  • As the technique of high-speed end-milling is widely adopted to machining field. The investigation for microscopic precision of workpiece is necessary for machinability evolution. The environmental pollution has become a big problem in industry and many researcher have investigated in order to preserve the environment. The environmentally conscious machining and technology have more important position in machining process. In the milling process, the cutting fluid has greatly bad influence on the environment. The damaged layer affect mold life and machine parts in machining. In this study, the cutting force, the surface roughness, micro hardness and residual stress is evaluated according to machining environment. Finally, it is obtained that the characteristics of damaged layer in environmentally conscious machining is better than that in conventional machining using cutting fluid.

  • Recently, a high speed cutting is essential requirement to satisfy latest demand of high precision product and machining of hard materials. However heat generation by high speed rotation causes many problems. The machining error and shortening spindle lifetime by thermal stress is typical example. Generation of heat is mostly caused by sliding at the rotor and bearing. For minimization of heat generation at bearing, decision of the condition of proper lubrication is necessary. The thermal study about 40,000rpm spindle by changing the condition of oil-air lubrication method is carried out in this paper. The results of this paper can be used effectively in the decision of oil-air lubrication condition of other types of spindle for machine tools.

  • Separation of soluble oil was investigated during filtration of cutting oil emulsion using various commercial ultrafiltration membranes. The surface properties of membranes used were hydrophilic hydrophobic and modified surfaces by various surfactant pretreatments. Conditions varied include stirring speed transmeembrane pressure membrane type and surfactant type for pretreatment. The results give some indication of mechanisms occurring at the membrane surface. Surfactant pretreatments significantly improved water flux and UF flux of hydrophilic regenerated cellulose(up to 2.4x for YM100) and hydrophobic polysulfone (up to 2.2x for PTHK) membranes depending on surfactant type and operating conditions. The UF flux enhancement was attributed to membrane swelling and reduction of interfacial surface tension between oil droplets and membrane surface. unexpectedly the hydrophilic membranes revealed greater flux enhancement than the hydrophobic membranes. The results also showed a greater improvement in UF flux at lower operating pressure.

  • This paper describes a development of Collision/grounding Strength Assessment System (COSAS) using simplified method. This method is formulated in closed-form equation by taking into account crushing caused by bulbous bow collision and cutting caused by forward speed grounding. To verify the accuracy of the developed system, some examples for test models of double side/bottom structure in collision/grounding situation are considered. This system might be useful for analysis of structural damage of oil tankers in collision/grounding.

  • Recently a high speed spindle system for machine tools has attracted considerable attention to reduce the machining time, to improve the machining accuracy, to perform the machining of light metals and hard materials and to unite the cutting and grinding processes. In this study, a high speed spindle system is developed by applying the oil-air lubrication method, angular contact ball bearings, injection nozzles with dual orifices and so on. And a lubrication experiment for evaluating the performance of the spindle system is carried out. Especially, in order to establish the lubrication conditions related to the development of a high speed spindle system, the effects of oil supply rate, rotational spindle speed and so on are studied and discussed on the bearing temperature rise, bearing temperature distribution and frictional torque. And the effect of spindle system structure on the bearing temperature distribution is investigated.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the flower organ removal effect on Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz which was introduced from China. The results were summarized as follows; The plant height of Flower Organ Cutting(F.O.N.C.) treatment short by 1.7∼2.5 cm compared to Flower Organ Non-Cutting(F.O.N.C.) treatment. But number of stem and stem diameter of F.0.C treatment were similar to that of F.O.N.C. treatment. The fresh weight of above-ground part of F.O.N.C. treatment was decreased 48∼60% compare to F.O.C. treatments. The later was period of F.O.C., the higher was fresh weight of above-ground part. The growth of underground part was more F.O.C. at July 15 and Aug. 20 treatments than F.O.N.D treatment. The dry rhizome yield of F.O.C. at July 15 treatment was increased 40% compare to F.O.N.D treatment. Essential oil content of F.O.C. at July 15 treatment was increased 12% compare to F.O.N.D treatment.

  • Cutting oil cools the chip and a tool as well as lubricates the chip-tool interface, the flank and machined surface. Rehbinder effect has been known as a phenomenon, the reduction of mechanical strength, when the metal is exposed to a polar organic environment or the surface of metal is coated with some polar organic substances. About the cause of Rehbinder effect there have been many different ideas by Rehbinder, Shaw, Barlow, Sakida and etc. In this report, the efect of polar organic substance( $C_{6}$ $H_{5}$C $H_{3}$+ $C_{6}$ $H_{4}$(C $H_{3}$)$_{2}$+ $C_{4}$ $H_{9}$OH+ $C_{6}$ $H_{12}$ $O_{2}$) (magic ink) upon the mechanism of chip formation on the orthogonal cutting of copper and mechanical properties of the work material are experimentally discussed with various rake angles. As expected no lubrication action could be noticed, but the shear angle increased and the cutting force and shear strain on the shear plane decreased, therefore the work material must be embrittled under polar organic substance.substance.

  • In a conventional magnetic abrasive polishing process, the polishing abrasives are mixed with ferrous particles and slight cutting oil to form a cluster of abrasives. However, when a tool rotates at a high revolution speed, most of the polishing abrasives are scattered away from it due to the increase in centrifugal force. This phenomenon directly reduces the polishing efficiency. The use of a highly viscous matter such as silicone gel instead of cutting oil for mixing is one method to solve this problem and increase abrasive adhesion. Another method to avoid high abrasive scattering is the application of wet magnetic abrasive polishing (WMAP). In WMAP, abundant mineral oil is preliminarily applied to the workpiece surface. This study experimentally evaluated the effect of WMAP on abrasive adhesion. The relationship between the amount of working abrasives and polishing conditions was characterized. Despite the lower adhesion ratio of polishing abrasives, the surface roughness was found to be significantly improved as the result of WMAP.

  • Background: This research investigates the degrees of slipperiness felt by the participants who walk on contaminants applied to a floor surface to decide degrees of slipperiness for various contaminants. Methods: For the experiment, 30 participants walked on a floor to which six contaminants were applied. All participants took the analytic hierarchy process (AHP)-based slipperiness questionnaire survey for the six kinds of contaminants, and the results were compared with the coefficient of friction. Results: The results of slip risk from the AHP indicate that grease is the most slippery of the six contaminants, followed by diesel engine oil, hydraulic oil, cooking oil, water-soluble cutting oil, and water in a decreasing order of slipperiness. When the results of slip risk from the AHP are compared with the static coefficient of friction for each contaminant, the order of slip risk follows the same trend. Although the results of slip risk from the AHP coincide with the static coefficient of friction, further study would be needed to investigate this relationship. Conclusion: This study will contribute as reference material for future research on preventing industrial accidents that result in falls from high places due to slipping.

  • The present study was developed in order to evaluate the effect of five essential oils on the workers of the leaf-cutting ants; Atta sexdens rubropilosa and Acromyrmex subterraneus molestans by contact with a treated surface and ingestion with a treated leaves.. The essential oils of cinnamon, clove and mustard had generally more effective with 5, 10 and 15% concentrations after 24, 48, 72 and 96 h against workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa and A. subterraneus molestans in contact bioassay, but mustard was the most effective in ingestion bioassay on both species. On the other hand, there was no significant difference among the essential oils with 1% concentration and control after 24, 48 and 72 h of treatment in contact and ingestion bioassays against workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa . However, Andiroba oil had less efficiency values in all concentrations been used. Therefore, the essential oils of mustard, cinnamon and clove have contact and ingestion effects on workers of A. sexdens rubropilosa and A. subterraneus molestans, and may be promising on the leaf-cutting ant control.
