Cybernetic Modeling of Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation for Ethanol Production from Steam-Exploded Wood with Brettanomyces custersii

  • The simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) process consists of concurrent enzymatic saccharification and fermentation. In the present cybernetic model, the saccharification process, which is based on the modified Michaelis-Menten kinetics and enzyme inhibition kinetics, was combined with the fermentation process, which is based on the Monod equation. The cybernetic modeling approach postulates that cells adapt to utilize the limited resources available to them in an optimal way. The cybernetic modeling was suitable for describing sequential growth on multiple substrates by Brettanomyces custersii, which is a glucose- and cellobiose-fermenting yeast. The proposed model was able to elucidate the SSF process in a systematic manner, and the performance was verified by previously published data.

  • This paper is to introduce cybernetic epistemology, which is one of the nonlinear or circular epistemology and have provided the basis for the development of various theories and models of family therapy. First, the history and the concept of the term cybernetics is briefly described, and then cybernetics is compared with general systems theory. following is the discussion of different levels of cybernetics, i.e., simple cybernetics and cybernetics of cybernetics, and of their major concepts, respectively. the ways in which cybernetic epistemology is applied to family therapy are also discussed in terms of diagnosis of problems, unit of therapy, goal of therapy, and role of family therapist. Finally, some implications for training and educating cybernetic family therapist are discussed.

Information Retrieval: A Communication Process in the 21st Century Library

  • Communication is a process involving a group of interrelated elements working together for the purpose of information transfer. This paper discusses information retrieval as a communication process in the 21st century library. The difficulties associated with access to recorded knowledge through bibliographic control devices have been exacerbated by the interposition of additional encoding processes in the library and further decoding by the users. In addition, the innovation of internet/web has revolutionized the means and mode of communication process in the library by flooding information seekers with information and creating an illusion of self-sufficiency in many users. With these changes in information seeking behaviour and pattern, a cybernetic approach to information retrieval has emerged emphasizing adaptive control mechanisms and feedback processes. This paper argues that libraries should strive to continuously remain relevant by keeping abreast with changes in the behavior of information users. To this end, this paper proposes apomediatic-cybernetic model of communication, which illustrates information retrieval processes for the 21st-century library.

  • 최근 공학분야의 조류는 세분화됨과 동시에 종합화되고 있다. 특히 Norbert Wiener가 1948년에 cybernetics라는 말을 사용한 이후 이것에 바탕을 가지는 학문 분야들의 많은 발전과 확대는 주목할만한 일다. 또한 많은 발전을 한 현대기술의 한계성을 탈피하여 보다 효과적인 인공 system을 구성하기 위해 그의 기본적인 자료를 추구하는 학문의 필요성이 점차적으로 요구되고 있으며, 여기에 따라 새로이 형성된 한 분야가 biocybernetics라 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 본고에서는 cybernetics의 간단한 배경을 먼저 살펴봄으로서 그 정의를 명백히 하고, 특히 전기공학과 관련지워서 다루워지고 있는 biocybernetics분야의 일부인 biosystem에 대한것을 소개하므로서 오늘날 발전하고 있는 생체공학의 이해에 도움을 주고져 한다.

디지털환경 매체로서 패션에 나타난 사이버네틱스의 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Characteristics of Cybernetics Exhibited in Fashion as a Media of Digital Environment)

  • The goal of this research, contorted from the perspective of media aesthetics, is to uncover the ways how mechanical/cybersensual fashion products express aesthetic characteristics of cybernetics, by comparing them with digital products designed by an application of cybernetics. The other goal is to provide a cultural and design framework of cybernetics as d digital-environmental medium for fashion in which hightech and human sensibilities are fused. The results urged to explore two new contrasting perceptual possibilities for an understanding of digital technology application: negative and positive feedbacks. Cybernetic optimism, centered on technological dimensions, focuses on a concept of fashion that emphasize instrumental aspects-efficiency and convenience. In contrast, cybernetic pessimism focuses on digital fashion that expresses environmental destruction and the loss of human identity. A comparative analysis of the aesthetics of expression in digital fashion design and digital industrial products from a cybernetic perspective showed that in digital environment society, the combination of negative and positive feedbacks resulted in design products in which internal and external aspects of beauty complemented each other.

신기술의 경제성 평가를 위한 다세대 확산모형 연구 (Multi-Generation Diffusion Model for Economic Assessment of New Technology)

  • As cost invested in developing the specified technology is increasing, investors are paying more attention to cost to benefit analysis (CBA). One of the basic elements of CBA for new technological development is the diffusion pattern of demand of such technology. Many studies of technology evaluation have adopted a single generation model to simulate the diffusion pattern of demand. This approach, however, considers the diffusion of the new technology itself, not taking into account a newer generation that can replace the one just invented. In this paper, we show how a multi-generation technology diffusion model can be applied for more accurate CBA for information technology. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to find influential factors on the CBA of a Cybernetic Building System.

Merging the old with the new: a cybermedicine marriage for oncology interactions with traditional herbal therapies and complementary medicines

  • An oncology-specific database called OncoRx (http://bit.ly/cancerRx) was previously set up in cyberspace to aid clinicians in identifying interactions of anticancer drugs (ACDs) and chemotherapy regimens with traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs). Since then, users have requested the drug-CAM interactions (DCIs) of 5 specific CAMs (cranberry, melatonin, co-enzyme Q10, huachansu, reishi mushroom) to be updated in the database. Pharmacokinetic properties (metabolism, enzyme induction/inhibition, elimination), TCM properties and DCIs of each CAM were collated with 117 ACDs using 9 hardcopy compendia and online databases as resources. Additionally, individual ACDs and CAMs were used as keywords for PubMed searches in combination with the terms 'anticancer drugs', 'drug interactions', 'herb-drug/drug-herb interactions', 'pharmacokinetic interactions' and 'pharmacodynamic interactions'. DCI parameters consisted of interaction effects, evidence summaries, proposed management plans and alternative non-interacting CAMs, together with relevant citations and update dates of the DCIs. OncoRx is also used as a case to introduce the "Four Pharmaco-cybernetic Maxims" of quality, quantity, relationship and manner to developers of digital healthcare tools. Its role in Hayne's "5S" hierarchy of research evidence is also presented. OncoRx is meant to complement existing DCI resources for clinicians and alternative medicine practitioners as an additional drug information resource that provides evidence-based DCI information for ACD-CAM interactions.

전수면박탈이 시각변별력에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Total Sleep Deprivation on Visual Discrimination)

  • 목 적 : 본 연구는 37시간의 수면박탈이 정상인의 시각변별력에 미치는 영향을 Cybernetic Flicker Fusion Analyzer(FLIMK)를 사용하여 평가를 하고자 하였으며, 이런 수면박탈의 시각변별력에의 영향이 졸음, 피로, 불안 및 기분상태와 어떤 연관성이 있는지를 조사하였다. 방 법 : 26명의 대상(남:녀=20:6, $24.50{\pm}1.45$세)이 연구에 참여하였으며, 37시간 동안 감시하에서 수면박탈이 시행되었다. 이틀간의 실험기간 동안 아침, 저녁에 한 차례씩 총 4회에 걸쳐 FLIMK와 졸음, 피로, 불안, 기분상태에 대한 자가보고 척도를 시행하였다. 결 과 : FLIMK 검사결과, 융합주파수는 37시간의 수면 박탈에 의하여 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.05). 융합주파수에 이르는 검사회수(반응회수)도 수면박탈 후에 유의하게 증가하였다(p<0.05). 융합주파수의 감소는 졸음과 피로도의 증가와 상관관계를 보였으며(p<0.05), 반응회수는 불안, 피로 및 부정적 정서와 상관관계를 보였다(p<0.05). 결 론 : 본 연구는 37시간의 수면박탈이 시각변별력의 저하를 가져오는 것을 보여주었다. 향후 수면박탈이 시각변별력에 영향을 미치는 기전에 관한 연구가 필요하다고 하겠다.
