  • This paper presents the characteristics of cutting fluid atomization due to its application method. In this study three different application methods; nozzle, jet, mist type is adopted for evaluating the cutting fluid's effect in terms of machinability and environmental consciousness. Cutting fluids are widely used to cool and lubricate the cutting zone in machining process. Cutting fluids mist via atomization in spin-off process can be affected to health risk. To satisfy the increasing concern of health and environment problem and keep the machinability or productivity it is necessary to establish the resonable strategy of cutting fluid usage and optimal control. Tool wear and cutting fluid diffusion rate in the air were measured as machinability index and environmental index in a few turing operation. Through this basic approach it can be also provide the optimization of cutting process and improvement of machine tool design in achieving environmentally conscious machining.

  • As environmental restriction kas continuously become more strict, machining technology has emphasized on development of environment-friendly technology. In cutting technology, it has been well recognized that cutting fluids might have undesirable effects on workers health and working environment. In this study, compressed cold air was used as a replacement for conventional cutting fluids. The cooling effect on cutting tool was analyzed using the finite element method and the computational fluid dynamics. This study focused on the temperature simulation of cutting tool by real flow analysis of cold air. The maximum flow rate and the minimum temperature of compressed cold air are 300ι/min and -30$^{\circ}C$ respectively. To compare the simulation and experimental results, inner temperature of the cutting tool was measured with the thermocouple embedded in the insert. The results show that the analysis of cutting temperature using FEM and CFD is resonable, and the replacement of cutting fluid with cold air is available.

  • Synthetic water-based metal-cutting fluids are increasingly popular in the metal-working industry because of its environmental friendliness. The propose of this study is to investigate the synergistic effect of combining polyethylene glycol and common fatty acid in formulating a metal-cutting fluid. The tested metals were aluminum, copper and steel, and the test was performed with a modified drilling machine. From the study, it was found that there existed some synergistic effects on the drilling efficiency of the metals to decrease of cutting time, cutting energy, torque as well as the smoothness of surface depended on the formulation ratio of the two fluids.

  • This paper presents the experimental results on the cutting performance and wear characteristics of CBN ball end-mill. The influence of cutting fluids and rake angles on the tool performance is reported. It i found that the neat cutting oil is beneficial to obtain good surface roughness and 30 .deg. of rake angle gives the minimum tool wear. The microscopic investigations reveal that the coated carbide endmills wear by fracture whereas the CBN endimills wear by attritious mode.

  • The purposes of using cutting fluid during cutting have been cooling, lubricating, chip washing and anti-corroding. However, the present manufacturing industry restricts the use of cutting fluid because cutting fluid contains poisonous substances which are harmful to the human body. Therefore environmentally conscious machining and technology have more important position in machining process because cutting fluids have significant influence on the environment in milling process. In this study, environmentally conscious machining can be obtained by the way of selecting the optimum machinig conditon using the design of experiment. Cutting using oil-mist showed better cutting characteristics than dry, air and fluid cutting with respect to by cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness. Also, the optimum machining condition for cutting using oil-mist could be selected through Taguchi method.

  • Synthetic water-based metal-cutting fluids are increasingly popular in the metal-working industry because of its environmental friendliness. However, the fluids have the problem to be decomposed by microbes with use. Thus, it is very important to evaluate the stabilities of the fluids against microbes for the excellent fluids. The purpose of this study is to investigate the biodegradability of several lubricating agents used to improve anti-wear property of the fluids. From the study, it was found that there existed some difference on the biodegradability against microbes such as Escherichia coli and Klepsiella pneumoniae depended on the structure of the lubricating agents and pH of the fluids.

  • A hybrid cutting using both plasma and end mill was developed for safe and efficient dismantling of nuclear facilities. In this cutting method, a moving arc plasma heats up the workpiece before milling. Thermally softened part of the workpiece is then removed quickly and deeply with an end mill. For the cutting experiments, a three-axis numerical control (NC) milling machine was combined with a commercialized arc plasma torch and used to cut 25 mm thick stainless steel plates. Experimental results revealed that pre-heating by arc plasmas can improve the cutting volume per unit time higher than 40% by reducing the cutting load and increasing the cuttable depth when using an end mill without cutting fluids. These advantages of a hybrid cutting process are expected to contribute to quick and safe segmentations of metal structures with radioactively contaminated inner surfaces.

  • This paper presents the experimental results to verify the environmental consciousness with economic balances due to cutting fluid behaviors and effectiveness in machining process. The cutting fluid improves the productivity through cooling, lubricating effects, however its environmental impact also increases according to the cutting fluid usage. The primary mechanism in this study is the spin-of motion of cutting fluids away from the rotating workpiece. In this study some machining parameters are adopted to analyze the productivity as well as environmental impact. This study provides the criteria for the resonable cutting fluid usage quantitatively to develop the environmentally conscious machining process.

  • This paper presents the analytical and experimental methodology for the prediction of aerosol concentration and size distribution due to cutting fluid atomization mechanism in turnining operation. The established analytical model which is based on atomization theory analyzes the cutting fluid motion and aerosol generation in machining process. The impinging and evaporation experiments were performed to know the particle size and evaporation rate of cutting fluid. The predictive models can be used as a basis for environmental impact analysis on the shop floor. It can be also facilitate the optimization of cutting fluid usage in achieving a balanced consideration of productivity and environmental consciousness.
