  • Voronoi diagrams for closed shapes have many practical applications, ranging from numerical control machining to mesh generation. Shape offset based on Voronoi diagram avoids the topological problems encountered in traditional offsetting algorithms. In this paper, we propose a procedure for generating a Voronoi diagram and an exact offset for planar curve. A planer curve can be defined by free-form curve segements. The procedure consists of three steps : 1) segmentation by minimum curvature, 2) construction of Voronoi diagram, and 2) generation of the exact offset.

  • Primary function of a transition curve is to accomplish gradual transition from the straight to circular curve, so that curvature changes from zero to a finite value. The transition curve enhances the running safety and ride comfort of the vehicle in curve. There are a couple of transition curve such as clothoid, cubic parabola and cosinusoidal curve, etc. In this study, running behaviors of cubic parabola and cosinusoidal curve were investigated and compared by numerical analysis result using VAMPIRE program. Ride comforts for an individual transition curve were evaluated for each transition curve and running behavior and safety were also evaluated to compare the capacity of transition curves.

  • A biarc is a curve connecting two circular arcs with the constraints of tangent continuity so that it can represent the free form currie approximately connecting several biarcs with the tangent continuity. Since a biarc consists of circular arcs, the offset curve of the curve represented by biarcs can be easily obtained. Besides. if the tool path is represented by biarcs, the efficiency of machining is improved and the amount of data is decreased. When approximating a curve with biarcs, the location of the point where two circular arcs meet each other plays an important part in determining the shape of a biarc. In this thesis, the optimum point where two circular arcs meet is calculated using the tangent information of the curve to approximate so that it takes less calculation time to approximate due to the decrease of the number of iterations.

  • A numerical method is proposed to optimize automotive cam profiles. An acceleration curve of a cam follower motion is described by Hermite spline curves. Because of the intrinsic characteristics of the Hermite curve, it is possible to design an acceleration curve with arbitrary shape. Design variables in the optimization problem are location of control points which define the acceleration curve. Objective function includes dynamic performances as well as kinematic properties of a valve train. Similar optimization procedure was also performed using Polydyne cam profile synthesis method. Optimized profiles using the Hermite curve are proved to be superior to those using the Polydyne method.

  • Consider a two dimensional smooth convex body with a marked point on the boundary of it, sitting tangentially at the marked point over a base curve in 𝔼2, ℍ2 or 𝕊2 and the image of this body by the reflection with respect to the tangent line of the base curve at the marked point. When we roll these two bodies simultaneously along the base curve, the trajectories of the marked point bound a closed region. We show that the area of the closed region is independent of the shape of the base curve if the base curve is not highly curved with respect to the boundary curve of the convex body.

  • In order to describe runoff characteristics of urban drainage area, outflow from subbasins divided by considering topography and flow path, is analyzed through stormwater system. In doing so, concentration time and time-area curve change significantly according to basin shape, and runoff characteristics are changed greatly by these attributes. Therefore, in this development study of FFC2Q model by MLTM, we aim to improve the accuracy in analyzing runoff by adding a module that considers basin shape, giving it an advantage over popular urban hydrology models, such as SWMM and ILLUDAS, that can not account for geometric shape of a basin due to their assumptions of unit subbasin as having a simple rectangular form. For subbasin shapes, symmetry types (rectangular, ellipse, lozenge), divergent types (triangle, trapezoid), and convergent types (inverted triangle, inverted trapezoid) have been analyzed in application of time-area curve for surface runoff analysis. As a result, we found that runoff characteristic can be quite different depending on basin shape. For example, when Gunja basin was represented by lozenge shape, the best results for peak flow discharge and overall shape of runoff hydrograph were achieved in comparison to observed data. Additionally, in case of considering subbasin shape, the number of division of drainage basin did not affect peak flow magnitude and gave stable results close to observed data. However, in case of representing the shape of subbasins by traditional rectangular approximation, the division number had sensitive effects on the analysis results.

  • Background: Airway resistance(Raw) is measured with the body plethysmograph by displaying the relationship between airflow and alveolar pressure($V/P_A$). If the resistance curve on $V/P_A$ tracing is curved or looped, the estimation of Raw is difficult. This study was designed to examine wheather there is any correlation between the shape of resistance curve and the clinical status and the pulmonary function of patients. Methods: The 146 pulmonary disease patients with increased Raw were included in this study. The shapes of resistance curves on $V/P_A$ tracing with body plethysmograph during quiet breathing were analyzed and compared with pulmonary function. Results: The results were as follows ; 1) The shapes of resistance curves were summarized in 5 categories; type 1: linear, type 2: ovoid, type 3: sigmoid, type 4: scoop, type 5: paisley. The type 3 except 1 case, type 4 and type 5 were found to have loop mainly in expiratory phase. 2) Although the shapes of resistance curves were not typical for specific disease, the resistance curves of acute disease tended to belong to type 1 or 2 and those of chronic airflow obstruction tended to belong to type 3, 4 or 5. But resistance curves of bronchial asthma and destructive lung with tuberculosis showed all types in proportion to degree of airflow obstruction or destruction of parenchyme. 3) In the cases of resistance curves going to type 5 rather than type 1 and those with looping, airflow obstuction tended to be severe and airway resistance and residual volume tended to increase. Conclusions: Analysis of resistance curve on $V/P_A$ tracing measuring airway resistance is helpful for judging degree of airflow obstruction and air trapping. Although the shape of resistance curve is not typical for specific disease, there is a close association between looping and airway obstruction.

  • The YORP effect is non-gravitational force that changes the spin-status of asteroid. So far this effect has been directly detected only from the Near-Earth asteroids (Taylor et al. 2007; Lowry et al. 2007, 2014; Breiter et al. 2011; Durech et al. 2008, 2012). Pravec at el. 2008 found the evidences for changing spin rate of small asteroids (3 - 15 km) by the YORP effect in the Main-Belt and Mars-crossing asteroids. The Mars-crossing asteroids (1.3 < q < 1.66 AU) are objects that cross orbit of the Mars. The Mars-crossing asteroids are regarded as one of the main sources for the Near-Earth asteroids. We expect that rotation of Mars-crossing asteroids would be influenced by the YORP effect. We try to search observational evidence of the YORP effect for the Mars-crossing asteroid. Our target 2078 Nanking is a population of the Mars-crossing asteroid. First light-curve of 2078 Nanking was obtained from Mohamed et al. 1994, and Warner et al. 2015 recently published new observational data. We observed this asteroid on 26th Nov. 2014 and 17th Jan. 2015 using SOAO (Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory) 0.61 m telescope with 4K CCD. Using light-curve inversion method (Kaasalainen & Torppa 2001; Kaasalainen et al. 2001), we try to determine the pole orientation and shape model of this asteroid based on the combination of our light-curve and literature photometric data. Knowing spin parameters, such as rotational period and spin axis, are essential for studying the YORP effect. In this presentation, we provide some preliminary results of our recent study: light-curve and processing of shape modeling of 2078 Nanking. We plan to find observational clue for the YORP effect on the Mars-crossing asteroids.
