  • The incidence of cardiovascular disease increases rapidly after 40's. The thickness of the epicardial adipose tissue was measured to analyze the risk factors affecting the thickness change. We present the cut off value for the epicardial adipose tissue thickness for high impacted variables. For the study, 547 patients underwent echocardiography, epicardial adipose tissue thickness, body mass index, abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness and diabetes mellitus were used as analytical variables. As a result, multiple regression analysis of age group showed that diabetes mellitus was highly influential in all age group, so we could predict the cut off value for the epicardial adipose tissue thickness for diabetes mellitus. As a result of ROC curve analysis, cut off value of 7.44 mm was obtained with sensitivity of 79.6% and specificity of 60.6% for diab etes variab le. Logistic regression analysis b ased on this value showed that the risk for diab etes increased 6 times with each increase in the thickness of the epicardial adipose tissue. Among the various obesity indexes, epicardial adipose tissue is used as an important index especially to prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, we suggest that the use of echocardiography as a routine screening method for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, which is rapidly increasing in patients over 40's age, will enable more effective monitoring. Radiation is the emission or transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through space or through a material medium.

  • Cut-off sampling that discards a part of the population from the sampling frame, is a widely used method for a business survey. Usually, to the estimate of population total, an accurate estimate of the total of the take-nothing stratum is required. Many estimators have been developed to estimate the total of the take-nothing stratum. Recently Kim and Shin (2011) suggested a composite estimator and showed the superiority of that estimator. In this paper, we suggest an alternative composite estimator obtained by combining BLUP estimator and a ratio estimator obtained by the small samples from the take-nothing stratum. Small simulation studies are performed for a comparison of the estimators and we confirm that the new suggested estimator is superior.

  • In case of underground construction affected by groundwater, CIP (Cast-In-Place Pile) method is generally used to resolve the geo-hydraulic problem. However, as this method has poor connectivity between piles, an auxiliary method for cut-off is needed in many cases. In this study, a new concept earth retaining wall method (H-CIP) with no auxiliary method, by using surfactant grout (Hi-FA) which improves antiwashout and infiltration ability, is introduced, and its field applicability is evaluated. CIP and H-CIP piles were installed with same ground conditions, and field and laboratory tests were conducted to verify the performance. As results, newly contrived H-CIP method shows higher field performance for cut-off and strength than conventional CIP method.

  • PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide the standard value of the Five Times Sit to Stand Test (FTSST) measurement on the daily life independence of the elderly in Korea and examine the effects of this test on their daily lives. METHODS: This study was conducted on elderly people over 65 years of age living in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea. FTSST was performed while sitting position on a chair. The subjects were classified into independent and dependent living groups according to their lifestyle, and their influence was then examined through logistic regression analysis. To determine the usefulness and cut-off value of the FTSST, the analysis was performed using the ROC curve. RESULTS: The elderly were more likely to live in a group rather than independently as the FTSST time increased (p<.05) (OR=1.098). The area of the lower part of the ROC curve was .707, and as the FTSST increased, a subject was more likely to live in a group rather than independently (p<.05). The cut-off value was assigned to the point where both the specificity and sensitivity were at the coordinates. The sensitivity and specificity were .626 and .753, respectively at 15.62 seconds. CONCLUSION: The elderly in Korea are more likely to live a group-dependent lifestyle than live independently; the likelihood of this outcome is increased further for every additional second beyond 15.62 seconds. The loss of independence of daily life could be predicted based on the status of a subject's lower leg strength using the FTSST.

  • The impact of output conductance (go) on the short-circuit current-gain cut-off frequency (fT) in In0.8Ga0.2As high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) on an InP substrate was investigated. An attempted was made to extract the values of fT in a simplified small-signal model (SSM) of the HEMTs, derive an analytical formula for fT in terms of the extrinsic model parameters of the simplified SSM, which are related to the intrinsic model parameters of a general SSM, and verify its validity for devices with Lg from 260 to 25 nm. In long-channel devices, the effect of the intrinsic output conductance (goi) on fT was negligible. This was because, from the simplified SSM perspective, three model parameters, such as gm_ext, Cgs_ext and Cgd_ext, were weakly dependent on goi. However, in short-channel devices, goi was found to play a significant role in degrading fT as Lg was scaled down. The increase in goi in short-channel devices caused a considerable reduction in gm_ext and an overall increase in the total extrinsic gate capacitance, yielding a decrease in fT with goi. Finally, the results were used to infer how fT is influenced by goi in HEMTs, emphasizing that improving electrostatic integrity is also critical importance to benefit fully from scaling down Lg.

  • The removal characteristics of cadmium in micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) were investigated by using an anionic biosurfactant, deoxycholic acid (DCA). The ultrafiltration experiments were performed in a batch-type stirred cell. The ultrafiltration membranes used were Millipore YM1, YM3, YM10, and YM30 which had a difference in molecular weight cut-off. The presence of cadmium ion in DCA solution tends to reduce the critical micell concentration considerably and increase the micell size. The molecular weight cut-off of ultrafiltration membrane had a minimal effect on cadmium removal whereas DCA/Cd ratio had a substantial influence. When DCA/Cd ratio was 3, the removal efficiency of cadmium was more than 99.6%. A relative flux, which is defined as ratio of the flux for a separation trial to that of deionized water run using the same piece of membrane, decreased in the order of YM3 > YM1 > YM10 > YM30.

  • Background: The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Fullerton Advanced Balance (FAB) scale have been used to assess balance function in patients with chronic stroke. These clinical balance scales provide information about potential risk factors for falls. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of and risk factors of falls and compare the predictive values of the BBS and FAB scale relative to fall risk in patients with stroke through receiver operating characteristic analysis. Methods: Sixty-three patients with stroke (faller=34, non-faller=29) who could walk independently for 10 meters participated in this study. The BBS and FAB scale were administered. Then, we verified the cut-off score, sensitivity, specificity, and the area of under the curve. Results: In this study, the BBS and FAB scale did not predict fall risk in patients with stroke in the receiver operator characteristic curve analysis. A cut-off score of 37.5 points provided sensitivity of .47 and specificity of .35 on the BBS, and a cut-off score of 20.5 points provided sensitivity of .44 and specificity of .45 on the FAB scale. Conclusion: The BBS and FAB scale were not useful screening tools for predicting fall risk in patients with stroke in this study, but those who scored 37.5 or lower on the BBS and 20.5 or lower on the FAB scale had a high risk for falls.

  • This study aims to figure out the old people's needs for modification of their housing to maintain an independent lifestyle despite their health status and living arrangements. The total of 438 residents take part in the questionnaire survey research through the quota sampling method grouped by age (60-64 group, 65-69 group, 70-74 group, and over 75 group), sex (male and female), and house type (apartment houses and others). The results are as follows. (1) The old people's most inspired modification needs in interior spaces are remodeling the heating controls in the living room and the bedroom, ventilation facilities and storage spaces in the kitchen, non-slip tile flooring and ventilation facilities in bathroom, an easy door-lock, non-slip tile flooring, a draft cut-off, and storage spaces in the entrance. Besides they require emergency alarm, easy door and window locks, fire and gas alarm, and furniture with easy handling. It is necessary to supply the aged with the appropriate heating controls for their sensitivity to heat, with enough storage spaces for the increased possessions, and with diverse safety systems reflected blunting of mobility and sensibility. (2) As they grow older, the aged require more remote controls and safety facilities such as emergency alarm, easy locks and furniture with distinguishable colors. Male elderly is more concerned with safety, while female elderly do with convenience due to their different time spending in the house. The elderly residents in the apartment houses require the heating controls, a draft cut-off, and storage space less than other types of houses. Thus modification of the heating controls, a draft cut-off, and storage space are regards as basic needs for the elderly residents in non-apartment houses.

  • Among the various building envelope elements, the glass area takes up the largest portion in the office building design. However, a large area of glass can cause problems such as excessive solar radiation, thermal comfort, and glare. Thus it is important to install the glass area to an appropriate level, and control solar radiation and inflow of daylight with blind devices. This study aims to improve the visual performance of the work plane through the automatic control of the venetian blinds. A total of eight kinds of control strategies were chosen; Case 1 does not control the blinds, Case 2 with the blind slats fixed at the angle of 0 degree, Case 3 to 6 using the existing blind control programs, and Case 7 and 8 with improved blind control. Case 3 with 90 degrees had the best energy performance, but the average indoor illuminance was 113lux, which is below the standards. Cases 4 and 5 showed higher levels of interior daylight illuminance with the average of 281lux and 403lux respectively. However, the fixed angles may have difficulties controlling excessive direct sunlight coming into the room and may cause glare. Cases 6 and 7 used sun tracking angle control and cut-off angle control, and the average interior illuminance was measured 250lux and 385lux respectively. Case 8 used the cut-off angle control in an hourly manner, satisfying the standard illuminance of 400lux with an average interior illuminance of 561lux. It was evaluated to be the best method to control direct solar radiation and to guarantee proper level of interior illumination.

  • Thrust cut off(TCO) system is installed at the port of a rocket motor case forward dome. The snap ring and the closure are escaped sequentially by pulling out a wedge under internal pressure. The hydraulic structural tests of TCO and numerical simulations were performed, and both results were compared to understand the deformation behavior of TCO. By increasing splines symmetrically, the sealing capacity of TCO can be improved significantly. The escape pressure of TCO increases according to the increase of friction coefficient and there is a critical friction coefficient beyond which the snap ring can not be nearly escaped even after forced escape of wedge. Under low friction coefficient the snap ring is contracted to radial direction and easily escaped. But, under high friction coefficient, the snap ring can not be escaped from the port even after severe plastic deformation.
