Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.

The development of a new experimental method is required to easily observe the growth behavior of fatigue cracks. To satisfy the requirement, an image processing technique was introduced to fatigue testing. The length of surface fatigue crack could be successfully measured by the image processing system. At first, the image data of cracks were stored into the computer while the cyclic loading was interrupted. After testing, crack length was determined using an image processing software which was developed by authors. Various image processing techniques like a block matching method was applied tc the detection of surface fatigue cracks. By comparing the data measured by the image processing system with those by the manual measurement with a microscope, the effectiveness of the image processing system was established. If the proposed method is used to monitor and observe the crack growth behavior automatically, the time and efforts for fatigue test could be dramatically reduced.
Poly(ethyleneglycol diacrylate)(PEGDA) or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate(2EHA)-based gel polymer electrolytes(GPEs) which have a solid content in the range of 8~54 wt% were synthesized and their ionic conductivity and electrochemical properties were measured at room temperature. It was observed that the ionic conductivity over $1\times10^{-3}$ S/cm was obtained in a homogeneous PEGDA-based GPE with 21 wt% of solid content. However the electrochemical stability of the GPE was lower than that of a liquid electrolyte. The presence of AIBN initiator which can produce a N2 gas during polymerization process might be the reason of this low oxidation decomposition potential. As an alternative, benzoyl peroxide was used as an initiator and GPE with enhanced electrochemical stability was obtained. Finally, the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase on a graphite anode was evidenced by cyclic voltammetry measurement.
We propose a polarization phase-shifting technique to investigate the thickness of $Ta_2O_5$ thin films deposited on BK7 substrates, using a modified Sagnac interferometer. Incident light is split by a polarizing beam splitter into two orthogonal linearly polarized beams traveling in opposite directions, and a quarter-wave plate is inserted into the common path to create an unbalanced phase condition. The linearly polarized light beams are transformed into two circularly polarized beams by transmission through a quarter-wave plate placed at the output of the interferometer. The proposed setup, therefore, yields rotating polarized light that can be used to extract a relative phase via the self-reference system. A thin-film sample inserted into the cyclic path modifies the output signal, in terms of the phase retardation. This technique utilizes three phase-shifted intensities to evaluate the phase retardation via simple signal processing, without manual adjustment of the output polarizer, which subsequently allows the thin film's thickness to be determined. Experimental results show that the thicknesses obtained from the proposed setup are in good agreement with those acquired by a field-emission scanning electron microscope and a spectroscopic ellipsometer. Thus, the proposed interferometric arrangement can be utilized reliably for non-contact thickness measurements of transparent thin films and characterization of optical devices.

In this paper, we describe a portable potentiostat which is capable of cyclic voltammetry(CV) and amperometry for electrochemical dissolved oxygen sensor. In addition, this portable potentiostat can also transmit the measured data wirelessly to android devices such as smart phone, tablet, etc. through Bluetooth. The potentiostat system consists of three parts; a voltage generator circuit which is controlled by Arduino nano and 12-bit DAC(digital to analog converter) to generate necessary electric potential for operating the electrochemical sensor, an oxidation/reduction current measurement circuit, and a Bluetooth module to transmit data wirelessly to an android device. Once measurements are carried out with the android application, the measured data is transmitted to the android device via Bluetooth and displayed using the android app. in real time. In this paper, we report the measured reduction current with a fabricated dissolved oxygen sensor in both saturated-oxygen state and zero-oxygen states. The results of the developed portable potentiostat system are in good agreement with those of the commercial portable potentiostat (${\mu}stat200$, Dropsens inc.). The measured peak reduction currents using the developed potentiostat and the commercial ${\mu}stat200$ potentiostat were $-0.755{\mu}A$ and $-0.724{\mu}A$, respectively. The reduction currents measured at zero-oxygen state were $-0.005{\mu}A$ and $-0.004{\mu}A$. The discrepancy between those two systems seems very small, which implies successful development of a portable and wireless potentionstat.

This paper presents a fast-simplified successive cancellation (SC) flipping (Fast-SSC-Flip) decoding algorithm for polar code. Firstly, by researching the probability distribution of the number of error bits in a node caused by channel noise in simplified-SC (SSC) decoder, a measurement criterion of node reliability is proposed. Under the guidance of the criterion, the most unreliable nodes are firstly located, then the unreliable bits are selected for flipping, so as to realize Fast-SSC-Flip decoding algorithm based on node reliability (NR-Fast-SSC-Flip). Secondly, we extended the proposed NR-Fast-SSC-Flip to multiple node (NR-Fast-SSC-Flip-ω) by considering dynamic update to measure node reliability, where ω is the order of flip-nodes set. The extended algorithm can correct the error bits in multiple nodes, and get good performance at medium and high signal-to-noise (SNR) region. Simulation results show that the proposed NR-Fast-SSC-Flip decoder can obtain 0.27dB and 0.17dB gains, respectively, compared with the traditional Fast-SSC-Flip [14] and the newly proposed two-bit-flipping Fast-SSC (Fast-SSC-2Flip-E2) [18] under the same conditions. Compared with the newly proposed partitioned Fast-SSC-Flip (PA-Fast-SSC-Flip) (s=4) [18], the proposed NR-Fast-SSC-Flip-ω (ω=2) decoder can obtain about 0.21dB gain, and the FER performance exceeds the cyclic-redundancy-check (CRC) aided SC-list (CRC-SCL) decoder (L=4).
In the present research, a simple electrochemical sensor based on a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with ZnO-Zn2SnO4-SnO2 and graphene (ZnO-Zn2SnO4-SnO2/Gr/CPE) was developed for the direct, simultaneous and individual electrochemical measurement of Acetaminophen (AC), Caffeine (Caf) and Ascorbic acid (AA). The synthesized nano-materials were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry were applied for electrochemical investigation ZnO-Zn2SnO4-SnO2/Gr/CPE, and the impact of scan rate and the concentration of H+ on the electrode's responses were investigated. The voltammograms showed a linear relationship between the response of the electrode for individual oxidation of AA, AC and, Caf in the range of 0.021-120, 0.018-85.3, and 0.02-97.51 μM with the detection limit of 8.94, 6.66 and 7.09 nM (S/N = 3), respectively. Also, the amperometric technique was applied for the measuring of the target molecules in the range of 0.013-16, 0.008-12 and, 0.01-14 μM for AA, AC and, Caf with the detection limit of 6.28, 3.64 and 3.85 nM, respectively. Besides, the ZnO-Zn2SnO4-SnO2/Gr/CPE shows an excellent selectivity, stability, repeatability, and reproducibility for the determination of AA, AC and, Caf. Finally, the proposed sensor was successfully used to show the amount of AA, AC and, Caf in urine, blood serum samples with recoveries ranging between 95.8% and 104.06%.

Household refrigerator cabinets must undergo cyclic testing at -20 ℃ and 65 ℃ for quality control (QC) after their production is complete. These cabinets were assembled from different materials, including acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyurethane (PU) foam, and steel plates. However, different thermal expansion values could be observed owing to differences in the mechanical properties of the materials. In this study, a technique to predict delamination on a refrigerator wall caused by thermal deformation was developed. The mechanical properties of ABS and PU foams were tested, theload factors causing delamination were analyzed, delamination was observed using a high-speed camera, and comparison and verification in terms of stress and strain were performed using a finite element model (FEM). The results indicated that the delamination phenomenon of a refrigerator wall can be defined in two cases. A method for predicting and evaluating delamination was established and applied in an actual refrigerator. To determine the effect of temperature changes on the refrigerator, strain measurements were performed at the weak point and the stress was calculated. The results showed that the proposed FEM prediction technique can be used as a basis for virtual testing to replace future QC testing, thus saving time and cost.
Glucose detection is particularly important for clinical diagnosis and personal prevention and control. Herein, the smartphone-based amperometric glucose sensors were constructed using the NiS/CuS nanorods (NRs) as sensing electrodes. The NiS/CuS NRs were prepared through a facile hydrothermal process accompanied by the subsequent vulcanization treatment. The morphological and structural properties of NiS/CuS NRs were characterized with SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. Electrochemical measurements including cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy display that NiS/CuS NRs can act as highly efficient electrocatalyst for glucose detection. The NiS/CuS NRs electrodes present a wide detection range of 1-8000 µM for glucose sensing with the sensitivity of 956.38 µA·mM-1·cm-2. The detection limit was 0.35 µM (S/N=3). When employed in smartphone-based glucose sensing device, they also display a high sensitivity of 738.09 µA·mM-1·cm-2 and low detection limit of 1.67 µM. Moreover, the smartphone-based glucose sensing device also presents favorable feasibility in determination of glucose in serum samples with the recoveries ranging between 99.5 and 105.8%. The results may provide a promising viewpoint to design other new portable glucose sensors.
Bridge hangers, such as those in suspension and cable-stayed bridges, suffer from cumulative fatigue damage caused by dynamic loads (e.g., cyclic traffic and wind loads) in their service condition. Thus, the identification of damage to hangers is important in preserving the service life of the bridge structure. This study develops a new method for condition assessment of bridge hangers. The tension force of the bridge and the damages in the element level can be identified using the Bayesian optimization method. To improve the number of observed data, the additional mass method is combined the Bayesian optimization method. Numerical studies are presented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. The influence of different acquisition functions, which include expected improvement (EI), probability-of-improvement (PI), lower confidence bound (LCB), and expected improvement per second (EIPC), on the identification of damage to the bridge hanger is studied. Results show that the errors identified by the EI acquisition function are smaller than those identified by the other acquisition functions. The identification of the damage to the bridge hanger with various types of boundary conditions and different levels of measurement noise are also studied. Results show that both the severity of the damage and the tension force can be identified via the proposed method, thereby verifying the robustness of the proposed method. Compared to the genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and nonlinear least-square method (NLS), the Bayesian optimization (BO) performs best in identifying the structural damage and tension force.
