In this paper, a fault tolerant control against sensor faults of electric parking brake (EPB) is proposed. Fault tolerant control method of EPB system is strongly demanded since sensor faults can endanger a driver's safety. In this paper, a clamp force estimation method is presented using motor's armature current and angular velocity. Clamp force estimation method is applied for fault detection method with parity equations. The goal of the detection method is to detect and identify faults in encoder, current sensor, force sensor, and parking cable. And a switching logic for fault tolerant control against the three sensor faults is suggested. Experimental results show that the proposed force estimation method satisfies the specifications of EPB system. The effectiveness of the fault detection method is validated with experimental results. Although a single sensor fault happens, EPB system with the proposed fault detection method does not develop into a failure on subsystem or system level.
A label-free DNA detection method was developed for a simple electrochemical DNA sensor with a short assay time. Self-assembled monolayers of peptide nucleic acid were used as a probe on gold electrodes. The formation of the self-assembled monolayers on the gold electrodes was successfully checked by means of cyclic voltammetry. The target DNA, hybridized with peptide nucleic acid, can be detected by the anodic peak current of ferrocene dendrimers, which interact electrostatically with the target DNA. This anodic peak current was measured by square wave voltammetry at 0.3 V to decrease the detection limit on the order of the nanomolar concentrations. As a result, the label-free electrochemical DNA sensor can detect the target DNA in concentrations ranging from 1 nM to $1\;{\mu}M$ with a detection limit of 1 nM.
Improvement of power factor is achieved by reactive-current compensation, connecting power condenser to the circuit. This paper describes a method of reactive-current compensation, employing thyristor switching of capacitor banks without any breaker. This method reduces supply transients to the minimum by means of connecting condenser, because thyristor is triggered at zero point in condenser current. The reactive current detection and the experimental system to trigger thyristor at appropriate moment are given. IThe results show the fast reactive-current compensation on the condition of minimum transient.
A motor is the workhorse of our industry. The issues of preventive and condition-based maintenance, online monitoring, system fault detection, diagnosis, and prognosis are of increasing importance. Different internal motor faults (e.g., inter-turn short circuits, broken bearings, broken rotor bars) along with external motor faults (e.g., phase failure, mechanical overload, blocked rotor) are expected to happen sooner or later. This paper introduces the fault detection technique of induction motors based upon the stator current. The fault motors have rotor bar broken or rotor unbalance defect, respectively. The stator currents are measured by the current meters and stored by the time domain. The time domain is not suitable to represent the current signals, so the frequency domain is applied to display the signals. The Fourier Transformer is used for the conversion of the signal. After the conversion of the signals, the features of the signals have to be extracted by the signal processing methods like a wavelet analysis, a spectrum analysis, etc. The discovered features are entered to the pattern classification model such as a neural network model, a polynomial neural network, a fuzzy inference model, etc. This paper describes the fault detection results that use wavelet decomposition. The wavelet analysis is very useful method for the time and frequency domain each. Also it is powerful method to detect the features in the signals.
Post-tensioning (PT) tendons are commonly used for the assembly of modularized concrete members, and tension is applied to the tendons during construction to facilitate the integrated behavior of the members. However, the tension in a PT tendon decreases over time due to steel corrosion and concrete creep, and consequently, the stress on the anchor head that secures the PT tendon also diminishes. This study proposes an automatic detection system to identify tension reduction in a PT tendon using pulsed-eddy-current (PEC) measurement. An eddy-current sensor is installed on the surface of the steel anchor head. The sensor creates a pulsed excitation to the driving coil and measures the resulting PEC response using the pick-up coil. The basic premise is that the tension reduction of a PT tendon results in stress reduction on the anchor head surface and a change in the PEC intensity measured by the pick-up coil. Thus, PEC measurement is used to detect the reduction of the anchor head stress and consequently the reduction of the PT tendon force below a certain threshold value. The advantages of the proposed PEC-based tension-reduction-detection (PTRD) system are (1) a low-cost (< $ 30), low-power (< 2 Watts) sensor, (2) a short inspection time (< 10 seconds), (3) high reliability and (4) the potential for embedded sensing. A 3.3 m long full-scale monostrand PT tendon was used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PTRD system. The PT tendon was tensioned to 180 kN using a custom universal tensile machine, and the tension was decreased to 0 kN at 20 kN intervals. At each tension, the PEC responses were measured, and tension reduction was successfully detected.
It was discovered in a Korean PWR that an extensive number of very short and shallow cracks in the SG tubes were undetectable by eddy current in-service-inspection because of the masking effect of sludge deposits. Axial stress corrosion cracks at the outside diameter of the steam generator tubes near the line contacts with the tube support plates are the major concern among the six identical Korean nuclear power plants having CE-type steam generators with Alloy 600 high temperature mill annealed tubes, HU3&4 and HB3~6. The tubes in HB3&4 have a less susceptible microstructure so that the onset of ODSCC was substantially delayed compared to HU3&4 whose tubes are most susceptible to ODSCC among the six units. The numbers of cracks detected by the eddy current inspection jumped drastically after the steam generators of HB4 were chemically cleaned. The purpose of the chemical cleaning was to mitigate stress corrosion cracking by removing the heavy sludge deposit, since a corrosive environment is formed in the occluded region under the sludge deposit. SGCC also enhances the detection capability of the eddy current inspection at the same time. Measurement of the size of each crack using the motorized rotating pancake coil probe indicated that the cracks in HB4 were shorter and substantially shallower than the cracks in HU3&4. It is believed that the cracks were shorter and shallower because the microstructure of the tubes in HB4 is less susceptible to ODSCC. It was readily understood from the size distribution of the cracks and the quantitative information available on the probability of detection that most cracks in HB4 had been undetected until the steam generators were chemically cleaned.

This paper proposes a novel decision feedback differential phase detection (DF-DPD) for M-ary DPSK. A conventional differential phase detection method for M-ary Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK) can simplify the receiver architecture. However, it possesses a poorer bit error rate (BER) performance than coherent detection because of the prior noisy phase sample. Multiple-symbol differential detection methods, such as maximum likelihood differential phase detection, Viterbi-DPD, and DF-DPD using L-1 previous detected symbols, have attempted to improve BER performance. As the detection length, L, increases, the BER performance of the DF-DPD improves but the complexity of the architecture increases dramatically. This paper proposes a simplified DF-DPD architecture replacing the conventional delay and additional architecture with an accumulator. The proposed architecture also improves BER performance by minimizing the current differential phase noise through the accumulation of previous differential phase noise samples. The simulation results show that the BER performance of the proposed architecture approaches that of a coherent detection with differential decoding.
Because arsenic (As) is a chemical substance toxic to humans, there have been extensive investigations on the development of As detection methods. In this study, the electrochemical determination of As on nanoporous gold (NPG) electrodes was investigated using anodic stripping voltammetry. The electrochemical surface area of the NPG electrodes was controlled by changing the reaction times during the anodization of Au for NPG preparation, and its effect on the electrochemical behavior during As detection was examined. The detection efficiency of the NPG electrodes improved as the roughness factor of the NPG electrodes increased up to around 100. A further increase in the surface area of the NPG electrodes resulted in a decrease of the detection efficiency due to high background current levels. The most efficient As detection efficiency was obtained on the NPG electrodes prepared with an anodization time of 50 s. The effects of the detection parameters and of the Cu interference in As detection were investigated and the NPG electrode was compared to flat Au electrodes.
This paper presents a single-phase parallel active power filter with an analog control circuit to eliminate for harmonic source currents generated by nonlinear loads. The proposed system removes the harmonic source currents by injecting a compensation current that is 180' out of phase with the load harmonic current. The detection of the load harmonics is realized by a simple new structure, referred to the Notch Filter with GIC (Generalized Impedance Converter), which has higher Q than existing harmonic detecters and a simpler structure. The compensation current is obtained using the proposed harmonic detection circuit, DC-Link voltage, and output current of the full-bridge inverter controlled current mode PWM controller. The operation of the proposed system is verified experimentally.
