For performance-base design using nonlinear static analysis, it is required to predict the inelastic behavior of structural members accurately. In the present study, nonlinear numerical analysis was performed to develop the method describing the moment-curvature relationship of structural wall with boundary confinement. Through the numerical analysis, variations of behavioral characteristics and failure mechanism with the arrangement of vertical reiforcement and the length of boundary confinement were studied. Based on the findings, moment-curvature curves and curvature capacity for walls with a variety of re-bar arrangement was developed. By equalizing curvature capacity to demand, a design method which can determine the length of boundary confinement, was developed and for the effectiveness of boundary confinement and constructability, boundary confinement detail was proposed.

Two shear-flexible curved axisymmetric shell elements with two nodes, LCCS(linear curvature and constant strain) and CCCS(constant curvature and constant strain) are designed based on the assumed meridional strain fields and shallow shell geometry. At the element level, meridional curvature, membrane strain and shear strain fields are assumed by using polynomials and the displacement fields are obtained by integrating the assumed strain fields along the shallowly curved meridian. The formulated elements have high order displacement fields consistent with the strain field. Several test problems are given to demonstrate the performance of the two elements. Analysis results obtained reveal that the elements are very accurate in the displacement and the stress predictions.
This study presents the application of two indices for the locating of cracks in Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures, as well as the development of their modified forms to overcome limitations. The first index is based on mode shape curvature and the second index is based on the fourth derivative of the mode shape. In order to confirm the indices' effectiveness, both eigenvalues coupled with nonlinear static analyses were carried out and the eigenvectors for two different damage locations and intensities of load were obtained from the finite element model of RC beams. The values of the damage-locating indices derived using both indices were then compared. Generally, the mode shape curvature-based index suffered from insensitivity when attempting to detect the damage location; this also applied to the mode shape fourth derivative-based index at lower modes. However, at higher modes, the mode shape fourth derivative-based index gave an acceptable indication of the damage location. Both the indices showed inconsistencies and anomalies at the supports. This study proposed modification to both indices to overcome identified flaws. The results proved that modified forms exhibited better sensitivity for identifying the damage location. In addition, anomalies at the supports were eliminated.

Understanding the realistic behavior of concrete up to failure under different loading conditions within the framework of damage mechanics and plasticity would lead to an enhanced design of concrete structures. In the present investigation, QR (Quick Response) code based random speckle pattern is used as a non-contact sensor, which is an innovative approach in the field of digital image correlation (DIC). A four-point bending test was performed on RC beams of size 1800 mm × 150 mm × 200 mm. Image processing was done using an open source Ncorr algorithm for the results obtained using random speckle pattern and QR code based random speckle pattern. Load-deflection curves of RC beams were plotted for the results obtained using both contact and non-contact (DIC) sensors, and further, Moment (M)-Curvature (κ) relationship of RC beams was developed. The loading curves obtained were used as input data for material model parameters in finite element analysis. In finite element method (FEM) based software, concrete damage plasticity (CDP) constitutive model is used to predict the realistic nonlinear quasi-static flexural behavior of RC beams for monotonic loading condition. The results obtained using QR code based DIC are observed to be on par with conventional results and FEM results.
A simplified finite element analysis has been used to predict the weld-induced deformation to bead-on-plate welding of steel plates having curvatures in the welding direction. In this study, the equivalent loading method based on inherent strain was used to investigate the effect of longitudinal curvature on the weld-induced deformation of curved plates. Equivalent loads were derived from the inherent strain distribution around the weld line, and the loads were used for linear finite element analyses. These kinds of numerical simulations can, of course, be performed by using the rigorous thermalelastic-plastic analysis method. This approach is not, however, practical for use in weld-induced deformation analysis of large and complex structures, such as ship structures, in view of computing time and cost. The present equivalent load approach has been applied to several plate models having curvatures in the welding direction, and the results are compared with those obtained by thermal-elastic-plastic analysis and also with those obtained by the other simplified method found in reference. As far as the present results are concerned, the weld-induced deformation of curved plates can be accurately predicted by the method presented in this paper.

An improved formulation for spatial stability md free vibration of thin-walled curved beams with variable curvature and non-symmetric cross sections are presented based on the displacement field considering the second order terms of finite semitangential rotations. By introducing Vlasov's assumptions, the total potential energy is derived from the principle of linearized virtual work for a continuum. In this formulation, all displacement parameters and the warping function are defined at the centroid axis so that the coupled terms of bending and torsion are added to the elastic strain energy. Also, the potential energy due to initial stress resultants is consistently derived corresponding to the semitangential rotation and moment. The cubic Hermitian polynomials are utilized as shape functions for development of the curved thin-walled beam element having eight degrees of freedom. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this study, . numerical solutions for free vibration of arches are presented and compared with resells of other researchers and solutions analyzed by the ABAQUS's shell element.
Apart from thinning of cortical layers, the local bone curvature, varying along bone periphery, modulates ultrasound waves as well, which is however often underestimated or overlooked in clinical quantitative ultrasound (QUS). A dedicated three-dimensional finite element modelling technique for cortical bones was established, for quantitatively exploring and calibrating the effect of local curvature of cortical bone on ultrasound. Using a correlation-based mode extraction technique, high-velocity group (HVG) and low-velocity group (LVG) wave modes in a human radius were examined. Experimental verification using acrylic cylinders and in vitro testing using a porcine femur were accomplished. Results coherently unravelled the cortical curvature exerts evident influence on bone-guided ultrasound when RoC/${\lambda}$ <1 for HVG mode and RoC/${\lambda}$ <2 for LVG mode (RoC/${\lambda}$: the ratio of local bone curvature radius to wavelength); the sensitivity of LVG mode to bone curvature is higher than HVG mode. It has also been demonstrated the local group velocity of an HVG or LVG mode at a particular skeletal site is equivalent to the velocity when propagating in a uniform cylinder having an outer radius identical to the radius of curvature at that site. This study provides a rule of thumb to compensate for the effect of bone curvature in QUS.

Curved steel-concrete composite box girder has been widely adopted in urban overpasses and ramp bridges. In order to investigate its mechanical behavior under complicated and combined bending, shear and torsion load, two large-curvature composite box girders with interior angles of 25° and 45° were tested under static hogging moment. Based on the strain and deflection measurement on critical cross-sections during the static loading test, the failure mode, cracking behavior, load-displacement relationship, and strain distribution in the steel plate and rebar were investigated in detail. The test result showed the large-curvature composite box girders exhibited notable shear lag in the concrete slab and steel girder. Also, the constraint torsion and distortion effect caused the stress measured at the inner side of the composite beam to be notably higher than that of the outer side. The strain distribution in the steel web was approximately linear; therefore, the assumption that the plane section remains plane was approximately validated based on strain measurement at steel web. Furthermore, the full-process non-linear elaborate finite element (FE) models of the two specimens were developed based on commercial FE software MSC.MARC. The modeling scheme and constitutive model were illustrated in detail. Based on the comparison between the FE model and test results, the FE model effectively simulated the failure mode, the load-displacement curve, and the strain development of longitudinal rebar and steel girder with sufficient accuracy. The comparison between the FE model and the test result validated the accuracy of the developed FE model.

A three-dimensional finite element (FEM) model has been developed to simulate the deformation due to bead on plate welding of curved plates with curvature in the weld direction. By using traditional method such as thermal-elastic-plastic FEM, the weld-induced deformation can be predicted accurately. However, this method is not practical approach to analyze the deformation of large and complex structures such as ship hull structures in view of time and cost. This study is classified from the aspect of equivalent load based on inherent strain near the weld line. Therefore, the residual deformation can be simply computed by elastic analysis. Further more, a practical solution is proposed to consider the contact between the plate and the positioning jig by judging the reaction forces of the jig at calculation step and the effect of the longitudinal curvature is closely considered.

Shape design optimization for linear elasticity problem is performed using isogeometric analysis method. In many design optimization problems for real engineering models, initial raw data usually comes from CAD modeler. Then designer should convert this CAD data into finite element mesh data because conventional design optimization tools are generally based on finite element analysis. During this conversion there is some numerical error due to a geometry approximation, which causes accuracy problems in not only response analysis but also design sensitivity analysis. As a remedy of this phenomenon, the isogeometric analysis method is one of the promising approaches of shape design optimization. The main idea of isogeometric analysis is that the basis functions used in analysis is exactly same as ones which represent the geometry, and this geometrically exact model can be used shape sensitivity analysis and design optimization as well. In shape design sensitivity point of view, precise shape sensitivity is very essential for gradient-based optimization. In conventional finite element based optimization, higher order information such as normal vector and curvature term is inaccurate or even missing due to the use of linear interpolation functions. On the other hands, B-spline basis functions have sufficient continuity and their derivatives are smooth enough. Therefore normal vector and curvature terms can be exactly evaluated, which eventually yields precise optimal shapes. In this article, isogeometric analysis method is utilized for the shape design optimization. By virtue of B-spline basis function, an exact geometry can be handled without finite element meshes. Moreover, initial CAD data are used throughout the optimization process, including response analysis, shape sensitivity analysis, design parameterization and shape optimization, without subsequent communication with CAD description.
