  • This study investigated fundamental properties of lightweight foamed concrete using cement kiln dust (CKD) and both fly ash(FA) and stability agent. Test results showed that concrete incorporating more amounts of admixture decreased slump flow and it caused increase of superplasiticizer in order to secure the fluidity performance. In addition concrete adding stability agent showed stable flow state, resisting segregation of materials and decreasing bleeding capacity. Sinking depth of concrete incorporating 20% of CKD and adding 0.002% of stability agent was indicated at 0mm. For the properties of hardened concrete. compressive strength of concrete incorporating CKD declined due to a lower appearance density, compared with other specimens. The difference of that was not very significant and the value of ail specimen was higher than KS range. Moreover strength of concrete incorporating CKD was even higher at curing temperature $5^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength ratio of concrete incorporating CKD was indicated between 0.50 to 0.59, which is higher value than control concrete. Heat conductivity of concrete incorporating FA was under the KS range while concrete incorporating 20% of CKD was satisfied in KS. Concrete adding stability agent improved insulation performance due to the lower heat conductivity. In conclusion, it is possible that concrete incorporating 20% of CKD and adding 0.002% of stability agent can secure high quality of lightweight foamed concrete.

  • In order to minimize flexible printed circuit(FPC), which is used in computer, communication, medical facility, aviation space industry, it is required to improve the interfacial adhesion of polymide/epoxy or polyimide/polyimide consists of FPC. In this study, it was considered to improve the adhesion strength of polyimide/epoxy joint by introducing functional group on polyimide film and improving mechanical property of epoxy. Functional group on polyimide film was introduced by changing polyimide film surface to polyamic acid in KOH aqueous solution. The optimum conditions for surface modification were the concentration of 1M KOH and treatment time of 5min. Also, the optimum adhesion strength of polyimide/epoxy joint was obtained using rubber modified epoxy and polyamic acid as a base resin and curing agent of epoxy adhesive, respectively. The degree of surface modification of polyimide film examined with contact angle measurement of FTIR, thus modification of polyimide to polyamic acid was identified. Fracture surface of plymide/epoxy joint was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and modified polyamic acid reimidezed to polymide as increasing curing temperature.

  • We isolated Streptomyces spry. from Korean soil, which showed high cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines, L1210 and P388Dl. Among 30 strains, three strains (DKM 104, DKM 128, DKM 409) were appeared to possess plasmid. Strain DKM 104 and DKM 128 had two CCC(Covalently Closed Circular) form plasmid, about 20 Kb in size and about 1 Kb compared with λ Hind III DNA size marker. And strain DKM 409 had three plasmids, among which two plasmic were CCC form about 20 Kb and about 20 Kb compared with same size marker. To find out whether plasmid involved in production of antitumor agent or not, we performed to curing experiment. Comparing cytotoxicity between culture filtrate of plasmid-containing strains and cured strains, we knew that only the cytotoxic activity of the strain DKM 128 was involved in plasmid.

  • Colloidal coating solution was prepared to enhance the hydrophilic property of the film surface. Water and ethanol were used as the dispersion media and (glycidoxypropyl) trimethoxysilane (GPS) as a binder in the colloidal silica coatings. Ethylene diamine was added to the colloidal silica solution as the curing agent. The colloidal silica solution was regarded as a hard-sphere suspension model with low volume fraction of the silica particles. Rheological properties of the silica suspensions modified with GPS have been investigated as a function of pH and concentration. The acidic solution showed high viscosity change by fast hydrolysis reaction and adsorption of the organic binders on the surface of silica particles. However, the hydrolysis was slow at the basic condition and the binders combined with themselves by condensation. The viscosity change was smallest at pH 7. The viscosity increased with the curing time after adding ethylenediamine, and the increase of viscosity at low pH was higher than that at high pH. The hydrophilic properties of the coating film were investigated by the contact angle of water and film surface. The smallest contact angle was shown under the strong acidic condition of pH 2.

  • The isothermal cure reactions of blends of epoxy (DGEBA, diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A)/anhydride resin with polyamide copolymer (poly(dimmer acid-co-alkyl polyamine)) or PEI were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Rheological measurements have been made to investigate the viscosity and mechanical relaxation behavior of the blends. The reaction rate and the final cure conversion were decreased with increasing the amount of thermoplastics in the blends. Lower values of final cure conversions in the epoxy/thermoplastic blends indicate that thermoplastics hinder the cure reaction between the epoxy and the curing agent. Complete miscibility was observed in the uncured blends of epoxy/thermoplastics up to $120^{\circ}C$ but phase separations occurred in the early stages of the curing process at higher temperatures than $120^{\circ}C$. According to the rheological measurement results, a rise of G' and G" at the onset of phase separation is seen. A rise of G' and G" is not observed for neat epoxy system since no phase separation is seen during cure reaction. At the onset of phase separation the rheological behavior was influenced by the amount of thermoplastics in the epoxy/thermoplastic blends, and the onset of phase separation can be detected by rheological measurements.

  • In this study, fabrication method of inorganic insulation were studied to reduce $CO_2$ from buildings. Main materials for inorganic insulation were used cement, blast furnace slag and aluminum powder as foaming agent. Mixing ratio of cement and slag was controlled and physical properties of inorganic insulation were analyzed. When inorganic insulation was fabricated using cement and slag, expanded slurries were not sunken and hardened normally. Pore size was 0.5 - 2 mm; mean pore size was about 1mm in inorganic insulation. Compressive strength of inorganic insulation increased with curing time and increased slightly with cement fineness. However, specific gravity decreased slightly with curing time; this phenomenon was caused by evaporation of adsorptive water. When inorganic insulation was dried at $60^{\circ}C$, compressive strength was higher than that of undried insulation. The highest compressive strength was found with a mixture of cement (50%) and slag (30%) in inorganic insulation. Compressive strength was 0.32 MPa, thermal conductivity was 0.043 W/mK and specific gravity was $0.12g/cm^3$.

  • Epoxy/graphite/expanded graphite composites have been prepared in various weight ratios and thermal degradation and electrical properties were estimated in order to use for the bipolar plate materials in PEMFC. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the epoxy/graphite system cured by a curing agent GX-533 was most proper because its weight loss until $80^{\circ}C$ at which PEMFC would be operated was 0.3 wt%, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis showed its cure temperature would be sufficient at $80^{\circ}C$. The activation energy for the cure reaction was 132.0 kJ/mol and the pre-exponential factor was $1.76{\times}10^{17}min^{-1}$. Electrical conductivity on the surface of the bipolar plate prepared under a pressure of 200 $kgf/cm^2$ was increased from 4 to 25 $S/cm^2$ by increasing expanded graphite (EG) content from 50 phr to 90 phr. The percolation threshold was initiated around 75 phr and the corrosion rate at 80 phr was 1.903 $uA/cm^2$.

  • The cure kinetics of blends of epoxy(tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane ; TGDDM)/curing agent(diaminodiphenyl sulfone ; DDS) resin with amine terminated polyetherimide-CTBN-amine terminated polyetherimide triblock copolymer(ABA) were studied using differential scanning calorimetry under isothermal conditions to determine the reaction parameters such as activation energy and reaction constants. By increasing the amount of ABA in the blends, the final cure conversion was decreased. Lower values of the final cure conversions in the epoxy/ABA blends indicated that ABA hinders the cure reaction between the epoxy and curing agents. 1be value of the reaction order, m, for the initial autocatlytic reaction was not affected by blending ABA with epoxy resin, and the value was approximately 1.0. The value of n for the nth order component in the autocatalytic analysis was increased by increasing the amount of ABA in the blends, and the value increased from 2.0-3.4. A diffusion controlled reaction was observed as the cure conversion increased and the rate equation was successfully analyzed by incorporating the diffusion control term for the epoxy/DDS/ABA blends.

  • This article describes a laboratory research on stabilizing tropical peat using ordinary Portland cement (OPC) as a binding agent, and polypropylene and steel fibres as chemically inert additives. California bearing ratio (CBR) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were carried out to evaluate the increase in the strength of the stabilized samples compacted at their optimum moisture contents and air cured for up to 90 days. The results show that the UCS values of stabilized peat samples increased by as high as 748.8% by using OPC (5%), polypropylene fibres (0.15%), and steel fibres (2%). The CBR values of the samples stabilized with OPC (5%), polypropylene fibres (0.15%), and steel fibres (4%) showed an increase of as high as 122.7%. The stabilized samples showed a shrinkage in volume upon air curing and this shrinkage was measured by an index called, volume shrinkage index (VSI). The highest VSI recorded was 36.19% for peat without any additives; and the minimum was 0% for the sample containing 30% OPC, 0.15% polypropylene fibres and 2% steel fibres. The technique of stabilizing peat with OPC, polypropylene and fibres, coupled with air curing, appears to be cost-effective compared with other frequently used techniques.
