  • Root absorption, translocation and metabolism studies of $^{14}C$-bensulfuron in rice and Cyperus serotinus Rottb. were conducted to determine their selective mode of action. Rice absorbed a greater amount of bensulfron than Cyperus serotinus. The translocation rates of bensulfuron from roots into shoots were much faster in Cyperus serotinus than rice plants. The metabolic rate of bensulfuron was very fast in rice plants, but slow in Cyperus serotinus and therefore, the amount of parent bensulfuron remained in the shoots after 12 hours absorption was greater in Cyperus serotinus than rice. In conclusion, this studies indicated that Cyperus serotinus was susceptible to bensulfuron because of the slower metabolic rate and fast translocation rate, but tolerance of rice might be caused by faster metabolic rate in plants.

  • Competitive ability was determined for two different varieties, Josaengtongil (early maturing indicajaponica type) and Jinheung (medium maturing japonica type), against Cyperus serotinus(nut sedge). An increase of rice density increased competitive ability of rice to C. serotinus. The results indicate that the use of tall and medium maturingvariety like Jinheung provides better competitive ability against C. serotinus than Josaengtongil, a semi-dwarf and early maturing type.

  • In order to enhance herbicidal efficacy of amide and diazine herbicides, synergistic effects of pretilachlor and pyrazoxyfene or butachlor and pyrazolate on control of Cyperus serotinus were determined by isobole method. Interaction indices(I) between pretilachlor and pyrazoxyfene treated at 0 and 3rd leaf stage were 2.64 and 2.07 and hence showed synergistic effect for control of Cyperus serotinus. The points indicated Imax between pretilachlor and pyrazoxyfene were 0.7:1.3 g ai/a and 9.0:20.5 g ai/a at 0 and 3rd leaf stage, respectively. Combination of butachlor and pyrazolate showed synergistic effect(1=1.57) on control of Cyperus serorinus and point indicated Imax was 48.0:20.9 g ai/a.

  • This study was conducted to determine the possible role of growth regulators and the effect of foliar part cutting on the tuber formation of C. serotinus. Foliar application of 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) increased tuber number and fresh weight of C. serotinus by an average of 24.7% and 32.4%, respectively, as compared with the untreated control. However, the tuberization of C. seratinus was inhibited by single treatment of abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA) as the concentrations increased. As compared with the untreated control, BA at $10^{-4}$M and combination of BA $10^{-5}$ + GA $10^{-5}$M increased 31.8% and 53.7% of tuber number, respectively, but GA at $10^{-5}$M decreased tuber number by 21.9%. 15㎏/10a of nitrogen under three levels of BA resulted in the highest number of tuber formation of C. serotinus, an increase of 24.7% as compared with the untreated control. GA treated increased flowering of C. serotinus by an average of 4.8% based on the untreated control. Tuber number and fresh weight of C. serotinus was markedly inhibited as the number of cutting times increased. Three times cutting inhibited tuber number and fresh weight of C. serotinus by 76.1% and 96.6%, respectively, under nitrogen of 15kg per 10a as compared with the untreated control.

  • In order to determine selective mode of action of naproanilide between rice and paddy weeds, absorption and translocation of $^{14}C$-naproanilide in rice, Echinochloa crus galli, Cyperus serotinus, and Sagittaria pygmaea were studied, Rice plant and Echinochloa crus-galli absorbed less amount of $^{14}C$-naproanilide than Sagittaria pygmaeo and Cyperus serotinus. Less amount of $^{14}C$-naproanilide was translocated into shoots and translocation rate was slower in rice and Ecl:inochloa crzis-galli than that of Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperars serotinus. Also, 30-40% of $^{14}C$-naproanilide was distributed at tubers of Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperus serotinus, which explained that higher amount of $^{14}C$-naproanilide was absorbed from tubers. $^{14}C$-naproanilide was gradually decreased in all plant species and finally more radioactivity was determined in Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperus serotinus than in Echinochloa cars-galli and rice plant after $^{14}C$-naproanilide treated plants were transferred to Kasugai solution.

  • Photosynthetic activity of two rice varieties "Suweon 318, Nagdongbyeo" and two species of grass weeds, two species of sedge weeds, and four species of broadleaf weeds was measured at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 Klux light intensity. Relative photosynthetic activity of weed species was high in the decreasing order in Cyperus serotinus, Echinochloa grusgalli var caudata, Bidens tripartita, Monochoria vaginalis, and Ludwigia prostrata, while respiration rate was high in Bidens tripartite, Monochoria vaginalis and Cyperus serotinus. Light saturation point of Monochoria vaginalis and Sagittaria pygrnaea may be considered as at 30 klux and photosynthetic rate of other weed species increased with increasing light intensity. Photosynthetic activity of weed species was generally two times higher than rice at the light intensity of 50 klux and increased more than rice as light intensity increased. Photosynthetic activity per leaf dry weight and specific leaf area was higher in broadleaf weeds than in grass and sedge weed species.

  • This study was conducted to predict the rice yield loss and to determine the economic threshold levels for direct-seeding flooded rice cultivation from competition to the most serious perennial weeds, Cyperus serotinus Rottb. and Echinochloa crus-galli L. The rice yield loss model of C. serotinus and E. crus-galli were predicted as Y = 560 kg/(1+0.001883x), $r^2$=0.933, and Y = 507 kg/(1+0.001734x), $r^2$=0.867, respectively. In comparison of the competitiveness represented by parameter ${\beta}$, it was 0.001883 in C. serotinus and 0.001734 in E. crus-galli, respectively. Economic thresholds calculated using Cousens' equation were negatively related with the competitiveness of weed. The economic thresholds of C. serotinus and E. crus-galli were 15.5 and 2.3 plants per $m^2$, respectively.

  • Germination test, nutrient culture test and pot experiment were conducted to determine selectivity of naproanilide between rice plants and paddy weeds. Naproanilide more severely inhibited growth of Scirpus juncoides, Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyerus serotinus than that of rice plant and Echinochloa crus-galli at germination stage. Root growth was severely inhibited than that of shoot growth by naproanilide treatment. Naproanilide severely inhibited rice plant and Echinochloa crus-galli at 30 uM, Sagittaria pygmaea at 1 uM and Cyperus serotinus at 10 uM in nutrient culture test, Rice plant and Echinochloa crus-galli did not show the difference of tillers and dry weight, but Scirpus juncoides, Morzochoria vaginalis and Aneilema keisak were severely inhibited at 15g/a and Sagittaria pygmaea and Cyperus serotinus at 30g/a in pot trial.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the effect of competitive duration and density of Cyperus serotinus Rottb. on rice growth and yield. In plant height of both rice and flatsedge, the compacter density of flatsedge, the higher was plant height. Rice in the 50 days competition with flatsedge had shorter culm than in other competition plots at all density. The panicle number was affected during the tillering stage. The spikelet number per panicle was influenced from 25 days to 50 days after transplanting. Grain maturity ratio and 1,000 grain-weight didn't decrease under competition before 50 days after transplanting. The competition during the tillering stage to the young panicle initiation stage decreased significantly rice yield. The rice competed with low density of flat sedge showed small decrement of yield and its components. The period reaching to maximum stem number of flatsedge become shorter as flatsedge density increased. Number of flatsedge tubers competed with rice produced was 40.1, 16.8 and 11.4 times as much in 1: 1, 1:3 and 1:5 density ratio of rice to flatsedge, respectively. Flatsedge dry matter weight and rough rice yield had the relationship of Y = 601. 95-$0.67x^{**}$.
