The sands which use for soil improvement of soft ground at coastal area contain more or less amount of shells. In this research the effects of shell contents on the liquefaction resistance of the shelly sand were studied. NGI cyclic simple shear tests were performed for the shell-sands with shell contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% under the effective vertical stress of 50kPa, 100kPa and 150kPa for 40% and 55% of relative density, respectively. Cyclic simple shear test results showed that for the low effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased rapidly with increase of shell contents in both 40% and 55% relative density. On the other hand, for the high effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased slightly in 40% relative density and was almost same in 55% relative density. Liquefaction resistance decreased with increasing effective vertical stress for both 40% and 55% relative density. In the same effective vertical stress and shell contents, liquefaction resistance increased with the increase of relative density.
Usually, the cyclic shear stress ratio (CSR) for the assessment of liquefaction has been determined by performing ground response analysis or adopting simplified method suggested by Seed & Idriss with some modifications. In order to analyze the applicability of the CSR evaluation methods, the present study performed one-dimensional equivalent linear analysis and evaluated CSR based on design codes from FHWA, JRA, and KDS. The comparison of the CSR obtained from each code showed that the CSR from KDS showed the largest error with the analysis results. The reason is because KDS has an error, which defines the stress reduction coefficient applying the maximum acceleration at each depth, not the maximum cyclic shear stress mobilized in the soil.
It is well known all much information for evaluation on possibility of liquefaction and lateral flow for sand over the world. Recently, it is started to be known that liquefaction happens on non-plastic silt, too. But cyclic and post-cyclic characteristics for non-plastic silt is a few familiar to the world. Specially, it is not aware of the estimating method for lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The main purpose in this paper is to propose the evaluation for liquefaction and lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The method used in this research is that possibility for liquefaction on non-plastic silt was evaluated with cyclic direct simple shear test, and then residental strength was estimated with static shear test. Through the test results liquefaction on non-plastic silt is well not happened but strength decreases rapidly with increasing shear stress. With the proposed method it can be evaluated possibility of liquefaction and propose lateral flow.

Adopting a rational engineering methodology for building structures on sandy-clay soil layers has become increasingly important since it is crucial when structures erected on them often face seismic and cyclic wave loads. Such loads can cause a reduction in the stiffness, strength, and stability of the structure, particularly under un-drained conditions. Hence, this study aims to investigate how the dynamic properties of sand-clay mixtures are affected by loading frequency and clay content. Cyclic triaxial tests were performed on a total of 36 samples, comprising pure sand with a relative density of 60% and sand with varying percentages of clay. The tests were conducted under confining pressures of 50 and 100 kPa, and the samples' dynamic behavior was analyzed at loading frequencies of 0.1, 1, and 4 Hz. The findings indicate that an increase in confining pressure leads to greater inter-particle interaction and a reduced void ratio, which results in an increase in the soil's shear modulus. An increase in the shear strength and confinement of the samples led to a decrease in energy dissipation and damping ratio. Changes in loading frequency showed that as the frequency increased, the damping ratio decreased, and the strength of the samples increased. Increasing the loading frequency not only reflects changes in frequency but also reduces the relative permeability and enhances the resistance of samples. An analysis of the dynamic properties of sand and sand-clay mixtures indicates that the introduction of clay to a sand sample reduces the shear modulus and permeability properties.
This study presents static and dynamic strength of coal ashes collected from disposal site of power plant. Main compositions of coal ashes were bottom ashes. In order to evaluate static and dynamic characteristics of coal ash, NGI direct-simple shear tests, cyclic simple shear tests and direct shear tests were conducted. The strengths of coal ashes from those tests were compared to those of sands. Bottom ashes among coal ashes used for this study were classified as sand from the grain size distribution and show higher strength properties than the sands. For utilization of coal ashes in civil engineering project, mixing coal ashes with sandy soil using batch plant is inconvenient and the cost is higher than the spreading sand layer and coal layer alternately. In order to simulate both mixing type and layered type construction, sands and coal ashes were mixed with volume ratio 50:50 and prepared sand and coal ash layers alternately with the same volume ratio. From the tests mixed coal ashes-specimen shows slightly higher static and cyclic strength than the layered specimen at the same density. The higher strength seems due to the angular grain of bottom ashes. The cyclic stress ratio at liquefaction decreases rapidly as the number of cycle increases at mixed specimen than that of layered specimen.
In this study, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed with three different consolidation stress ratios ($K_c$=1.0, 1.5, 2.0) to investigate the undrained shear strength characteristics of sands with respect to the amount of contained silt located around the basin of Nak-dong River. The test results show that the more the sand has silt, the lower is cyclic shear stress ratio (CSR) in all $K_c$ and that the higher $K_c$ goes, the larger CSR decreases due to the increase of contained silt. The excessive pore pressure caused during shearing has an influence on the decrease of CSR by the high initial pore pressure in proportion to the amount of contained silt regardless of the $K_c$ value. After consolidation, the analysis of the skeleton void ratio of the sample reveals that the main cause of the decrease of CSR as well as the increase of the initial excessive pore pressure is the increase of the skeleton void ratio in proportion to the amount of contained silt.
Reinforced soil and Expanded Polystyrenes (EPS) mixture (RSEM) is a geomaterial which has many merits, such as light weight, wide strength range, easy for construction, and economic feasibility. It has been widely applied to improve soft ground, solve bridge head jump, fill cavity in pipeline and widen highway. Reutilizing dredged sediment to produce RSEM as earthfill can not only consume a large amount of waste sediment but also significantly reduce the construction cost. Therefore, there is an urgent need understand the basic stress-strain characteristics of reinforced dredged sediment-EPS mixture (RDSEM). A series of cyclic triaxial tests were then carried out on the RDSEM and control clay. The effects of cement content, EPS beads content and confining pressure on the cyclic stress-strain behaviour of RDSEM were analyzed. It is found that the three stages of dynamic stress-strain relationship of ordinary soil, vibration compaction stage, vibration shear stage and vibration failure stage are also applicative for RDSEM. The cyclic stress-strain curves of RDSEM are lower than that of control clay in the vibration compaction stage because of its high moisture content. The slopes of backbone curves of RDSEMs in the vibration shear stage are larger than that of control clay, indicating that the existence of EPS beads provides plastic resistance. With the increase of cement content, the cyclic stress-strain relationship tends to be steeper. Increasing cement content and confining pressure could improve the cyclic strength and cyclic stiffness of RDSEM.

In order to investigate the dynamic deformation properties of rockfill materials in small strain level, cyclic triaxial tests were conducted using the large cyclic triaxial testing apparatus, which was developed by Water Resources Research Institute of KOWACO in 2001. Two types of rockfill materials consisting of granite and shale-sandstone were tested in this study. The test results show that G/G$\_$max/ of granite specimen decreases more than that of shale-sandstone with the increase of shear strain and the increase ratio in the maximum shear modulus G$\_$max/ of granite is bigger than the ratio of shale-sandstone.

Large Concrete Panel Structures behave quite differently from frame or monolithic shear wall structures because of the weakness of Joint in stiffness and strength. The joint experiences large deformation such as shear-slip in vertical and horizontal joint and rocking and crushing in horizontal joint because of localized stress concentration, but the wall panels behave elastically under cyclic loads. In order to describe the nonlinear behavior of the joint in the analysis of PC structures, different analysis technique from that of RC structures is needed. In this paper, for analysis of large concrete panel subassemblage subjected to cyclic loads, the wall panels are idealized by elastic finite elements, and the joints by nonlinear spring elements with various load-deflection relationship. The analytical results are compared with the experimental results on the strength, stiffness, energy dissipation and lateral drift, and the effectiveness of this computer analysis modelling technique is checked.

Cyclic simple shear test apparatus was used to investigate the dynamic response of liquefiable soils as reclamation material. The specimen were reclamation using simple air-pluviation method. The confining stress was applied the range of 100 kpa to 200 kpa. The resulted strain was in the range of $10^{-3}$ ~ 5 %. Based on these test results modulus reduction curve, damping curve and cyclic strength curve were developed. The developed curves were compared to those already available in literature. The obtained curves can be applied to FEM or equivalent linear analysis such as SHAKE for ground response analysis.
