  • The objective of this research is to study on the analysis of long-term performance characteristics of various solar thermal system for heating protected horticulture system for reducing heating cost, increasing the value of product by environment control, and developing advanced culture technology by deploying solar thermal system. Long term field test for the demonstration was carried out in horticulture complex in Jeju Island. Reliability and economic aspect of the system which was operated complementary with thermal storage and solar hot water generation were analyzed by investigating collector efficiency, operation performance, and control features. Optimum operating condition and its characteristics were closely investigated by changing the control condition based on the temperature difference which is the most important operating parameter. However, it is expected that, in high-insolation areas where large-scale ground storage is adaptable, solar system demonstrated in the research could be economically competitive and promisingly disseminate over various application areas.

  • A new approach for ground water treatment combines a permeable Fe(0) barrier to breakdown higher chlorinated solvents like PCE and TCE with a down gradient aerobic biological treatment system to biotransform less chlorinated solvents, such as DCE and vinyl chloride (VC). The expected bacterial performance down gradient of an Fe(0) barrier was evaluated through laboratory batch experiments with a toluene-degrading mixed culture that cometabolically transforms cis-1,2-DCE and VC. The amount of cis-1,2-DCE (initially at 2,000 ppb) and VC (initially at 2,000 ppb) transformed was controlled by the initial toluene(20,000 ppb) concentration. VC was removed much more effectively than Cis-1,2-DCE, and a higher toluene concentration in comparison to the co-substrate concentrations was needed for complete co-substrate removal. Overall, the coupling of an Fe(0) barrier and subsequent biodegradation appears feasible for remediation of complex mixtures of chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater.

  • As the traditional style is treated as one of the important themes in fashion recently, how to apply the formative character in Korean and Japanese traditional dress to modern fashion is searched through actual analysis of photograph material, Both design formative elements were confirmed by clothing and fashion department majors through visual data so that 20 pieces of them were selected as final analysis object. Korean traditional dress form in modern fashion emphasizes curvaceousness as plane division. On the other hand, that of Japanese shows straight line, layered, belt, big look through up & down connection style. Color in Korean traditional dress prefers white and original color and modern fashion displays the natural beauty through harmony of similar colors ; that of Japanese based on natural color such as persimmon color cherishes natural beauty and implicit moderation showing harmony of various original color with brilliance and neutral color. While texture in Korean traditional dress was fine and exquisite, that of Japanese preferred coarse and tactile ones. In motif, Korea was natural and geometric but Japanese variously used complex and geometric ones. Likewise, the result suggests that the formative character in Korean and Japanese modern fashion affects the modern dress format as new aesthetic sense and takes on more complicated and subtle aspect in basic form, not just use so far.

  • Even it's not easy to in the cycle of the change without the qualification of the data, but we can try to figure out a cycle of change in fashion as Kroeber used content analysis. As content analysis with quantitative data increases the objectivity, especially in the case of highly complex materials like s appearance, multi-directional research method; quantitative and qualitative methods are combined in this study. In this research, first the change in hair length(HL), hair width(HW), hair height(HH) was examined to find out possible cyclic aspects of change in each elements and the significant relationships among the hair style was probed and the cyclic aspects between hair style elements and skirt style elements were compared. The data was analyzed by using Time series analysis and Pearson correlation coefficients. The statistical analysis of the hair style of 20th century showed that the hair style's elements changed independently and indicated the cyclic aspects in hair style as Kroeber's fashion cycle. To consider of this result, the hair style changed in a cyclic pattern, its pattern were different from skirt style's. And as hair style's change was affected by change, the hair styles change appeared during wars and disappeared during a social stabilization; this result supports social change theory.

  • Optimal cultivation conditions for the production of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase(PAL) from Rhodotorula aurantiaca K-505 were selected, and the kinetic parameters of the produced PAL were determined. The most suitable carbon and nitrogen sources were glucose and tryptone, respectively. The strain expressed PAL constituttively when using the optimized semi-complex media. High cell density culture could be critical for maximal production of PAl since the PAL ynthesis was growth associated. maximum PAL activity was observed at initial pH 6.0. although the ll growth was not markedly affected by temperature between 22 and 28$^{\circ}C$, the cells yielded the maximum PAL activity when cultivated at 22$^{\circ}C$. The maximum activity for deamination of L-phenylalnine to trans-cinnamic acid was observed around pH 8.8. The PAL activity gave the maximum at 45$^{\circ}C$, and greatly decreased at higher than 5$0^{\circ}C$. Activation energy({TEX}$E_{a}${/TEX}) calculated from Arrhenius equation was 6.28 kcal/mol in the range of 22$^{\circ}C$ to 4$0^{\circ}C$. A oolf plot showed that the enzyme reaction follows Michaelis-Menten equation, whose {TEX}$K_{M}${/TEX} and {TEX}$V_{max}${/TEX} values were 4.65$\times${TEX}$10^{-3}${/TEX} M and 0.89$\mu$ mol/mg-min respectively.

  • We examined a role of proteasome, the non-lysosomal multicatalytic protease complex,on the differentiation of chick embryonic myoblasts in culture. The peptide hydrolyzing activities of proteasome were found to change; the hydrolyzing activity against N-succinyl-Leu-Leu- Val- Tyr-7 -amido-4-methy1coumarin (SLLVY-AMC) was prominent and increased with myogenic differentiation. Proteasome inhibitors, N-carbobenzoxy-Leu-Leu-norvalinal (MG115) and N-carbobenzoxy-Ile-Glu (O-t-butyl)-Ala-Leucinal (PSI), blocked membrane fusion of myoblasts as well as the SLLVY-AMC hydrolyzing activity. Those inhibitory activities of the agents occurred in parallel, but were reversible and both cell fusion and the peptidase activity were restored when the agents were withdrawn from the culture medium. On the other hand, the agents caused accumulation of the ubiquitinylated proteins in the cytoskeletal proteins. These results suggest that each of the peptide hydrolyzing activities of proteasome is independently regulated during the myogenic differentiation and the chymotrypsin-like activity may play an important role in that process.

  • Is a multiple number of sputum specimens necessary for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis? To answer this question, 6844 respiratory specimens obtained from previously untreated patients suspected of having pulmonary tuberculosis between 1998 and 2001 were evaluated retrospectively. All of the specimens were evaluated by acid fast bacilli smear and BACTEC 460 TB culture system. A total of 785 (11%) specimens from 353 patients were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. For 76% (270/353) of these patients the organism was detected from sputum specimens collected sequentially for daily basis. Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated in the first, second and third samples of the majority (98%,195/199) of patients who had three or more sputum samples sent to the laboratory. Our results indicate that, we could carry out Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolation in the first, second and third sputum samples of the overwhelming majority of the patients and the diagnostic value of four or more sputum specimens submitted to the laboratory was very low (2%). We recommend that, for definitive and cost-effective diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis at least three sequential sputum specimens be collected for all patients suspected pulmonary tuberculosis.
