  • Many plants, which collected from Korea, were applied to antitumor and cytotoxic screeing tests against sarcom 180 a ascitec in mice, V-79 KB and P388 cultured cells. The results are summarixed as follows:1) The total packed cell volum method has been used for the antineoplastic screening for from natural higher plants in Korea. By this method, we have found out that the root, leaf and stem of Tripterygiu, regelii Spragne & Taketa having strong antineoplastic activity and also Rumex Japonicus Houtt. Eragrositis ferru-ginea Beauv. and Patrinia scabio-saefolia Fischer showed significant activity to anticancer tumor while cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley, and Rosa polyantha Sieb. et Zacc. showed slight activity to antitumor. 2) Among the 13 tested plants, the root and stem of Tripterygium regelii Spragne & Taketa and Amethystanthus excisus Nakai showed strong antitumor activity by the V79 cytotoxic cell screening test. 3) Twelve plants, which are glowing in mountainous area of Korea tested to anticancer activity. From the results, Eragrositis ferru-ginea Beauv., Angelica gigas Nakai, Geranium sibiricum L., Patrinia scabio-saefolia Fisher, Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley, and Rubia akane Nakai have been proved to be anti-cancer plants by using P388 cell cultured method. 4) Tripterygiu, resgelii Spragne & Taketa, Eragrositis ferru-ginea Beauv., Patrinia scabio-saefoli Fisher, Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley and Rasa polyantha Sieb. et Zacc., var. genuina Thunb. showed strong anti-tumor activity both total packed cell volume method and Cytotoxicity method.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of seeding date on the growth and yield of Cynanchum wilfordii. Hemsley emergence date was May 16 with seeding on March 20 and was June 4 with seeding on April 30, and required days to emergence was shortened as seeding date was delayed. Vine length was longer about 5cm with seeding on March 30 than that of seeding on march 20 and no. of leaves was small about 5 to 16 as seeding date was delayed. Root length was longer about 0. 9cm to 1. 8cm as seeding date was delayed than that of seeding on March 20, but no. of roots had no differences among seeding dates. Yield of root was more increased 18% with seeding on March 30, 10% with seeding on April 10 and April 20 than 207kg/10a with seeding on March 20. As the results of regression analysis, the optimum seeding date of Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley was considered April 6 in plain area of central inland.

  • To determine whether metabolite fingerprinting for whole cell extracts based on Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy can be used to discriminate and compare metabolic equivalence, standard medicinal parts from four medicinal plants (Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsley, Atractylodes japonica Koidz, Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg and Astragalus membranaceus Bunge) and their in vitro-produced adventitious roots were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy. The principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) from the FT-IR spectral data showed that the whole metabolic pattern from Cynanchum wilfordii was highly similar to Astragalus membranaceus. However, Atractylodes japonica and Polygonum multiflorum showed significantly different metabolic patterns. Furthermore, adventitious roots from Cynanchum wilfordii and Astragalus membranaceus also showed similar metabolic patterns compared to their standard medicinal parts. These results clearly show that mass proliferation of adventitious roots may be applied to aquire novel supply of standard medicinal parts from medicinal plants. However, the whole metabolic pattern from adventitious roots of Atractylodes japonica and Polygonum multiflorum were not similar to their standard medicinal parts. Furthermore, FT-IR spectroscopy combined with multivariate analyses established in this study may be applied as an alternative tool to discriminate the whole metabolic equivalence from several standard medicinal parts. Thus, we suggest that these metabolic discrimination systems may be applied for metabolic standardization of herbal medicinal resources.
