  • Abies holophylla Maxim. is a shade tolerant species that has potential to be used for continuous cover forestry system. Stand structure and natural regeneration of A. holophylla stands in Yong-In area located in the central part of Korea was investigated to estimate the self sustainability of A. holophylla plantation. Species composition, diameter at breast height (DBH) and height distribution of trees larger than 2 cm DBH were measured in ten stands in three study sites of Jeongsu-ri, Daedae-ri, and Hodong. Species and coverage of shrub layer, and A. holophylla seedlings were also investigated. While A. holophylla in non-managed stands (Jengsuri and Daedae-ri study sites) had the importance value of 40% and showed continuous diameter and age distribution, A. holophylla in Hodong site had narrow bell-shaped DBH distribution mostly concentrating between 25-35 cm DBH classes, and single canopy structure. Abies holophylla stands in Hodong have experienced occasional thinning and selective cutting. The correlation coefficient between age-DBH was significant but low ($R^2$=0.2, P=0.03), and similar aged A. holophylla had diverse DBH values. Continuos DBH distribution and multi-canopy structure of A. holophylla stands in Jeongsu-ri site show that natural regeneration of A. holophylla has been continuously occurred in this area. Seedling density of A. holophylla was between 2000 and 33000/ha, however, the number of trees in 2-5 cm DBH class was only 40-150 trees/ha, implying that the survival rate of seedlings is not high. Continuous natural regeneration and 0.6 cm/year of diameter growth rate of A. holophylla indicate that this area could be an appropriate habitat for this species, and A. holophylla plantation in this region seem to persist suggesting the possibility of managing the stands for continuous cover forestry system as well as selective harvesting practices.

  • The result of the study about the cultivation, the constituents, the sweetenity, and the development of preparations of Stevia and Hydrangea are as follows: 1. Hydrangea thrived at $200{\sim}1,400m$ above the sea-level, and the good ones were brought up at $600{\sim}1,200m$. 2. The good ones which belonged to the genera of Hydrangea were produced in the damp, dark and cold place. 3. The growth and cultivated yield of Stevia was not significantly influenced by the acidity of the soil. 4. The best season was May and June for propagation of Stevia by cutting method. 5. The growth rate of Stevia and Hydrangea was really good in the sandy fertile soil, but in the mucotic soil it was not suitable. 6. The extraction and separation of phyllodulcin by solvent had many difficulties, because it was very soluble in water, ethanol, ether, petroleum ether, acetone and benzene, etc. 7. The solubility of stevioside on the solvent was as follows: It was very soluble in water and methanol, slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, and insoluble in ether, petroleum ether and chloroform. 8. The alkaloid reaction by Mayer reagent in Hydrangea extract was positive. 9. The ashification rate of Stevia was 8.66% to 8.72% and that of Hydrangea 17.02% to 17.04%. 10. The tannin of Stevia leaf was 7.80% to 7.88% and its of Hydrangea decreased 9.46% to 6.08% by fermentation. 11. The percent rates in minimum concentration-occurring sweetness in sugar, glycyrrhiza methanol extract, Hydrangea water extract, Stevia leaf water extract, decoction of Stevia's leaf, decoction of Stevia's stem were as follows: 1.2, 0.1, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.01, 0.1, 0.6. and sweetenity ratios of those were 1, 12, 12, 6, 3, 64, 12, 2, 12. It was very meaningful to develop preparations of stevia as stevioside, micronized powder, water extract, methanol extract and compound teas and in Hydrangea, water extract, methanol extract, single tea, and compound teas were less meaningful. 13. The genera of Hydrangea which is natural species in Korea was positive in phyllodulcin-identification test, but it was not available to make the sweet tea because of having a little content.

  • Pt is still considered as one of the most active electrocatalysts for ORR in alkaline fuel cells. However, the high cost and scarcity of Pt hamper the widespread commercialization of fuel cells. As a strong candidate for the replacement of Pt catalyst, silver (Ag) has been extensively studied due to its high activity, abundance, and low cost. Ag is more stable than Pt in the pH range of 8~14 as the equilibrium potential of Ag/Ag+ being ${\approx}200mV$ higher than that of Pt/PtO. However, Ag is the overall catalytic activity of Ag for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) is still not comparable to Pt catalyst since the surface Ag atoms are approximately 10 times less active than Pt atoms. Therefore, further enhancement in the ORR activity of Ag catalysts is necessary to be competitive with current cutting-edge Pt-based catalysts. We demonstrate the architectural design of Ag catalysts, synthesized using plasma discharge in liquid phase, for enhanced ORR kinetics in alkaline media. An attractive feature of this work is that the plasma status controlled via electric-field could form the Ag nanowires or dendrites without any chemical agents. The plasma reactor was made of a Teflon vessel with an inner diameter of 80 mm and a height of 80 mm, where a pair of tungsten(W) electrodes with a diameter of 2 mm was placed horizontally. The stock solutions were made by dissolving the 5-mM AgNO3 in DI water. For the synthesis of Agnanowires, the electricfield of 3.6kVcm-1 in a 200-ml AgNO3 aqueous solution was applied across the electrodes using a bipolar pulsed power supply(Kurita, Seisakusyo Co. Ltd). The repetition rate and pulse width were fixed at 30kHz and 2.0 us, respectively. The plasma discharge was carried out for a fixed reaction time of 60 min. In case of Ag nanodendrites, the electric field of 32kVcm-1 in a 200-ml AgNO3 aqueous solution was applied and other conditions were identical to the plasma discharge in water in terms of electrode configuration, repetition rate and discharge time. Using SEM and STEM, morphology of Ag nanowires and dendrites were investigated. With 3.6 kV/cm, Ag nanowire was obtained, while Ag dendrite was constructed with 32 kV/cm. The average diameter and legth of Ag nanowireses were 50 nm and 3.5 um, and thoes values of Ag dendrites were 40 nm and 3.0 um. As a results of XPS analysis, the surface defects in the Ag nanowires facilitated O2 incorporation into the surface region via the interaction between the oxygen and the electron cloud of the adjacent Ag atoms. The catalytic activity of Ag for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) showed that the catalytic ORR activity of Ag nanowires are much better than Ag nanodendrites, and electron transfer number of Ag nanowires is similar to that of Pt (${\approx}4$).

  • Some additives were applied to improve Yukwa(Popped rice snack) quality and process modifications were tested for cutting down soaking time and application of rice flour. Addition of soaked soybean (3%, w/w) to dough showed higher expansion rate and better physical properties with more acceptable quality by sensory evaluation of Yukwa. Baking powder, modified starch and alcoholic liquor, Mackeali(rice wine, turbid). Soju(distilled liquor) and Yakju(rice wine, clear), were no positive effect on quality of Yukwa but alcoholic liquor gave more fine texture than others. High temprature soaking $(60^{\circ}C)$ of rice for 3 hours which is near gelatinization temperature of rice starch. gave same quality of Yukwa comparing with long time soaking (12 hours) at room temperature. Extention of high temperature soaking (12 hours) did not improve the quality of Yukwa. The 100 mesh of rice flour by dry milling method was better in expansion rate and hardness than 40 and 80mesh but it was worse than ordinary wet milling. It was notified that milling method and milling mechines for Yukwa preparation should be studied in more detail.

  • The construction industry has the highest death rate related to safety accidents of any industry. Furthermore, in contrast to other industries, where the death rate related to safety accidents has been steadily declining, both the death toll and the number of accidents in the construction industry have been on the rise. Construction accidents occur when various risks increase in an intertwined way to reach a tipping point; a moment when such factors cannot be tolerated any longer Conventional safety management methods have restrictions in terms of their ability to fully prevent all types of safety accidents. This research considers ways in which USN technology can be applied to safety management on a construction site, and derives a method of applying USN technology for safety management monitoring. The tasks related to safety management on construction sites, as well as the occurrence of accidents, are first analyzed. By analyzing the characteristics of construction accidents, the factors that must be a priority and the factors that can be a lower priority are derived. Finally, the configuration of a monitoring system for safety management on a construction site to which USN technology is applied is presented. It is expected that safety accidents can be prevented from occurring on construction sites by applying this cutting-edge USN technology.

  • This study was conducted to develop the suitable plant mat for garden mum. The results about growth 2 months after cutting of garden mum (Dendranthema grandiflorum 'White Miri') under 6 different plant-mat treatments using coir tape were as follows. The majorities of cuttings were withered under treatments of non-soiled 15 mm thick mat (C treatment). On the other hand, the same thick mat having a hole filled with soil 3 mm in diameter (D treatment) and the 30 mm thick mat having a hole filled with soil (F treatment) showed the best growth results. The survival rates of treatments D and F showed the higher rates of 100 and 90%, respectively than those of respective 56.3 and 20% of two layers without medium (A treatments) and C treatment having respective 10 and 15 mm thick non-soiled mats. The plant height showing the similar tendency with the result of the survival rate was shown with the lower value of 7.97 and 7.15 cm, respectively under treatments A and C, compared with the higher value of 9.74 and 9.80 cm respectively under treatments D and F. For flower gardening, it is better to adopt treatment D based on the our investigational results that treatment D required less soil than treatment F and had no trouble with forming adventitious roots for manufacturing mats and effective transferring.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the ablation rate of Er: YAG laser irradiation on dentin and enamel and to observe the microscopic structures of cavities formed after ablation of enamel and dentin in using a bur and cavities formed after ablation using laser. Er:YAG laser irradiated at 200 mJ, 250mJ, 300mJ at the frequency of 20Hz, 15Hz. The following results were obtained : 1. The ablation rate of dentin groups at power of 3 W-6 W was about $1.103{\sim}2.639mm^3/sec$ and there were no significant differences between power of 4.5 W$\sim$6 W. 2. The ablation rate of enamel groups at power of 3 W-6 W was about $0.413{\sim}0.969mm^3/sec$ and there were no significant differences between power of 4 W$\sim$6 W. 3. With SEM examination of the cavity surface treated with the conventional high speed bur revealed relatively flat appearance almost covered with a debris like smear layer. 4. With SEM examination of the lased surface of dentin groups revealed no smear layer and no debris and openings of dentinal tubules were clearly opened. But the lased surfaces of the groups over 3 W were irregular and particles were loosely attached on it. 5. With SEM examination of the lased surface of enamel groups revealed severely destructed surface at the 6 W group and melting drop materials at the 3 W group. But the lased surface of 4 W group revealed clearly ablated surface. Therefore when cutting teeth using Er:YAG laser, the lasing power which can make effective ablation rate and minimize the thermal effect could be 3W at dentin and 4W at enamel. But, further studies and additional data collection will be necessary for appropriate lasing condition of Er:YAG laser.

  • In an attempt to develop an efficient method for the propagation of mature Prunus yedoensis (45 to 55 years old), green wood cuttings from normal branch and sprouts branch were treated with three different kinds of auxin (Rootone < 1-naphthylacetamide 0.4% >, IBA 100 ppm, and control and two different kinds of fog systems (0.9 L/min. and 0.54 L/min.). The Rootone treatment showed higher values in the percentage of rootings (PR) and the mean number of roots per cutting (NR) than the IBA treatment in the early stage. However, in the late stage, the values of PR and NR in the Rootone treatment become lower than those in the IBA 100 ppm treatment. On the other hand, root development ceased 62 days after taking cuttings for all of the treatments. The IBA 100 ppm treatment showed the best performance in root development (PR= 89.5%, NR = 6.5, LR=6.4 cm). The values of PR (76.5%) and NR (6.4) in the 0.9 L/min. of fog treatment was higher than those (PR = 71.7% and NR = 5.4) in the 0.54 L/min. of fog treatment. The cuttings from sprouts (PR: 74.8%, NR: 5.9, LR: 5.7 cm) showed slightly better performance in rooting rate that the cuttings from shoots (PR : 73.3%, NR: 5.9, LR: 5.4 cm). Statistically significant interactions were presented among most of the different combinations of three factors (auxin treatments, fog treatments, and types of cuttings). The PR showed the highest value of 98.0% in the combination of cuttings of shoots+IBA 100 ppm+0.54 L/min. fog treatments. In case of NR, the cuttings from normal branch showed a higher value than the cuttings from sprouts branch under the fog treatment of 0.9 L/min., while this tendency was reversed under the fog treatment of 0.54 L/min.. The perigon development of roots, which reflects the number and the direction of roots, was best in the IBA treatment (85.6%).
