Effect of Casting Temperature and Speed on Formation of Surface Defect in Al-8Zn-2Mg-2Cu Billets Fabricated by Direct-Chill Casting Process (수직 연속주조 공정으로 제조된 Al-8Zn-2Mg-2Cu 빌렛의 표면 결함 형성에 미치는 주조 온도와 주조 속도의 영향)

  • 7000-series aluminum alloys are noted for their superior strength compared with other Al alloys, and their billets are generally fabricated by direct-chill (DC) casting. Surface defects in a DC-cast aluminum billet are mainly related to exudation and the meniscus freezing phenomenon, which are influenced by alloy compositions, casting speed, and casting temperature. 7000-series aluminum alloys have a wide freezing range during solidification, which makes it easy for casting defects to occur. In this study, we investigated surface defect evolution in casting billets of Al-8Zn-2Mg-2Cu alloy fabricated by a DC casting process. The billets showed "wavy" or "dotted" surfaces. The wavy surface was formed by meniscus freezing at a lower casting speed (200 mm/min) and temperature (655 ℃). In the wavy surface, refined dendritic cells were observed in a concave region due to the constitutional supercooling caused by meniscus freezing. Meanwhile, at a higher casting temperature (675 ℃), the dotted surface was formed by pore formation. In the dotted surfaces in the billet formed at a high casting speed (230 mm/min), an exudation layer was formed by the high metallostatic head pressure. The dotted region and the smooth region had a refined dendritic morphology and a columnar morphology at the exudation layer, respectively. This is attributed to the formation of gas pores in the dotted region.

쌍롤 박판주조법으로 제조된 고합금계 알루미늄 합금의 미세조직 및 기계적 특성

  • 최근 환경과 에너지에 대한 관심이 증대됨에 따라 차체의 경량화를 위한 고합금계 알루미늄 합금의 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 특히 5000계 알루미늄 합금은 비중이 낮을 뿐만 아니라 Mg의 첨가에 의해 높은 강도 및 성형성을 얻을 수 있기 때문에 자동차용 판재로 많은 주목을 받고 있다. 현재 사용되는 대부분의 알루미늄 합금판재는 DC주조법과 추가적인 압연공정으로 제조되기 때문에 경제성 문제와 낮은 냉각속도로 인한 금속학적인 문제를 갖는다. 그러나 DC주조법과는 달리 쌍롤 박판주조법은 용탕으로부터 직접 판재를 제조하기 때문에 경제적이며 효율적인 주조공정이다. 또한 냉각속도가 빠르기 때문에 비교적 주조편석이 적고 전반적인 미세조직이 균일하여 고합금계 알루미늄 합금 판재제조에 매우 유용하게 응용될 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 쌍롤 박판주조법으로 고합금계 알루미늄 합금 판재를제조하고, 제조된 합금의 열간압연 및 열처리 조건에 따른 기계적 특성을 비교 및 평가하였다. 또한 미세조직 및 집합조직을 분석함으로써 고합금계 알루미늄 합금 판재의 실용화 가능성을 평가하였다.

  • The magnesium is one of the important alloying elements in the conventional aluminum alloys. The addition of magnesium to aluminum is well known to increase the mechanical strength of the aluminum without the trade-off of the decreased elongation. However, the content of magnesium in aluminum alloys has been limited to be lower than about 5wt.% because of the high oxidation tendency of magnesium element during the manufacturing processes such as casting, hot-forming and post heat-treatments, which can deteriorate the quality and properties of the final products. In this study, new 'ECO-Almag6~9' (containing 6~9wt%Mg) alloys were investigated to be made of the ECO-Mg master alloy, which has been invented to reduce the oxidation tendency of itself. It was successfully demonstrated that ECO-Almag6~9 alloys can be fabricated through the mass-production facilities of DC casting and extrusion routes without the problems of magnesium oxidation. In addition, it was confirmed that the strength and ductility were simultaneously improved due to the addition of high magnesium contents.

  • 스테인리스강은 내식성과 내구성이 우수하여 파이프 및 일반 구조용 고온재료에 널리 사용된다. 그러나 선박 및 해양플랜트 등의 고부가가치 산업에 사용될 경우 내피로성, 내구성 및 내식성이 더욱 요구되고 있다. 특히 해수 환경 하에서 스테인리스강은 재료 표면의 부동태 피막 파괴로 공식 또는 틈부식에 의한 국부부식을 초래하여 해양환경용 재료로 사용하는데 제한적이다. 플라즈마 이온질화는 저온에서 열처리가 가능하며 재료의 변형이 없어 스테인리스강에 널리 적용되는 열화학적 표면처리 기술이다. 플라즈마 이온질화는 일반적으로 고온에서 실시하여 스테인리스강의 기계적 특성을 향상시키는 목적으로 주로 적용하였으나, 저온-플라즈마 이온질화 처리 시 질소의 확산계수 증가로 표면에 S-phase 생성에 기인하여 부식 저항성이 향상된다고 알려져 있다[1-2]. 그러나 해수 펌프, 밸브, 스트레이너(Strainer) 등의 해양 환경용 기자재로 널리 사용되고 있는 주조 스테인리스강에 대한 플라즈마 이온질화 적용과 그 연구는 미비하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 주조용 스테인리스강에 대하여 플라즈마 이온질화 기술을 적용하여 공정온도에 따른 해수 내 전기화학적 부식 특성을 규명하였다. 플라즈마 이온질화 공정은 $25%N_2$$75%H_2$ 비율로 $350^{\circ}C{\sim}500^{\circ}C$의 공정온도에서 10시간 동안 실시하였다. X-선 회절분석을 통해 공정온도 변수에 따른 표면에 형성된 질화층의 상변화를 분석하였다. 또한 비커스 경도계를 이용하여 표면경도를 측정하여 기계적 특성 향상을 확인하였다. 전기화학적 부식 실험 후 표면 손상 형상 관찰, 무게 감소량 및 손상 깊이 계측을 통해 공정 온도와 부식 저항 특성을 규명하였다. 또한 타펠 분석을 통해 모재와 플라즈마 이온질화 온도 변수에 따른 부식 속도를 비교 분석하였다.

Development of aluminum alloy sheets for automobile (자동차 차체용 알루미늄 합금 판재개발)

  • 본 연구에서는 차체용 알루미늄 합금 판재의 제조기술 개발을 위하여 선진국에서 사용하고 있는 알루미늄 합금 판재의 기계적 특성을 평가하여 이를 토대로 자동차 차체용 알루미늄 합금 설계 및 판재제조 기술을 개발하고자 한다. 자동차 차체용의 고 Mg계 알루미늄 합금의 양산 제조기술을 개발하기 위하여 Al-7% Mg 합금을 DC주조한 후 열간, 냉간압연 및 열처리 후의 특성을 평가하고 수입소재와 비교하여 실험하였다. 그 결과 자동차 차체용의 고 Mg계 알루미늄 합금 판재개발의 가능성을 확인하였으나 향후 광폭 판재를 제조하기 위해서는 대형 Slab 주조방안, 압연시의 가공성 향상등 판재 제조기술은 물론 성형성, 용접성 및 표면 처리성 등 응용기술에 대한 연구도 활발히 진행되어야 할 것으로 사료된다.

Refining of Steels by $Ar-CO_2$ Plasma (Ar-CO$_2$ Plasma에 의한 강(鋼)의 정련(精鍊))

  • Decarburization phenomena have been studied by plasma in stainless steel, plain carbon steel and cast iron. It was also investigated the movement of impurity element P,S in the plasma jet metal pool. The plasma jet was obtained by $Ar\;-\;CO_2$ gas mixture with 5 kVA DC power source. It produced enough temperature to dissociate into activated oxygen atom by reaction of $CO_2{\leftrightarrows}CO+O^+$ and it reacted with ${\underline{C}}$ in metal pool. Decarburization rate was increased about 5 times in comparing with the conventional induction melted metal pool by $CO_2$ gas decarburization. Even under the Ar plasma jet, decarburization was obtained by agitation of metal bath by $Ar^+$ bombardment and dilution phenomena of carbon atom under the very high plasma temperature. But heavy element P and S are not much removed because they are too heavy in mass to be activated by $Ar^+$ion bombardment. Desulphurization was achieved by $Ar\;-\;CO_2$ plasma in plain carbon steel and cast iron by the reaction of $SO_2({\underline{S}}+O^+)$. But dephosphorization could not be obtained by $Ar\;-\;CO_2$ plasma, because gaseous reaction of phosphorous oxide (${\underline{P}}+O^+$) was not existed.

Corrosion Characteristics of Cast Stainless Steel under Plasma Ion Nitriding Process Temperature in Marine Environment (주조 스테인리스강의 해양환경 하에서 플라즈마 이온질화 공정온도에 따른 부식특성 연구)

  • In order to improve corrosion resistance for cast stainless steel in seawater, the characteristics of corrosion resistance after plasma ion nitriding was investigated. Plasma ion nitriding process was conducted in a mixture of nitrogen of 25% and hydrogen of 75% at substrate temperature ranging from 350 to $500^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours using pulsed-DC glow discharge plasma with working pressure of 250 Pa in vacuum condition. Corrosion tests were carried out for as-received and plasma ion nitrided specimens. The corrosion characteristics were investigated by measurement of weight loss and observation of surface morphology. In anodic polarization experiment, relatively less damage depth and weight loss were presented at a nitrided temperature of $400^{\circ}C$, attributing to the formation of S-phase.

A Study on the Gating System and Simulation for Gravity Casting of ZnDC1 Worm Gear (아연 합금 웜기어의 중력 주조 공정을 위한 주조 방안 설계 및 해석에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the optimum gating system was designed, and the two zinc alloy worm gears were manufactured in single process by applying a symmetrical gating system with 2 runners. The SRG ratio is set to 1 : 0.9 : 0.6, and the cross-sectional shapes such as sprue, runner and gate are designed. In order to determine whether the design of the gating system is appropriate, casting analysis was carried out. It takes 4.380 s to charge the casting 100%, 0.55 to 0.6 m/s at the gates and solidification begins after the casting is fully charged. The amount of air entrapment is 2% in the left gear and 6% in the right gear. Hot spots occurred in the center hole of the gear, and pores were found to occur around the upper part of the hole. Therefore, the design of the casting method is suitable for worm gears. CT analysis showed that all parts of worm gear were distributed with fine pores and some coarse pores were distributed around the central hole of worm gear. The yield strength and tensile strength were 220 MPa, 285 MPa, and the elongation rate was 8%. Vickers hardness is 82 HV.

An Electrochemical Evaluation on the Corrosion Resistance of a Al Alloy (주조용 Al합금의 내식성에 관한 전기화학적 평가)

  • Al is a active metal that owes its resistance to a thin, protective, barrier oxide surface layer, which is stable in air and neutral aqueous solution. Thus Al alloys are widely used in architectural trim. cold & hot-water storage vessels and piping. However Al and most of its alloy may corrode with some forms such as pitting corrosion, intergranular corrosion and galvanic corrosion in the case of exposure to various industrial and marine atmosphere. Therefore a correct evaluation of corrosion resistance for their Al and Al alloys may be more important in a economical point of view. In this study. a relative evaluation of corrosion resistance for three kinds of Al alloys such as ALDC2, ALDC3, and ALDC8 series was carried out with electrochemical method. There is a tendency that corrosion potential is shifted to positive or negative direction by alloying components regardless of corrosion resistance. Moreover the data of corrosion properties obtained from cathodic Polarization curve, cyclic voltammogram and AC. DC impedance respectively showed a good correspondence each other against the corrosion resistance but variation of corrosion potential. passivity current density of anodic polarization curve and corrosion current density by Tafel extrapolation and Stern-Geary method didn't correspond with not only each other but also considerably the data of corrosion properties discussed above. Therefore it is suggested that an optimum electrochemical evaluation for corrosion resistance of Al alloy is to calculate the diffusion limiting current density of cathodic polarization curve, impedance of AC or DC and polarization resistance of cyclic voltammogram.
