  • In vocational high schools, mathematics classes aims to improve students' mathematics-applying ability as the employ ability. However, these classes are based on the national curriculum of mathematics likewise general high schools. In this study, we develop and present the materials of teaching and learning mathematics for teachers and students in vocational high schools. We analyze the Test for Enhanced Employ Ability and Upgraded Proficiency (TEENUP) and 2015 revised national curriculum of mathematics, and consider how teachers can use this curriculum to enhance employ ability. As a result, materials of teaching and learning mathematics should be developed in terms of use of curriculum based on teachers' didactical understanding. Moreover, we present the developed materials as examples reflecting on the framework of TEENUP and connecting the 2015 revised national curriculum of mathematics. Based on these results, we draw some recommendations for applying and developing material of teaching and learning mathematics.

  • China becomes more and more important for Koreans in political and social aspects as well as in educational aspect. However, there hasn't been any study regarding the mathematics curriculum of China. Thus, it is necessary to introduce the recent mathematics curriculum of China, compare the curriculum of China with that of Korea, and find the features of the curriculum. Several characteristics of the mathematics curriculum of China were identified; 1) mathematics strands were combined, 2) condensed and linear structure of contents, 3) providing examples for mathematics topics stated in the curriculum, and etc. Based on these characteristics, some implications were elicited for the next mathematics curriculum revision in Korea.

  • In this study, we identified the intellectual triggers for Bayesian inference and what key ideas contributed to its occurrence and discussed the practical implications of introducing Bayesian inference into the school mathematics curriculum by reflecting them. The results of the study show that the need for statistical inference about the parameter itself served as a trigger for the occurrence of Bayesian inference, and the most important idea for the occurrence of that inference was to regard the parameter itself as a probability variable rather than any fixed value. On the other hand, these research results suggest that the meaning of introducing Bayesian inference into the secondary mathematics curriculum is 'statistics education that expands the scope of uncertainty'.

  • We review the mathematics education in Korea just after the 1595 Liberation and the first, second curriculum announced in 1955 and 1963, respectively. The 3rd curriculum announced in 1973 is influenced by “New Mathematics” in America. There were theoretical research about “New Mathematics”, but no experimental research about it in the school. So, there was not much effect of “New Mathematics” in mathematics education. After that we have the 4th, 5th and 6th curriculum which is improved by the result of experience in teaching. The 7th curriculum announced in 1997 emphasized practical mathematics. In this paper, we review the mathematics education and consider some problems in the 7th curriculum. We also consider some problems in mathematics textbook authorization under the 7th curriculum. To solve these problems, we suggest some facts. Especially, we need the philosophy about mathematics education and the enough knowledge about “Mathematics for Mathematics Teachers”.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore which performance verbs are used in the achievement standards of the Korean mathematics curriculum and how to improve them. So, first, we analyzed whether there were differences in the performance verbs included in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum achievement standards by school level. In addition, it was analyzed whether there were differences in the performance verbs included in the mathematics curriculum in Korea and foreign countries. As a result of the analysis, both the frequency and the type of performance verbs included in the achievement standards of the Korean mathematics curriculum decreased as the school level increased. Also, performative verbs such as 'understand' and 'know' were excessively used. Similar tendencies were seen in foreign mathematics curricula, but the frequency and the type of performance verbs were higher than those in Korea, and various performance verbs were used. As a result of the study, it is suggested that performance verbs included in achievement standards need to be improved to improve middle and high school mathematics classes.

  • This study looked into the procedures of and the status on the implementation of the new mathematics curriculum at the secondary school level(7th through 10th grades). This study examined schools and the teachers were subjects for the actual implementation of the mathematics classroom. More specifically it examined the degree to which the particular innovation ideas of the 7th mathematics curriculum(i.e., reorganization , student-centeredness, diversification/specialization) were being carried out at every stage of the curriculum implementation. Nationwide survey for teachers including students were conducted along with classroom observation and teacher interviews. For an in-depth study into the process and the product of mathematics curriculum implementation, two provincial boards of education participated in the project as research partners. Detailed documentation on the classroom practices were made in order to provide schools and teachers including policy makers with relevant and practical suggestions for further improvement of mathematics curriculum implementation. It was found that mathematics teachers generally were reconstructing the contents giving the priority to the needs of the learners. The concept of learner-centered-ness was reflected in teaching objectives, contents, instructional methods and evaluation. In most schools observed, emphasis was given to the reorganization of the curriculum contents fitting to the concept of 'student-centered' curriculum. The efforts by teachers to diversity and/or specialize the curriculum contents with consideration of various educational conditions such as student readiness, student abilities, classroom equipment and facilities, school locations and environment were found.

  • The aim of the case study presented in this paper was to explore mathematics curriculum knowledge of a South Korean elementary teacher. An in-depth case study is applied to examine mathematics curriculum knowledge that influences teachers' instructional process including analysis of diverse artifacts such as lesson plan, observation and interviews. Findings of this study suggest that mathematics curriculum knowledge has direct relevance to teaching a lesson, designing a lesson and assessing students' work. In addition, this study identified that mathematics curriculum knowledge may be divided into two sub-categories: vertical mathematics curriculum knowledge and horizontal mathematics curriculum knowledge. The results of this case study help our understanding of South Korean elementary teachers' mathematics curriculum knowledge, which has a deep impact on their teaching practice. Moreover, this cross-national research offers implications for researchers, policymakers, and teachers in U.S. as well as those in South Korea.
