  • Despite the great significance we attach on culture, only a handful of researches focus on the characteristics and practices of cultural journalism. This study has aimed to unravel the changes in the trajectory of cultural journalism of Korean major newspapers, through content analysis and qualitative interpretation of the cultural contents they report. The results show that the number of cultual items have decreased compared to that of 10 years ago, although the entire number of pages has meanwhile increased. News items focused on 'products(advertisement)' and 'life(style)' have increased, whereas those on 'knowledge refined' and 'leisure entertainment' have decreased. 'Critique review commentary', 'academics' and 'performance exhibition art music' items turn out to have decreased significantly; soft contents such as mass culture, tourism, fashion and beauty, on the other hand, have increased considerably. Moreover, the demographic characteristics of news contributors remain almost the same, except that the proportion of ordinary readers/audience has slightly increased. Similarly, although there were no difference regarding the sources of direct quotation, the frequency of quotes from ordinary readers has increased. Consequently, these results imply how the cultural journalism of Korean newspapers are limited in encompassing diverse types of content, differentiating constitution, and presenting critical viewpoints.

  • The goal of this study was to analyze the demands of parents of an after-school program. In order to do this, we looked at cultural centers and their curriculums. Cultural centers are one of the most popular private education centers for preschoolers, and are used for the operation of special activities. The research was conducted on preschool curriculums of 300 cultural centers, including cultural centers of department stores and supermarkets. The curriculum analysis was conducted for 400 preschool curriculums of three cultural centers, which had the most programs of all. The scope of the curriculum analysis was based on the 3rd Childcare Standard Curriculum for infants and Nuri Curriculum for preschoolers. As a result of the analysis, there were 12,286 programs for infants. The most popular topics for programs were comprehensive activity, physical activity, and music activity. There were 15,310 programs for preschoolers. Physical activity was the most popular topic among them. It was followed by drawing activity and number and operating activity. Analyzing the contents of these programs, we found that 'participating in physical activity' of physical exercise, and 'expressing artistically' of artistic experience were the most popular contents of infants. 'Expressing artistically' of artistic experience and 'control of body and basic exercise' of physical exercise were most popular contents for preschoolers. The results show that parents demand physical activity programs for infants and artistic activity programs for preschoolers. The results of the research should be considered when childcare centers try to make a special after-school program.

  • Culture is an indispensable element in modern society in improving the quality of life for city dwellers and stimulating the urbanization. The conspicuous emergence of cultural cities, which is a new paradigm, can be understood in that context. Global cities are pursuing cultural cities, and autonomous regions in Korea are also pushing ahead with the urbanization which combines cultural elements. Specifically, Nam-gu of Incheon has set an example of successful cultural city for other autonomous regions. The cultural environmental policy of Nam-gu is deemed to have retained the infrastructure, cultural urban landscape and living space, and a plenty of contents. The real significance of cultural city lies in the pursuit of sustainable urban development as a culture-friendly city. For that, the direction of cultural environmental city has to be firmly set, and related law and system should be strengthened. Above all, it is critical to pursue human-oriented cultural city by showing citizens what roles they have to play, setting the right direction, and improving the partnership.

  • The predominant concern of the study consist of: (1) whether Chinese young people think Korean Wave would lasts; (2) the direct effect of viewing degree of Korean contents on the sustainability of Korean Wave; (3) the mediation effect of liking for Korean Wave and receptiveness to foreign cultural inflow on that sustainability; (4) the moderating effect of sense of rivalry between Korean and China. The research is based on a survey conducted with 371 chinese people between high teen and early 30's, located in Guilin of Guangxi and Zhengzhou of Henan in China. The notable findings are as follow: While the group with strong rivalry does not have a direct effect of viewing degree on the sustainability for Korean Wave, the group with weak rivalrous sense and higher viewing degree of Korean contents predict shorter sustainability of Korean Wave, therefore, the moderating effect of sense of rivalry between Korea and China is significant .Next, liking for Korean Wave shows a full mediating effect among Chinese with weak rivalry and a partial mediating effect among them with strong rivalry. The mediating effect of receptiveness to foreign cultural inflow is non-significant.
