Determination of true stress-strain curve of type 304 and 316 stainless steels using a typical tensile test and finite element analysis

  • Knowing a material's true stress-strain curve is essential for performing a nonlinear finite element analysis to solve an elastoplastic problem. This study presents a simple methodology to determine the true stress-strain curve of type 304 and 316 austenitic stainless steels in the full range of strain from a typical tensile test. Before necking, the true stress and strain values are directly converted from engineering stress and strain data, respectively. After necking, a true stress-strain equation is determined by iteratively conducting finite element analysis using three pieces of information at the necking and the fracture points. The Hockett-Sherby equation is proposed as an optimal stress-strain model in a non-uniform deformation region. The application to the stainless steel under different temperatures and loading conditions verifies that the strain hardening behavior of the material is adequately described by the determined equation, and the estimated engineering stress-strain curves are in good agreement with those of experiments. The presented method is intrinsically simple to use and reduces iterations because it does not require much experimental effort and adopts the approach of determining the stress-strain equation instead of correcting the individual stress at each strain point.

Loss Analysis by Impeller Blade Angle in the S-Curve Region of Low Specific Speed Pump Turbine

  • A pump turbine is a technically matured option for energy production and storage systems. At the off-design operating range, the pump turbine succumbed to flow instabilities, which correlated with the pump turbine geometry. A low specific speed pump turbine was designed and modified according to the impeller blade angle. Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes is carried out with a shear stress transport turbulence model to evaluate the detailed flow characteristics in the pump turbine. The impeller blade inlet angle (𝛽1) and outlet angle (𝛽2) are used to evaluate hydraulic loss in the pump turbine. When 𝛽1 changed from low to high value, the maximum efficiency is increased by 4.75% in turbine mode. The S-Curve inclination is reduced by 8% and 42% for changes in 𝛽1 and 𝛽2 from low to high values, respectively. At α = 21°, the shock loss coefficient (𝜁s) is reduced by 16% and 19% with increases of 𝛽1 and 𝛽2 from low to high values, respectively. When 𝛽1 and 𝛽2 values increased from low to high, the impeller friction coefficient (𝜁f) increased and decreased by 20% and 8%, respectively. Hence, the high 𝛽2 effectively reduced the loss coefficient and S-Curve inclination.

한반도 서해안의 후기 홀로세 해수면 변동 곡선에 대한 검토 (Review on the Relative Sea-level Changes in the Yellow Sea during the Late Holocene)

  • 서해안에서 보고되고 있는 다수의 해수면 변동 곡선들은 모두 상대해수면(Relative sea-level) 변동곡선으로 사료된다. 서해안의 상대해수면 변동곡선들은 크게 1) 홀로세 해수면은 현 해수면보다 높은 적이 없었다는 학설과 2) 중기 홀로세에 해수면은 현재 해수면보다 수m 높았으며, 이 후 서서히 하강하면서 현해수면에 도달하였다는 학설로 대표된다. 전자는 절대해수면 곡선과 대비되는 반면, 후자는 빙하로부터 원거리에 위치하고 있는 대륙의 연안 역에서 나타나는 상대해수면곡선과 대비된다. 해수면 곡선 복원도에 활용된 자료들을 검토하여 보았을 때, 대부분 기 발표된 논문의 자료들을 인용하였으나, 그 인용에 있어 분석자료의 선택적 사용으로 서로 다른 결과들이 도출되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 후자의 자료들은 모두 군산이북지역으로부터 얻어진 것으로, 중기 홀로세 이후 서서히 하강하는 해수면 변동곡선이 군산 이북지역을 대표하고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 서해안 상대해수면 곡선은 빙하평형조절(GIA:Glacio isostatic adjustment)과 이에 수반된 중력 끌림(Gravitational attraction)에 의한 요인뿐만 아니라 그 이외의 지엽적으로 발생하는 지구조 운동 등에 의하여 변동될 수 있다. 그러므로, 서해안역의 상대해수면곡선 양상이 원거리 지역에서 나타나는 것과 대비 되지만, 서해안의 활발한 지진활동과 한반도에 분포하는 다수의 단층 존재를 미루어 볼 때, 지역적으로 발생하는 지구조 운동이 상대해수면 변동에 영향을 끼칠 수 있었을 것으로 예상된다.

Effects of Peripheral Pentacene Region on C-V Characteristics of Metal-Oxide-Pentacene Capacitor Structure

  • Peripheral pentacene region gives a significant influence on C-V characteristics of metal-oxide-pentacene capacitor structure. When the gate voltage goes toward negative, the effect of peripheral pentacene region becomes larger. Remaining gate DC bias constant and changing small signal frequency, the capacitance of peripheral pentacene changes along with frequency so that the total capacitance value also changes. The influence of peripheral pentacene region should be removed to measure accurate C-V characteristics, because it is hard to take into account the effect of the region quantitatively. After removing the influence of peripheral pentacene region, acceptor concentration, flat band voltage and depletion width of pentacene thin film are extracted from an accurate C-V curve as $1.58{\times}10^{17}cm^{-3}$, -1.54 V and 39.4 nm, respectively.

적층 Unidirectional CFRP 판의 이방성과 Lamb wave의 $S_0$ Mode 군속도의 관계 (The Relationship Between Group velocity of Lamb wave $S_0$ Mode and Anisotropy in Laminated Unidirectional CFRP Plates)

  • The elastic waves in the plate are dispersive waves with the characteristics of Lamb waves. However, $S_0$ symmetric mode is less dispersive in the frequency region less than first cut-off frequency. And, in anisotropic plates such as CFRP plates, the propagation velocities vary with the direction. So, the wave vector direction to be the phase velocity direction is not accord with the energy flow direction to be the group velocity direction. In this work, the group velocities of the $S_0$ symmetric mode less than the first cut-off frequency was analyzed with the group velocity dispersion curves in unidirectional CFRP plate. And, the group velocity curve obtained by the group velocity dispersion curves are compared with the measured velocities as varied the propagation direction of the Lamb wave. The measured velocities are good agreement with the corrected group velocity curve except near the fiber direction which is called the cusp region. When the propagation direction is not accorded with the principal axis, the direction of the group velocities declines to the fiber direction in the unidirectional CFRP plates. This implies that the energy propagates preferentially toward fiber direction.

  • 액체로켓 연소기 재생냉각 챔버의 제작에 사용되는 구리합금의 성형한계 곡선을 얻기 위하여 돔 장출 시험과 인장시험을 수행하였다. 성형한계 곡선에 대한 실험적인 연구를 위하여 인장시편을 사용하여 인장-압축 변형률 상태의 데이터를 얻었으며, 인장-인장의 변형률 상태를 얻기 위하여 돔 장출 시험용 시편을 사용한 돔 장출 시험 또한 수행하였다. 시험에 사용한 모든 시편은 제작방법에 따라 종 방향과 횡 방향시편으로 구분하였다. 시험 결과 인장-인장 변형률 상태에서 최대 주 변형률과 부 변형률은 62.3%와 58.6%이며 인장-압축 상태에서는 60.5%와 25.8%로 나타났다.

강원 중ㆍ북부 지역의 잣나무 임분구조 및 생장특성 (A Study on Stand Structure and Growth Characteristics of Korean White Pine (Pinus koraiensis) in North Central Region of Gangwon Province)

  • The purpose of this research was to figure out the stand structure and growth characteristic with relation to DBH, height, and volume in sixteen Pinus koraiensis plantations of Gangwon province region. Age class was diversely distributed from age class II (16 yr) to age class VIII (77 yr), and, in terms of site index, sixteen regions were superior: nine regions 'high', seven regions 'middle'. The distribution of DBH by sites appeared a bell-shaped curve, and the number of trees was the most in diameter section of 18-22 cm. The dispersion of DBH was various with age and widest ranging from 18 cm to 58 cm in age class VII-VIII. The distribution of height was also a bell-shaped curve with the smaller deviation than the distribution of DBH, and most of trees were in height section of 14-18 m. The correlation of DBH and height was high (r=0.75), and the volume bigger than 1.0 $m^3$ was presented from DBH 35 cm, height 20 m.

A Power Control Scheme of a Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Source

  • This paper describes a power control scheme to improve the performance of a fuel cell battery hybrid power source for residential application. The proposed power control scheme includes a power control strategy to control the power flow of the fuel cell hybrid power system and a digital control technique for a front-end dc-dc converter of the fuel cell. The power control strategy enables the fuel cell to operate within the high efficiency region defined by the polarization curve and efficiency curve of the fuel cell. A dual boost converter with digital control is applied as a front-end dc-dc converter to control the fuel cell output power. The digital control technique of the converter employs a moving-average digital filter into its voltage feedback loop to cancel the low frequency harmonic current drawn from the fuel cell and then limits the fuel cell output current to a current limit using a predictive current limiter to keep the fuel cell operation within the high efficiency region as well as to minimize the fuel cell oxygen starvation.

IMPROVEMENT OF DOSE CALCULATION ACCURACY ON kV CBCT IMAGES WITH CORRECTED ELECTRON DENSITY TO CT NUMBER CURVE

  • To improve accuracy of dose calculation on kilovoltage cone beam computed tomography (kV CBCT) images, a custom-made phantom was fabricated to acquire an accurate CT number to electron density curve by full scatter of cone beam x-ray. To evaluate the dosimetric accuracy, 9 volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans for head and neck (HN) cancer and 9 VMAT plans for lung cancer were generated with an anthropomorphic phantom. Both CT and CBCT images of the anthropomorphic phantom were acquired and dose-volumetric parameters on the CT images with CT density curve (CTCT), CBCT images with CT density curve ($CBCT_{CT}$) and CBCT images with CBCT density curve ($CBCT_{CBCT}$) were calculated for each VMAT plan. The differences between $CT_{CT}$ vs. $CBCT_{CT}$ were similar to those between $CT_{CT}$ vs. $CBCT_{CBCT}$ for HN VMAT plans. However, the differences between $CT_{CT}$ vs. $CBCT_{CT}$ were larger than those between $CT_{CT}$ vs. $CBCT_{CBCT}$ for lung VMAT plans. Especially, the differences in $D_{98%}$ and $D_{95%}$ of lung target volume were statistically significant (4.7% vs. 0.8% with p = 0.033 for $D_{98%}$ and 4.8% vs. 0.5% with p = 0.030 for $D_{95%}$). In order to calculate dose distributions accurately on the CBCT images, CBCT density curve generated with full scatter condition should be used especially for dose calculations in the region of large inhomogeneity.
