Adrenergic, alpha-1B-, receptor (ADRA1B) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, coactivator 1 beta (PPARGC1B) genes are involved in regulation of hen ovarian development. In this study, these two genes were investigated as possible molecular markers associated with hen-housed egg production, egg weight (EW) and body weight in Chinese Dagu hens. Samples were analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) technique, followed by sequencing analysis. Two novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified within the candidate genes. Among them, an A/G transition at base position 1915 in exon 2 of ADRA1B gene and a T/C mutation at base position 6146 in the 3'- untranslated region (UTR) of PPARGC1B gene were found to be polymorphic and named SNP A1915G and T6146C, respectively. The SNP A1915G (ADRA1B) leads to a non-synonymous substitution (aspartic acid 489-to-glycine). The 360 birds from the Dagu population were divided into genotypes AA and AG, allele A was found to be present at a higher frequency. Furthermore, the AG genotype correlated with significantly higher hen-housed egg production (HHEP) at 30, 43, 57, and 66 wks of age and with a higher EW at 30 and 43 wks (p<0.05). For the SNP T6146C (PPARGC1B), the hens were typed into TT and TC genotypes, with the T allele shown to be dominant. The TC genotype was also markedly correlated with higher HHEP at 57 and 66 wks of age and EW at 30 and 43 wks (p<0.05). Moreover, four haplotypes were reconstructed based on these two SNPs, with the AGTC haplotype found to be associated with the highest HHEP at 30 to 66 wks of age and with higher EW at 30 and 43 wks (p<0.05). Collectively, the two SNPs identified in this study might be used as potential genetic molecular markers favorable in the improvement of egg productivity in chicken breeding.
This study is based on data from the food consumption survey on 727 members of 125 farm households from 7 different provinces. The survey was conducted in May, 1975 in cooperation with the O.R.D. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows. 1. The average consumption of the basic food groups per capita per day was 563 g for cereals and grains(398g of rice and 129g of barley), 87.6g for meats and legumes, 317.8g for fruits and vegetables, 25.7g for milks and small fishes, 9.1g for fats and oils, and 45.1g for other group. 2. The average daily consumption of calories and nutrients was 2256 cal and 11.7g for animal proteins, 70.5g for total proteins, 21.6g for fats, 537.4mg for calcium, 18.1mg for iron, 5375lU for vitamin A, 1.27mg for thiamine, 1.05mg for riboflavin, 15.5mg for niacin, 77.7mg for ascorbic acid. When these figures are compared with the recommended allowances for Korean, the calories and nutrients intakes were satisfactory, except for the intakes of animal protein which was below two third of the recommended allowance. 3. The diets of the projected villages differed from those of the non-projected villages in the following respect: (a) The amounts of animal proteins and fats were larger in the projected villages than in the non-projected villages. (b) The percentage contribution of fats to the total amount of calories from three nutrients, carbohydrates, proteins and fats was higher in the projected villages than in tile non-projected villages. (c) The percentage contribution from carbohydrates to the total amount of calories was higher in the non-projected villages than in the projected villages. 4. Certain physical and clinical symptoms were observed among the people in the rural areas, which can be related to the shortages of animal proteins and fats in their diets. It is recommended to pay special attention to the nutrition of school children in the Korean rural areas.
Purpose: The effect of prebiotics intake after administration of a synbiotics mixture (a probiotic, Bifidobacterium longum, and a prebiotic, xylooligosaccharide containing sugar [XOS]) on human intestinal microflora and defecation characteristics was investigated in a randomized controlled trial. Methods: Twenty-five healthy young volunteers (11 males and 14 females) were randomly assigned to 2 groups (BL2XO2 and BL2XO6). The synbiotics mixture was orally administered to both groups for 2 weeks, and the prebiotics were subsequently administered to the BL2XO6 group for 4 additional weeks. The daily dose of the synbiotics mixture comprised 1010 colony-forming unit of Bifidobacterium longum and 10 g of XOS, and during the prebiotics period, the daily dose of prebiotics comprised only 10 g of XOS. The fecal pH, microflora, and defecation characteristics were analyzed at baseline and at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6. Results: The counts of B. longum and Bifidobacterium spp. in the BL2XO6 group exhibited a steady, increasing trend during the synbiotics and prebiotics periods, whereas those of the BL2XO2 group exhibited considerable variation in each week of the study period. Although there was no significant difference, the counts of fecal Bifidobacterium in the BL2XO6 group tended to be higher than those of the BL2XO2 group at week 6. The growth of Lactobacillus spp. exhibited a time-dependent variation, peaking at week 6 in both groups. Low counts of Clostridium spp. were observed after treatment with the synbiotics and prebiotics in the BL2XO6 group (p < 0.05) throughout the study, whereas the inhibitory effect on Clostridium spp. was maintained only during the synbiotics period in the BL2XO2 group. The defecation characteristics did not differ between the two groups. Conclusion: Administration of XOS after a synbiotics mixture containing B. longum and XOS can exert a prebiotic effect in healthy young volunteers by stimulating Bifidobacteriun spp. growth and inhibiting growth of Clostridium spp.
Seven kinds of polyphenol compounds having ACE activities were isolated and purified by Sephadex LH-20, MCI-gel CHP-20, ${\um}-Bondapak\;C_{18}$ and Fuji-gel ODS $G_3$ sucessively from cacao bean(Ghana). The chemical structures of each compound were determined and identified using analyzers such as $^1H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$, IR, MS, polarimeter and Elemental Analysis. Inhibition effects of isolated polyphenols on angiotensin converting enzyme (concerned with hypertension) were also observed. The results obtained were as follows,; The compounds isolated and identified were confirmed and determined as compound 1 [(+)-catechin], compound 2 [(-)-epicatechin], compound 3 [procyanidin B-1 : (-)-epicatechin-$(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)$-(+)catechin], compound 4 [procyanidin B-2 : (-)-epicatechin-$(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)$-(-)-epicatechin], compound 5 [procyanidin B-7 : (-)-epicatechin-$(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}6)$-(+)-catechin], campound 6 (procyanidin B-2,3,3'-O -digallate), compound 7 [cinnamtannin A-2 : (-)-epicatechin-$(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)$-(-)-epicatechin-$(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)$-(-)-epicatechin-$(4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8)$-(-)-epicatechin]. In the inhibition effect on ACE, procyanidin B-2,3,3'-O-digallate (compound 6) showed a higher value of 94.6% for ACE in $100\;{\um}M$ than other compounds such as (+)-catechin (compound 1), (-)-epicatechin (compound 2), procyanidin B-1 (compound 3), procyanidin B-2 (compound 4), procyanidin B-7 (compound 5) and cinnamtannin A-2 (compound 7) showing 67.9%, 61.9%, 88.6%, 82.5%, 72.2% and 82.3% for ACE, respectively. Inhibition of $4{\beta}{\rightarrow}8$ in coupling bond on the ACE enzyme was more effective than that of $4{\beta}{\rightarrow}6$. Procyanidin containing gallate inhibited more effectively than those containing not any. It was also observed that a lot of hydroxy group in the compounds increased the inhibitory effect.

The aim of this study was to test the susceptibility of mice to Trypanosoma evansi treated with human plasma containing different concentrations of apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1). For this experiment, a strain of T. evansi and human plasma (plasmas 1, 2, and 3) from 3 adult males clinically healthy were used. In vivo test used 50 mice divided in 5 groups (A to E) with 10 animals in each group. Animals of groups B to E were infected, and then treated with 0.2 ml of human plasma in the following outline: negative control (A), positive control (B), treatment with plasma 1 (C), treatment with plasma 2(D), and treatment with plasma 3 (E). Mice treated with human plasma showed an increase in longevity of $40.9{\pm}0.3$ (C), $20{\pm}9.0$ (D) and $35.6{\pm}9.3$ (E) days compared to the control group (B) which was $4.3{\pm}0.5$ days. The number of surviving mice and free of the parasite (blood smear and PCR negative) at the end of the experiment was 90%, 0%, and 60% for groups C, D, and E, respectively. The quantification of APOL1 was performed due to the large difference in the treatments that differed in the source plasma. In plasmas 1, 2, and 3 was detected the concentration of 194, 99, and 115 mg/dl of APOL1, respectively. However, we believe that this difference in the treatment efficiency is related to the level of APOL1 in plasmas.
Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and precision machines require excellent friction and wear characteristics to improve energy efficiency generated during sliding motion. In this study, DLC thin film with high hardness and low friction was deposited on STS304 substrate material by CVD method, and dot-shaped convex and concave micropatterns were fabricated by photolithography process. The diameter of the pattern was 20 ㎛, the pitch was 40 ㎛, and a pattern having a mesh type arrangement was fabricated and an abrasion test was performed. The results of the wear test on the micro pattern confirmed that the friction coefficient characteristics were improved compared to STS 304 and DLC thin films. In addition, in this result, the micro-pattern showed 11.4% more improved friction coefficient than the DLC thin film. The friction coefficient characteristics for convex and concave patterns of the same size showed almost similar results.

By comparing the proteins from the workers exposed to styrene with the ones from controls, it may be possible to identify proteins that play a role in the occurrence and progress of occupational disease and thus to study the molecular mechanisms of occupational disease. In order to find the biomarkers for assessing the styrene effects early, before clinical symptoms develop and to understand the mechanisms of adverse health effects, we surveyed 134 employees, among whom 52 workers(30 male and 22 female) were chronically exposed to styrene in 10 glass-reinforced plastic boat manufacturing factories in Korea and 82 controls had never been occupationally exposed to hazardous chemicals including styrene. The age and drinking habits and serum biochemistry such as total protein, BUN and serum creatinine in both groups were significantly different. Exposed workers were divided into three groups according to exposure levels of styrene(G1, below 1/2 TLV; G2, 1/2 TLV to TLV; G3, above TLV). The mean concentration of airborne styrene in G1 group was $10.93{\pm}11.33ppm$, and those of urinary mandelic acid(MA) and phenylglyoxylic acid(PGA) were $0.17{\pm}0.21$ and $0.13{\pm}0.11g/g$ creatinine, respectively. The mean concentration of airborne styrene in G2 and G3 groups were $47.54{\pm}22.43$ and $65.33{\pm}33.47ppm$, respectively, and levels of urinary metabolites such as MA and PGA increased considerably as expected with the increase in exposure level of styrene. The airborne styrene concentration were significantly correlated to the urinary concentration of MA(r=0.784, p=0.000) and PGA(r=0.626, p<0.001). In the 2D electrophoresis, the concentration of five proteins including complement C3 precursor, alpha-1-antitrypsin(AAT), vitamin D binding protein precursor(DBP), alpha-1-B-glycoprotein(A1BG) and inter alpha trypsin inhibitor(ITI) heavy chain-related protein were significantly altered in workers exposed to styrene compared with controls. While expression of complement C3 precursor and AAT increased by exposure to styrene, expression of DBP, A1BG and ITI heavy chain-related protein decreased. These results suggest that the exposure of styrene might affects levels of plasma proteinase, carriers of endogenous substances and immune system. In particular, increasing of AAT with the increase in exposure level of styrene can explain the tissue damage and inflammation by the imbalance of proteinase/antiproteinase and decrease of DBP, A1BG and ITI heavy chain-related protein in workers exposed to styrene is associated with dysfunction and/or declination in immune system and signal transduction

The structure of a $\beta$-allyl type phenylpropanoid was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound was recrystallized from a mixture of n-hexane and benzene in monoclinic crystal system with a = 24.782 (2), b = 10.537 (1), c = 7.871 (1) ${\AA}, \beta=95.74$ (1)$^\circ, $D_x$=1.216, $D_m$=1.22g/$cm^3$, space group $P2_1/a$, and Z=4. The structure was solved by direct method and refined by least-squares procedure to the final R value of 0.054 for 2824 observed reflections {$F{\geq}3\sigma(F)$}. The molecular geometry shows a most stable trans-form with respect to the bulky phenyls, and this conformation is settled by an intramolecular hydrogen bond. In the crystal, the molecules are arranged along with the screw axis, and stabilized by the $O{\cdot}H{\cdots}O$ type intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The other intermolecular contacts appear to be the normal van der Waals' interactions. The compound is a dimeric phenylpropanoid, and belongs to the neolignan analogues.
The molecular structure of a natural compound was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound was isolated by methanol extraction and repeated chromatography from the stem of Paulownia tomentosa. Yellow prismatic crystals of the compound, which were recrystallized from tetrahydrofuran, are triclinic, with a = 7.310 (6), b = 10.753(6), c = 11.586(5) ${\AA}.\;\alpha= 93.30(6),\;\beta=105.62(10),\;\gamma=109.49(7)^\circ,\;D_x=1.514,\;D_m=1.51 g/cm^3$, space group P1 and Z = 2. The structure was solved by direct method, and refined by least-squares procedure to the final R-value of 0.032 for 1271 independent reflections $(F\le3\sigma{(F))}$. The compound is one of new furanquinone analogue. The molecule has a nearly planar conformation with an intramolecular hydrogen bond. In the crystal, the planar molecules are arranged as a prallel sheet-like pattern, and these stackings are stabilized by the O-H...O type intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The other intermolecular contacts appear to be the normal van der Waals interactions.
