversion is essential, since $8{\times}8$ DCT and $4{\times}4$ integer transform are used in MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC, respectively. The mathematical analysis and computer simulation show that the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced compared to the conventional algorithm, while the loss caused by the conversion is negligible.

This paper presents a novel DCT-based embedded zero-tree coding and optimal bit allocation algorithm for image sequence coding. In order to fully utilize the structure of the conventional standard coding algorithm and improve the coding efficiency, motion estimation and compensation(ME/MC)-DCT hybrid coding structure and a modified zero-tree coding algorithm are applied. After the rearrangement DCT coefficients into pyramidal structure according to their significance on the decoded image quality, the modified embedded zero-tree coding is performed on layered coefficients. Moreover, for a given overall bit rates, a new optimal bit control scheme is proposed to achieve the best decoded image quality in the consecutive frames. The rate control scheme can also provide the equal quality of decoded image with the control of bit rate and distortion for each frame. The various simulation results are provided to evaluate the coding performance of the proposed scheme.

Based on regularization principles, we propose a new dequantization scheme on DCT-based transform coding for reducing of blocking artifacts and minimizing the quantization error. The conventional image dequantization is simply to multiply the received quantized DCT coefficients by the quantization matrix. Therefore, for each DCT coefficients, we premise that the quantization noise is as large as half quantizer step size (in DCT domain). Our approach is based on basic constraint that quantization error is bounded to ${\pm}$(quantizer spacing/2) and at least there are not high frequency components corresponding to discontinuities across block boundaries of the images. Through regularization, our proposed dequantization scheme, sharply reduces blocking artifacts in decoded images. Our proposed algorithm guarantees that the dequantization process will map the quantized DCT coefficients will be evaluated against the standard JPEG, MPEG-1 and H.263 (with Annex J deblocking filter) decoding process. The experimental results will show visual improvements as well as numerical improvements in terms of the peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the blockiness measure (BM) to be defined.

In the MPEG-4 standardization phase, many methods for coding the irregular shaped VOP (video object Plane) have been researched. Texture coding is one of interesting research items in the MPEG-4. There are the Low pass extrapolation (LPE) padding, the shape adaptive DCT (SA-DCT), and the Extension-Interpolation (EI)/2D-DCT proposed in [1] as texture coding methods. the EI/2D-DCT is the method extending and interpolating luminance values from and Arbitrarily Shaped (AS) image segment into an 8 x 8 block and transforming the extended and interpolated luminance values by the 8x8 DCT. although the EI/2D-DCT and the SA-DCT work well in coding the As image segments. they are degraded since they use one-dimensional (1-D) methods such as the 1D-EI and the 1D-DCT in the two-dimensional (2-D) space. in this paper, we analyze the performance of the EI/2D-DCTand propose a new non-symmetric sig-sag scanning method, which non-symmetrically scans the quantized coefficients in the DCT domain to improve the EI/2D-DCT.

MPEG-4 FGS is one of scalable video coding schemes specified In ISO/IEC 14496-2 Amendment 2, and particularly standardized as a scheme for providing fine granular quality and temporal scalabilities. In this paper, we propose a sign-bit reduction technique in embedded bit-plane coding to enhance the coding efficiency of MPEG-4 FGS system. The general structure of the FGS system for the proposed scheme is based on the standard MPEG-4 FGS system. The proposed FGS enhancement-layer encoder takes as input the difference between the original DCT coefficient and the decision level of the quantizer instead of the difference between the original DCT coefficient and its reconstruction level. By this approach, the sign information of the enhancement-layer DCT coefficients can be the same as that of the base-layer ones at the same frequency index in DCT domain. Thus, overhead bits required for coding a lot of sign information of the enhancement-layer DCT coefficients in embedded bit-plane coding can be removed from the generated bitstream. It is shown by simulations that the proposed FGS coding system provides better coding performance, compared to the MPEG-4 FGS system in terms of compression efficiency.

In this paper we propose an architecture for VLC(Variable Length Coder) and VLD(Variable Length Decoder) which is simple with respect to implementation point and efficient in memory. We implemented encoding and decoding circuit where we need only 7-bit address memory space for 114 MPEG1 DCT coefficients and employed minimal number of flip-flops and logics for an architecture to integrate a shift register for serial-to-parallel or parallel-to-serial conversion of the data in code mapping ROM. We obtained 50Mbps operating speed in both encoding and decoding process as the result of simulation using 0.80.8${\mu}m$ CMOS standard cells.
