  • An approach for producing a rip current risk index using the rip current likelihood distribution obtained through the FUNWAVE simulations was applied to a rip current forecast system. The approach originally developed for an observation-based real-time rip current warning system was utilized with wave forecast data instead of observations for the rip current forecast system. The availability of the present approach was checked by comparing the observation-based rip current risk index and the wave forecast-based rip current risk index of the Haeundae Beach in 2021.

  • This study, as a basic study for establishing a influence forecasting/estimating model when drain the deep sea water to the ocean after using it, carried out studies as follows; 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads inflowing into the developing region of deep sea water in East Sea, Korea 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical distribution of water temperature and salinity, and 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analysis physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into the study area was estimated about $462.6{times}10^{3}m^{3}/day$ of daily mean in 2002 year. annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN and TP were estimated 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current results usually show about $20{\sim}40cm/sec$ of current velocity at the surface layer, it indicated a tendency that the current velocity decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the differences of water temperature and salinity between the surface layer and bottom layer were about $18^{\circ}C$ and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found that there was a definite as the water mass of deep sea water about 34 psu of salinity.

  • The purposes of this study are to investigate Korean middle school students' conceptions related to electric current, and to analyze their changes in explanations about current after their observations of the related phenomena The subjects of the study were 20 students from one middle school in Seoul The conclusions of the studty are as follows: 1, Korean middle school students have various misconceptions such as current consumption model, sequential model, monopole model, non-various current model, the most students have sequential model' 2. When an evidence is introduced, some students do not perceive the phenomena as the teacher attempts. 3. When an evidence was introduced, after observation of the evidence some of the students who had misconceptions changed their explanatios, which were not always correct explanations, and the others did not change their expanations, which their observations were mostly incorrect.

  • In this paper we present analysis of current density when the Cluster spacecraft pass the nightside auroral region at about $4-5R_E$ from the center of Earth. The analysis is made when the inter-spacecraft separation is within 200 km, which allows all four spacecraft to be situated inside the same current sheet. On 22 February 2002, two field-aligned current (FAC) events were observed in both the southern and the northern hemispheres. The FACs were calculated with magnetic field data obtained by the four spacecraft using the Curlometer method. The scales of the FACs along the spacecraft trajectory and the magnitudes were hundreds of kilometers and tens of $nA/m^2$, respectively, and both events were mapped to the auroral region in the ionosphere. We also examined reliability of the results with some parameters, and found that our results are adequately comparable with other studies. Nevertheless, some limitations that decrease the accuracy of current estimation exist.

  • There are two general techniques to observe particle movements in fluid. One is the acoustic time domain correlation technique and another is the frequency domain Doppler-shift techniques. Both techniques were reviewed and mentioned their some merits and demerits in ocean wave and current observation. Some possible application of acoustic time domain correlation technique in ocean wind wave measurement was discussed.

  • Longshore current is main transportation mean causing movement of bed load and suspended particle in coastal waters, and effective measurement method and suitable equipment for shallow water coastal environment where is frequently exposed to atmosphere. Measurement equipment for longshore drift was designed and miniature model was applied to Gyeongpo beach in May and June, 2014. The equipment consists of three main elements, spheroid outer casing, spheroid inner casing, observation module equipped with GPS. Gyroscope principle was applied to observation module, and GPS receiver always can be directed upwards. Miniature models were installed along Gyeonpo beach, and it was well to track the flow of longshore current. This research described the design and function of the equipment and results of field experiments.

  • In order to improve the predictability of marine high-impacts weather such as typhoon and high waves, the marine observation network is an essential because it could be rapidly changed by strong air-sea interaction. In this regard, the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, Korea Meteorological Administration (NIMS/KMA) has promoted the Argo float observation program since 2001 to participate in the International Argo program. In this study, current status and future direction of the NIMS/KMA Argo program are presented through the internal meeting and external expert forum. To date, a total of 264 Argo floats have been deployed into the offshore around the Korean Peninsula and the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. The real-time and delayed modes quality control (QC) system of Argo data was developed, and an official regional data assembling center (call-sign 'KM') was run. In 2002, the Argo homepage was established for the systematic management and dissemination of Argo data for domestic and international users. The future goal of the NIMS/KMA Argo program is to improve response to the marine high-impacts weather through a marine environment monitoring and observing system. The promotion strategy for this is divided into four areas: strengthening policy communication, developing observation strategies, promoting utilization research, and activating international cooperation.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method that is tracking an object in real time using particle filter and adaptive observation model. When tracking object, it happens object shape variation by camera or object movement in variety environments. The traditional method has an error of tracking from these variation, because it has fixed observation model about the selected object by the user in the initial frame. In order to overcome these problems, we propose a method that updates the observation model by calculating the similarity between the used observation model and the eight-way of edge model from the current position. If the similarity is higher than the threshold value, tracking the object using updated observation model to reset observation model. On the contrary to this, the algorithm which consists of a process is to maintain the used observation model. Finally, this paper demonstrates the performance of the stable tracking through comparison with the traditional method by using a number of experimental data.
