Association of coffee consumption with type 2 diabetes and glycemic traits: a Mendelian randomization study

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Habitual coffee consumption was inversely associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hyperglycemia in observational studies, but the causality of the association remains uncertain. This study tested a causal association of genetically predicted coffee consumption with T2D using the Mendelian randomization (MR) method. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We used five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as instrumental variables (IVs) associated with habitual coffee consumption in a previous genome-wide association study among Koreans. We analyzed the associations between IVs and T2D, fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2h-postprandial glucose (2h-PG), and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C) levels. The MR results were further evaluated by standard sensitivity tests for possible pleiotropism. RESULTS: MR analysis revealed that increased genetically predicted coffee consumption was associated with a reduced prevalence of T2D; ORs per one-unit increment of log-transformed cup per day of coffee consumption ranged from 0.75 (0.62-0.90) for the weighted mode-based method to 0.79 (0.62-0.99) for Wald ratio estimator. We also used the inverse-variance-weighted method, weighted median-based method, MR-Egger method, and MR-PRESSO method. Similarly, genetically predicted coffee consumption was inversely associated with FBG and 2h-PG levels but not with HbA1c. Sensitivity measures gave similar results without evidence of pleiotropy. CONCLUSIONS: A genetic predisposition to habitual coffee consumption was inversely associated with T2D prevalence and lower levels of FBG and 2h-PG profiles. Our study warrants further exploration.

  • In the present paper, a method of nearly orthogonal grid generation in an arbitrary simply-connected 3D domain will be presented. The method is a new direct and non-iterative scheme based on the concept of the decomposition of the global orthogonal transformation into consecutive mapping of a conformal mapping and an auxiliary orthogonal mapping, which was suggested by King and Leal [4]. In our numerical scheme. Kang and Leal's method is extended from 2D problems to 3D problems while the advantage of the non-iterative algorithm is maintained. The essence of the present mapping method is that an iterative scheme can be avoided by introducing a preliminary step. This preliminary step corresponds to a conformal map and is based on the boundary element method(BEM). This scheme is applied to generate several nearly-orthogonal grid systems which are orthogonal at boundaries.

페니토인-${\beta}$-시클로덱스트린 포접 복합체의 좌제에 관한 연구 (Studies on Suppositories of $Phenytoin-{\beta}-Cyclodextrin$ Inclusion Complexes)

  • An inclusion complex of phenytoin (PT) with ${\beta}-cyclodextrin\;({\beta}-CyD)$ in molar ratio of 1 : 1 was prepared, and the interaction between host and guest molecules was confirmed by infrared spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractometry. Suppositories were prepared by the fusion method. PT and $PT-{\beta}-CyD$ complex were added to PEG 1540 and Witepsol H-15 under the vigorous stirring at $40^{\circ}C$. Content uniformity was tested for different formulations of the PT suppositories. The release rates were dependent on the K.P. V dissolution apparatus and the dialyzing tubing method. Then, the release rates were increased in the following order: $PT-{\beta}-CyD$ complex in PEG 1540>PT in PEG 1540>$PT-{\beta}-CyD$ complex in Witepsol H-15>PT in Witepsol H-15. The area under the curve and maximum blood concentration after rectal administration were increased in the following order: $PT-{\beta}-CyD$ complex in PEG 1540>PT in PEG 1540>$PT-{\beta}-CyD$ complex in Witepsol H-15>PT in Witepsol-15.

유공 H 형강보의 보강효율에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Reinforcing Efficiency of H-Shaped Steel Beams with a Rectangular Web Opening)

  • Despite of decrease in shear and moment strengths, most steel structural designers use web openings in beams because of economical benefit and requirement. The purpose of this study is to suggest the method of reinforcement of H-shape steel beams with a rectangular web opening. If shear predominates over bending, it is necessary to consider all possible combinations of shear force and bending moment acting at the opening. In this paper, the ultimate strength and behavior of perforated beams have been investigated according to parameters (ratio of M/V, opening width within opening height ratio D/h, various reinforcing types A/B/C/D/M/N/W). The results of this study are as follows ; 1. Deformation of H-shape steel beams with a rectangular web opening was greatly affected by not only bending but also shear. 2. SB1-2/3 series have little difference in the reinforced efficiency, but SB1-2E/3E series have difference in the reinforced efficiency according to the reinforcement type. 3. Efficiency of SB1-2E/3E series is determined by reinforcing types, which RB1-2E-B/M/C and RB1-3E-M/D/C specimens have good efficient. Reinforcing type of perforated beams chooses efficient method according to ratio of M/V and D/h.

다류원료 식물류 물 추출물의 항산화 효과 (The Antioxidative Effects of the Water-Soluble Extracts of Plants Used as Tea Materials)

  • 본 연구는 다류원료 식물류의 물 추출물에 대해 항산화성을 검토하고 그 항산화 물질(페놀성 화합물, 비타민 C, 셀레늄)을 분석하였다. 대두유에 식물류의 물 추출물을 0.02%(추출고형분 함량, w/w) 첨가하여 $55^{\circ}C$ 공기순환식 인큐베이터에서 36일 저장기간 동안 과산화물가 측정과 $110^{\circ}C$에서 Rancimat 방법에 의해 항산화성을 검토하였으며 첨가제가 들어있지 않은 대두유를 대조구에 사용했고 0.02% BHT 첨가한 대두유는 비교구로 사용하였다. 대조구와 BHT 첨가구에 비해 산화 유도기간이 $55^{\circ}C$에서는 구기자, 우롱차, 귤껍질(진피), 유자, 매실 물 추출물 등이 길었으며 $110^{\circ}C$에서는 우롱차, 인스탄트커피, 유자, 구기자, 오미자, 매실 물 추출물 등이 길었다. 추출고형분 g당 총페놀성 물질 함량은 우롱차, 녹차, 홍차, 커피, 계피, 결명자 물 추출물 등에서 높았고 비타민 C 함량은 커피, 두충, 홍차, 영지, 계피, 감잎, 치커리, 녹차, 우롱차 물 추출물 등에서 높았으며 셀레늄은 모든 물 추출물에서 검출되지 않았다. 이들의 항산화성은 단일 항산화성 물질의 효과에 기인하기 보다는 페놀성 화합물, 비타민 C 등 복합적 효과에 의한 것으로 사료된다.

  • The permanent magnet in hybrid step motor is magnetized to the axial direction. Accordingly the 2D analysis method such as 2D finite element method cannot guarantee the analysis accuracy. In this paper, the characteristics of hybrid type step motor are analyzed by using 3D equivalent magnetic circuit network method(3D EMCNM). 3D EMCNM supplements magnetic equivalent circuit by numerical technique using distributive magnetic circuit parameter and 3D EMCNM is used for the accurate and efficient analysis. The validity of the analysis results is confirmed by comparing with the experimental ones.

  • Safety of workers and productivity in construction site are affected according to the conflict status of work spaces which are performed at a time. The interference among the work spaces in construction site should be minimized because it becomes a blocking factor that causes construction delay and low productivity. Those factors can be managed by reasonable H&S (Health & Safety) practice. This research suggests the requirements of H&S practice and rules to establish the strategy of H&S management based on the literature reviews related to H&S rule. The suggested H&S rule can be visualized for searching space conflict point if the rule is linked with visual simulation tool. Accordingly the research results can be used for improving and visualizing construction productivity by work space control in 4D/nD CAD system.

  • This paper describes the design of echo cancslling method(ECM) for transmission with full-duplex which ie transmitted on "2B+D"(144kbps)data through two-wire loop plants. The design objective is 40dB attenuation with a signal-to-noise ratio of $10{\sim}20dB$. Since the transhybrid loos can be as low as $6{\sim}10dB$, the required attenuation of the echo signal is on the order of $50{\sim}55dB$. The used algorithms based on the sign algorithm, and have been improved by using adoptive reference voltage level algorithm.

적응적 배타적 논리합을 이용한 깊이정보 맵 코딩 방법 (A Depth-map Coding Method using the Adaptive XOR Operation)

  • 본 논문에서는 실제 영상과는 다른 특성을 지니는 깊이정보 맵의 효율적인 부호화 방법을 제안한다. 깊이정보 맵은 객체 내부 혹은 배경 부분에서 상당히 완만한 특성을 지니지만, 객체 경계 부분에서는 아주 날카로운 에지 성분이 존재한다는 특징이 있다. 그리고 깊이정보 맵을 비트평면 단위로 분리하였을 때, 비트평면 간 완전일치/반전일치되는 특성이 객체 경계 부분에서 자주 발생한다는 특징이 있다. 그래서 본 논문에서는 객체 경계 부분에서 비트평면의 이진 영상간 일치여부를 적절하게 이용하기 위하여 깊이정보 맵을 비트평면 단위로 분리하여 비트평면 간 적응적 XOR 연산을 이용한 블록 기반 비트평면 부호화 방법을 제안한다. 또한 비트평면 단위 영상 부호화 방법과 DCT 기반 동영상 압축 방법(H.264/AVC)의 장점을 적절하게 이용하기 위하여 블록 단위 비트평면 부호화 방법과 기존의 블록 단위 동영상 부호화 방법을 적응적으로 선택하여 부호화하였다. 실험 결과 제안하는 방법이 H.264/AVC보다 BD-PSNR이 0.9 dB ~ 1.5 dB 향상되었고 BD-rate가 11.8 % ~ 20.8 % 감소되었다. 또한 제안하는 방법이 블록 기반 적응적 깊이정보 맵 부호화 방법보다 BD-PSNR이 0.5 dB ~ 0.8 dB 향상되었고 BD-rate가 7.7 % ~ 12.2 % 감소되어 제안하는 방법의 우수함을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 복원된 깊이정보 맵을 이용하여 생성된 가상 영상 간의 비교에서 제안하는 방법이 DCT 기반 동영상 압축 방법보다 주관적 화질이 향상된 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 블록 기반 적응적 깊이정보 맵 부호화 방법과 비교하여 주관적 화질이 비슷하다는 것을 확인 할 수 있었다.
