In this study, strain measurement and its applicability to estimated deflection curve using fiber bragg grating sensors was conducted. For this purpose, reinforced concrete beams were made and sensors were attached both on the surface of the beams and inside steel. Two types of sensors were used to detect strain on the beams and steel : fiber bragg grating sensors, electric resistance strain sensors. So fatigue test is done with measuring strain of specimen. In addition, this experiments estimates the optimum deflection curve that converts strain curve data measured by FBG sensors into deflection.
Welding residual stresses are the main topics of welding research fields. The residual stresses and distortion of structures by welding exert negative effect on the safety of mechanical structures. That is, expansion of material by high temperature and distortion by cooling during welding process are caused by tensile and compressive residual stresses in welding material, and this residual stresses can induce fracture and fatigue problems of welding structures. The accurate prediction of residual stress and relaxation due to mechanical loading of weld zone is very important to improve the quality of weldment. In this study, a finite element modeling technique is developed to simulate the relaxation of residual stresses due to mechanical loading. The effects of load ratio for static and cyclic loading are evaluated based on analytical results.
The possibility of weight reduction of rotor part in gas-gas geater(GGH) is studied from the viewpoint of allowable stress. In this work, finite element analysis(FEA) is performed with original model and three weight-reduced models with different diaphragm thickness, respectively. Stress concentrations at rotor diaphragm happen due to the dead weight, pressure difference between treated gas and untreated gas and thermal distribution in the rotor. As the thickness of diaphragm is decreased, the stress level is increased. The direction of treated gas and untreated gas flow may affect the stress level. Fatigue life assessment is not considered because pressure difference, the only cyclic load, can be ignored. The possible weight-reduced model is presented.
Direct nonlinear finite element analysis was carried out using nonlinear kinematic hardening model which was calibrated based on the experimentally determined material properties to obtain notch stress-strain state under cyclic load. By comparing numerical results and experimental data, conclusion was made on how well analysis results match physical phenomenon. Also, suggestion was made on what material curve should be used in conjunction with traditional Neuber/Glinka's rule to take into account the effect of material heterogeneity in its application to welded joint.
Fatigue crack propagation behavior for block load in high strength aluminum alloys was investigated in this study. The materials used in this study are aluminum alloy 5052-H32. Initial crack was made by applying cyclic load to a through crack with chevron notch. Crack length was measured from calibration curve, which was plotted by known crack length and resistance of standard specimens. Load was obtained from linear regression formula. Unloading elastic compliance method was applied to check the crack closure and cracked area. The present study results can be usefully applied to predicting the change of crack propagation rate, the crack closure, and the delay of crack propagation.
This paper presents experimental results of rock-concrete bi-material discs under cyclically diametrical compression. It was found that both specimens under cyclical and static loading failed in three typical modes: shear crack, tensile crack and a combined mode of shear and wing crack. The failure modes transited gradually from the shear crack to the tensile one by increasing the interface angle between the interface and the loading direction. The cycle number and peak load increased by increasing the interface angle. The number of cycles and peak load increased with the interface groove depth and groove width, however, decreased with increase in interface groove spacing. The concrete strength can contribute more to the cycle number and peak load for specimens with a higher interface angle. Compared with the discs under static loading, the cyclically loaded discs had a lower peak load but a larger deformation. Finally, the effects of interface angle, interface asperity and concrete strength on the fatigue strength were also discussed.
This paper proposes a numerically-based methodology to implicitly model irreversible deformations in concrete through a damage model. Plasticity theory is not explicitly employed, although resemblances are still present. A scalar isotropic damage model is adopted and the damage variable is split in two: one contributing for stiffness degradation (cracking) and other contributing for irreversible deformations (plasticity). The proposed methodology is thermodynamically consistent as it consists in a damage model rewritten in different terms. Its Finite Element coding is presented, indicating that minor changes are necessary. It is also demonstrated that nonlinear algorithms are unnecessary to model concrete cracking and plasticity. Experimental data from direct tension and four-point bending tests under cyclic loading are compared to the proposed methodology. A numerical case study of a low-cycle fatigue is also presented. It can be concluded that the model is simple, feasible and capable to capture the essentials concerning cracking and plasticity.
