  • Cable-In-Conduit Conductor(CICC) is widely accepted as an advanced superconductor configuration for large scale applications such as tokamak fusion reactors, MAGLEV (MAGnetic LEVitation), and SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage). The stability of CICC cooled with supercritical helium can be very high if it is operated below a certain limiting current. This limiting current can be determined by Stekly type heat balance equation. The stability characteristic of CICC for AC operation is more complicated than that of DC because there are additional instability sources which are associated with local flux change. Ramp-rate limitation is a phenomenon discovered during US-DPC (United States-Demonstration Poloidal Coil) program, which showed apparent quench current degradation associated with high dB/dt. This paper describes recent experimental investigation results on the ramp-rate limitation and discusses current imbalance, induced current, current redistribution due to local quench of the strand in the cable.

  • In this study, a SFCL-combined DC circuit breaker system was proposed by applying the current-limiting technology for DC circuit breaking. The SFCL-combined circuit breaker system consists of a mechanical DC circuit breaker combined with superconductors. To ensure the reliable structure and operation of the SFCL-combined circuit breaker system, a simulation grid was designed using the EMTDC/PSCAD program, and simulation was conducted. The results showed that the SFCL-combined DC circuit breaker system with superconductors limited the maximum fault current by 37%. In addition, the burden on the DC circuit breaker was decreased by 87%.

  • This paper analyzes a asymmetry current with SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) operation during transient period, when a fault occurs in power systems. The principle of asymmetry current nature is reviewed and asymmetry components reduction with SFCL operation is explained. To verify the performance of SFCL, a EMTP/ATPDraw model of SFCLs using MODELS language developed and simulated. Throughout the simulation, results presents the main factors for reducing the asymmetry component of fault current are not a quenching time, but a limiting resistance of SFCL and fault initiated angle.

  • Coercion transformer is commonly used in the electrical grid which in three phase of distribution system. The accident of the electrical grid is divided into a single, a double, a third line-to-ground faults and a double, a third line-to-line faults. A single line-to-ground fault accounts for nearly 75[%] among them. In this research, when a Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL) was applied to the three phase power system, operation in a single line-to-ground fault and limiting characteristics of fault current according to turns ratio of third winding were analyzed. When a single line-to-ground fault happened, secondary winding's circuit was open. Then third winding's circuit with a SFCL was closed. So fault current was limited by diverted circuit. At this time, we could find out that size of the limited fault current could be changed according to third winding rate. We confirmed that limiting operation of the fault current was carried out within one-period. These results will be utilized in adjusting the size of the SFCL.

  • we compared the operating characteristics between flux-lock type and resistive type superconducting fault current limiters(SFCLs). Flux-lock type SFCL consists of two coils, which are wound in parallel each other through an iron core, and a high-Tc superconducting(HTSC) element is connected with coil 2 in series. The the flux-lock type SFCL can be divided into the subtractive polarity winding and the additive polarity winding operations according to the winding directions between the coil 1 and coil 2. It was confirmed from experiments that flux-lock type SFCL could improve both the quench characteristics and the transport capacity compared to the resistive type SFCL, which means, the independent operation of HTSC element.

  • In this paper, we investigated the fault current limiting and the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL, designed with the additive polarity winding, according to the variations of turn number's ratio and the comparative analysis between the resistive type and the flux-lock type SFCLs were performed as well. From the analysis for the short-circuit tests, the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the larger turn number's ratio was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations compared to the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the lower turn number's ratio through the fast quench occurrence of the high-$T_C$ superconducting (HTSC) element comprising the flux-lock type SFCL. In addition, the recovery time of the flux-lock type SFCL after the fault removed could be confirmed to be shorter in case of the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the lower turn number ratio.

  • Increase of fault current due to larger power demand has increased the possibility of the breakdown of the power system. To protect the power system effectively from the larger fault current, several countermeasures have been proposed. Among them, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected as one of the most effective solutions. In this paper, the fault current limiter, which consists of a ideal switch as a trigger part and the limiter as the limiting part, has been applied into the distribution system. From the analysis for the fault current limiting operation of SFCL, the inserting resistance's magnitude has been confirmed to affect OCR trip time in a short-circuit of distribution system.

  • According to the increase of electric consumption nowadays, power system becomes complicated. Due to this, the size of single line-to-ground fault from power system also increases to have many problems. In order to resolve these problems effectively, an Superconducting Fault Current Limiter(SFCL) was proposed and continuous study has been done. In this paper, an SFCL was combined to the neutral line of a transformer. An superconductivity has the characteristics of zero resistance below critical temperature. because of this, SFCL has nearly zero resistance. so we connecting SFCL to neutral line will not only have any loss in the normal operation but also have the less burden of electric power because of only limiting the initial fault current. We analyzed the characteristics of current, voltage according to the changes of turn ratio of 3 phase system in case of combinations of an SFCL to the neutral line. It was confirmed that the limiting rate of initial fault current by the increase of turn ratio was reduced.

  • We present the basic properties of a superconductive current limiting fuse (SCLF) based on YBCO/Au films. The SCLF consists of meander type YBCO stripes covered with an Au layer for current shunt. The fault current was first limited to a designed value in less than 0.4 msec by resistance development in YBCO/Au upon quenching. This enables the SCLF to transfer small fault power and the suppressed current was sustained for more than 0.5 msec while Au layer melting and arcing. The arcing time was less than 2.5 msec, that is short enough to do self-interruption.

  • A flux lock-type SFCL consists of two coils which are wound in parallel each other through an iron core, and a HTSC thin film connects in series with coil 2. The operation of the flux-lock type SFCL can be divided into the subtractive polarity winding and the additive polarity winding operations according to the winding directions between coil 1, coil 2. When a fault occurs, the fault current in the HTS thin film exceeds the critical current so that resistance is generated in the HTS film, and thereby the fault current is limited by an instant rise in the impedance of the flux-lock type SFCL. We investigated he variances of initial fault current limiting instant according to the ratio of inductance of coil 1 and coil 2 in the flux-lock type SFCL. It was confirmed from experiments that the initial fault current limiting instant in the subtractive polarity and additive polarity windings were faster as the ratio of coil 2' inductance for coil 1's inductance increased. The 1st peak of fault current in case of the subtractive polarity winding was higher as the ratio of coil 2's inductance for coil 1's inductance increased. On the other hand, in case of the additive polarity winding, the 1st peak of fault current was lower.
