  • The curved structures in space, such as multi-level inter-changes, ramped structures, and circular curved structures etc., are modelled as helically curved members with constant helix angle in this study. Equilibrium equations are derived, considering the geometrical properties and initial curvatures of helix. Modal equations of the simply supported helically curved members which can calculate the normalized natural frequencies are derived from these equations by assuming the modal shape function. These equations are used to calculate the normalized natural frequencies of the simply supported helically curved members and verify the distribution of the natural frequencies of them.

  • This paper starts with an approach to Korean traditional building design using BIM tool as a design methodology where Korean traditional buildings show some difference rather as weaknesses in handling curves and curved members and the construction. BIM design tools, that are adequate in treating modern architectural design vocabularies, show some disadvantages not having necessary elements and components as building libraries. In this paper we build our own libraries adequate to the proper assembling way of Korean traditional buildings. In contrast to the diverse use of straight building members, Korean traditional buildings show rare use of curves and/or curved members in their assemblage. Moreover, in the case of a circular plan, mostly a circle is interpreted in terms of polygons such as square, hexagon or octagon. In this paper, we examine Gwanram-Jung in Changduk Palace, which is probably the only example in Korea showing a use of curves and/or curved members in assemblage. We try to interpret the case as an incomplete prototype and apply in a modern way to complete a circular plan in terms of circular arcade.

  • The curved structures in space, such as multi-level interchanges, ramped structures, and circular curved structures can be modelled as helically curved members with constant helix angle. This paper presents a finite element approach for the analysis of the static and the free vibration characteristics of the helically curved members by using the 7th order Hermite interpolation functions. This method is used to find more accurate solution of the static and dynamic responses of them than those of the previous studies.

  • Nowadays, one of the practical, fast and easy ways to strengthen steel elements is the use of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). Most previous research in the CFRP strengthening of steel members has carried out on straight steel members. The main difference between horizontal curved beams and straight beams under vertical load is the presence of torsional moment in the horizontal curved beams. In the other words, the horizontal curved beams are analyzed and designed for simultaneous internal forces included bending moment, torsional moment, and shear force. The horizontal curved steel beams are usually used in buildings, bridges, trusses, and others. This study explored the effect of the CFRP strengthening on the behavior of the horizontal curved square hollow section (SHS) steel beams. Four specimens were analyzed, one non-strengthened curved steel beam as a control column and three horizontal curved steel beams strengthened using CFRP sheets (under concentrated load and uniform distributed load). To analyze the horizontal curved steel beams, three dimensional (3D) modeling and nonlinear static analysis methods using ANSYS software were applied. The results indicated that application of CFRP sheets in some specific locations of the horizontal curved steel beams could increase the ultimate capacity of these beams, significantly. Also, the results indicated when the horizontal curved steel beams were under distributed load, the increase rate in the ultimate capacity was more than in the case when these beams were under concentrated load.

  • This paper deals with the free, in-plane vibrations of curved members with the translational(radial and tangential directions) and rotational springs at the ends. The governing differential equations for the circular curved member are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest three natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, the translational spring stiffness, and the rotational spring stiffness.

  • This paper deals with the free vibrations of horizontally curved members resting on elastic foundations with continuity effect. Taking into account the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation, differential equations governing the free vibrations of such beams are derived, in which the Pasternak foundation model is considered as the elastic foundation with continuity effect. The differential equations are solved numerically to calculate natural frequencies and mode shapes. The experiments were performed in which the natural frequencies of such curved beams in laboratorial scale were measured and these results agree quite well with the present numerical studies. In numerical examples, the circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and elliptic curved members with the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped end constraints are considered. The parametric studies are conducted and the lowest four frequency parameters are reported in tables and figures as the non-dimensional forms. Also the typical mode shapes are presented.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to Investigate the free vibrations of circular curved members resting on nonhomogeneous elastic foundations. The governing differential equations derived in a previous paper are used. The governing equations are solved numerically to obtain frequencies. Hinged-hinged end constraint is considered in numerical examples. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the foundation rested ratio, the foundation parameter, the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, and the width ratio of the contact area between the member and the foundation.

  • Curved bridges are composed of curved members which have certain curvatures, comparing to straight bridges. Therefore, their behavior is quite different from one of the straight bridges, mainly due to the geometric characteristics of the curved bridges. In this paper, the curved bridges consisted of the single box-girder span are investigated to study the effects of negative reaction forces. The parameters considered in this study are span lengths, angles of curvature, and the number of shoes. Midas/civil computer program was used for the analysis of the curved bridges. The analysis results show that negative reaction forces are not created with one shoe installed. When two shoes are provided, on the other hands, the uplift forces are developed at the inside shoe. It is also concluded that the increasing ratio of negative reaction forces becomes larger, as the angles of curvature increase, and the elongation of span lengths turns out to increase the magnitudes of the uplift forces.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present an analytical method for free vibration of stepped horizontally curved members on two-parameter elastic foundation. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams are derived as non-dimensional forms including the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. The governing equations are solved numerically for the circular, parabolic, sinusoidal and elliptic curved beams with hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped end constraints. As the numerical results, the lowest four natural frequency parameters are presented as the functions of various non-dimensional system parameters. Also the typical mode shapes are presented.
