접착부재의 초음파 감쇠계수에 의한 계면균열 길이의 측정 (Measurement of Interfacial Crack Length by Ultrasonic Attenuation Coefficients on Adhesively Bonded Components)

  • The ultrasonic attenuation coefficients were measured by interfacial crack length in the adhesive components of double-cantilever beam(DCB). The energy release rate, G, was obtained by the experimental measurement of compliance. The numerical analysis by the boundary element method(BEM) and Ripling's equation was investigated. The experimental results represent that the relation between interfacial crack length for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and energy release rate is increased proportionally. A measurement method of the interfacial crack length by the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was proposed and discussed.

  • In this paper, the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was measured by variation of crack length for double-cantilever beam(DCB) specimen. The energy release rate, G, was obtained by the experimental measurement of compliance. The experimental results represents that the crack length for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and energy release rate is increases proportionally From the experimental results, we proposed a detecting method of the crack length by the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and discussed it.

  • In this work, the effect of surface treatment of prepreg on the mode I fracture behavior was studied. Unidirectional (0-deg) double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used for fracture tests. Two groups of DCB specimens were made: the first group was made of prepregs surface-treated by Ar(sup)+ ion beam under oxygen environment and the second group was made of regular prepregs. For both groups, fracture resistance curve (R-curve) was determined and compared to each other, Results showed that resistance behavior of the first group is better than that of the second group. That is, mode I fracture toughness, G(sub)Ic of the first group is 24% larger than that of the second group. SEM examination shows that the improvement of G(sub)Ic is due to the increase of interfacial strength between plies.

  • Recently, many kinds of advanced composite materials have been used in various industry fields. Among them, fabric CFRP composites are being used as primary structural components in many applications because of their superior properties. However, the complexity of the fabric structure makes understanding of their failure behavior very difficult. The mechanical strength and crack propagation of plain woven carbon fiber fabric laminate composites are examined by acoustic emission(AE) method. AE signals are acquired during the tensile test and fracture tests. Thus, the relationship between AE signal and mechanical behavior curves and crack extension length are shown. Also the interlaminar fracture toughness in terms of AE characteristics are discussed in viewpoint of crack propagation behavior.

A Study on Mode I Interlaminar Fracture Toughness of Foam Core Sandwich Structures

  • This paper investigates the characteristics of interlaminar fracture toughness of foam core sandwich structures under opening mode by using the double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens which are Carbon/Epoxy and foam core composites. Instead of using a DCB specimen of symmetric geometry, a non-symmetric DCB specimen was used to calculate the interlaminar fracture toughness. Three approaches for calculating the energy release rate(G$\sub$IC/) were used and fracture toughness of foam core sandwich structures made by autoclave, vacuum bagging and hotpress were compared. Experiment, analysis using nonlinear beam bending theory, and numerical work by FEM methods were performed. Bonding surface compensation and equivalent moment of inertia were used to calculate the energy release rate in nonlinear analytical work. Conclusions of experimental, nonlinear analytical and FEM methods were compared. It is, also, shown that the vacuum bagging forming can substitute the method of autoclave without serious loss of Mode I energy release rate(G$\sub$I/).

  • This paper was carried out to investigate the characteristics of interlaminar fracture toughness of foam core sandwich structures under opening loading mode by using the double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens in Carbon/Epoxy and foam core composites. instead of using symmetric geometry of DCB specimen non-symmetric DCB specimen was used to calculate the interlaminar fracture toughness. Three approaches for calculating the energy release rate({{{{ {G }_{IC } }}}}) were compared. Fracture toughness of foam core sandwich structures by autoclave vacuum bagging and hotpress were compared and analyzed. Experiment nonlinear beam bending FEM method were performed. Suggested bonding surface compensation and equivalent area inertia moment was used to calculate the energy release rate in nonlinear analytical results. The conclusions among experimental nonlinear analytical and FEM results was observed. 미세 배선 적용을 위한 Ta/Cu 적층 구조에 따른 계면접착에너지 평가 및 분석 (Effect of Ta/Cu Film Stack Structures on the Interfacial Adhesion Energy for Advanced Interconnects)

  • Cu 배선(interconnect) 적용을 위한 다층박막의 적층 구조에 따른 최적 계면접착에너지(interfacial adhesion energy, Gc) 평가방법을 도출하기 위해, Ta, Cu 및 tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS-SiO2) 박막 계면의 정량적 계면접착에너지를 double cantilever beam(DCB) 및 4-점 굽힘(4-point bending, 4-PB) 시험법을 통해 비교 평가하였다. 평가결과, Ta확산방지층이 적용된 시편(Cu/Ta, Cu/Ta/TEOS-SiO2)에서는 두 가지 평가방법 모두 반도체 전/후 공정에서 박리가 발생하지 않는 산업체 통용 기준인 5 J/㎡ 보다 높게 측정되었다. Ta/Cu 시편의 경우 DCB 시험에서만 5 J/㎡ 보다 낮게 측정되었다. 또한, DCB시험 보다 4-PB시험으로 측정된 Gc가 더 높았다. 이는 계면파괴역학 이론에 따라 이종재료의 계면균열 선단에서 위상각의 증가로 인한 계면 거칠기 및 소성변형에 의한 에너지 손실이 증가 하는것에 기인한다. 4-PB시험결과, Ta/Cu 및 Cu/Ta계면은 5 J/㎡ 이상의 높은 계면접착에너지를 보이므로, 계면접착에너지 관점에서는 Ta는 Cu배선의 확산방지층(diffusion barrier layer) 및 피복층(capping layer)으로 적용 가능할 것으로 생각된다. 또한, 배선 집적공정 및 소자의 사용환경에서 열팽창 계수 차이에 의한 열응력 및 화학적-기계적 연마 (chemical mechanical polishing)에 의한 박리는 전단응력이 포함된 혼합모드의 영향이 크므로 4-PB 시험으로 측정된 Gc와 연관성이 더 클 것으로 판단된다.

Experimental investigation of interlaminar mechanical properties on carbon fiber stitched CFRP laminates

  • Experimental investigations of interlaminar mechanical properties for carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates were carried out using aramid fiber ($Kevlar^{(R)}$-29 1000d) and carbon fiber (TR40-1K 612d, Mitsubishi Rayon) stitching. Various carbon fiber (CF) stitch densities were used to prepare a number of CF stitched CFRP laminates for double cantilever beam (DCB) tests. An insert tongue-type loading fixture, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (formerly the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan), was also employed in the DCB test. Interlaminar tension tests were carried out under an out-of-plane directional loading using a single CF stitch thread in the CFRP laminates. The DCB test results clarified that the relationship between the volume fractions of the CF stitch thread ($V_{ft}$) and mode I critical energy release rate ($G_{Ic}$) showed a mostly linear function with a higher gradient than that of the $Kevlar^{(R)}$ stitched CFRP laminates. The CF stitched CFRP tension test results indicated that the consumption energy per unit area ($E_i$) was larger than that of $Kevlar^{(R)}$ stitched CFRP laminates.

휨을 고려한 칩 패키지의 EMC/PCB 계면 접합 에너지 측정 (Measurement of EMC/PCB Interfacial Adhesion Energy of Chip Package Considering Warpage)

  • 칩 패키지에는 생산 공정 및 운송, 보관 과정에서 발생하는 외부 환경 변화로부터 인쇄 회로 기판(printed circuit board, PCB)을 보호하기 위해 에폭시 몰딩(epoxy molding compound, EMC)이 사용된다. PCB와 EMC의 접합 신뢰성은 제품의 품질 및 수명에 중요한 요소이며 이를 보증하기 위해 제품 설계 및 생산 단계에서 그 접합 에너지를 정밀하게 측정하고, 이에 영향을 끼치는 요소를 통제하여 공정을 최적화 시켜야 한다. 본 논문은 이중 외팔보(double cantilever beam, DCB) 시험을 이용하여 휨(warpage)이 있는 칩 패키지의 EMC와 PCB의 계면 접합 에너지를 측정하고 보정하는 방법에 대해 소개한다. DCB 시험법은 이종 재료의 계면 접합 에너지를 측정하는 전통적인 방법이며 정밀한 접합 에너지 측정을 위해 평평한 기판이 필수적이다. 그러나 칩 패키지는 내부 구성 요소들의 열팽창 계수 차이로 인해 휨이 발생하기 때문에 평평한 기판을 제작하여 정밀한 접합 에너지를 측정하는데 어려움이 있다. 이를 극복하고자 본 연구에서는 휨이 있는 칩 패키지로 DCB 시험법을 위한 시편을 제작하고, 기판의 복원력을 보정하여 접합 에너지를 계산하였다. 보정된 접합에너지는 동일 조건에서 제작된 칩 패키지 중 휨이 없는 시편을 선별하여 측정한 접합 에너지와 비교, 검증하였다.

  • The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of woven fabric carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites for a train carbody was measured and FEM analysis was conducted. The woven fabric epoxy composite manufactured by hand lay-up, has high stiffness and strength, good resistance for impact, fatigue, corrosion and in-plane failure. The DCB(Double Cantilever Beam) specimen made of woven fabric epoxy composite had the size of 180mm $\times$ 25mm $\times$ 5mm and the insert of 65mm. The Mode I interlaminar toughness of specimen was measured according to ASTM 5528-01. The crack propagation behavior of the DCB specimen was simulated using FEA with cohesive elements that model the adhesive layer between woven fabric plies.
