A New Challenge to Korean American Religious Identity: Cultural Crisis in Korean American Christianity

  • This paper explores the relationship between Korean immigrants to the United States and their religious identity from the cultural point of view. Most scholarly studies on Korean immigrants in the United States have been dominated by sociological approach and ethnic studies in examining the social dimension of the Korean immigrant communities while neglecting issues concerning their religious identity and cultural heritage. Most Korean immigrants to America attend Korean churches regardless their religious affiliation before they came to America. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the fact that Korean church has provided a necessary social service for the newly arrived immigrants. Korean churches have been able to play a key role in the life of Korean immigrants. Korean immigrants, however, have shown a unique aspect regarding their religious identity compared to other immigrants communities in the United States. America is a nation of immigrants, coming from different parts of the world. Each immigrant community has brought their unique cultural heritage and religious persuasion. Asian immigrants, for example, brought their own traditional religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism. People from the Middle Eastern countries brought Islamic faith while European Jews brought the Jewish tradition. In these immigrant communities, religious identity and cultural heritage were homo genously harmonized. Jewish people built synagogue and taught Hebrew, Jewish history, culture, and faith. In this case, synagogue was not only the house of worship for Jews but also the center for learning Jewish history, culture, faith, and language. In short, Jewish cultural history was intimately related to Jewish religious history; for Jewish immigrants, learning their social and political history was indeed identical with leaning of their religious history. The same can be said about the relationship between Indian community and Hinduism. Hindu temples serve as the center of Indian immigrantsin providing the social, cultural, and spiritual functions. Buddhist temples, for that matter, serve the same function to the people from the Asian countries. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Tibetans, and Thais have brought their respective Buddhist traditions to America and practice and maintain both their religious faith and cultural heritage. Middle Eastern people, for example, have brought Islamic faith to the United States, and Mosques have become the center for learning their language, practicing their faith, and maintaining their cultural heritage. Korean immigrants, unlike any other immigrant group, have brought Christianity, which is not a Korean traditional religion but a Western religion they received in 18th and 19th centuries from the West and America, back to the United States, and church has become the center of their lives in America. In this context, Koreans and Korean-Americans have a unique situation in which they practice Christianity as their religion but try to maintain their non-Christian cultural heritage. For the Korean immigrants, their religious identity and cultural identity are not the same. Although Korean church so far has provides the social and religious functions to fill the need of Korean immigrants, but it may not be able to become the most effective institution to provide and maintain Korean cultural heritage. In this respect, Korean churches must be able to open to traditional Korean religions or the religions of Korean origin to cultivate and nurture Korean cultural heritage.

간호대학생의 다문화 자기효능감과 문화적 역량과의 관계 (Relationship between the Transcultural Self-efficacy and Cultural Competence of Nursing Students)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the relationship between the transcultural self-efficacy (TSE) and cultural competence of nursing students. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study. A total of 352 nursing students were recruited from two universities in Incheon and Gyeonggi. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA with Scheffe's test, correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean score of TSE was 6.20 (out of 10). The mean score of cultural competence was 4.98 (out of 7). TSE was positively correlated with cultural competence (r=.47, p<.001). The practical domain (β=.18, p=.001) and affective domain (β=.35, p<.001) of TSE had a significant effect on cultural competence. TSE accounted for 22.3% of cultural competence. Conclusion: Educational programs for improving cultural competence should include contents to improve the affective and practical domains of TSH. It is also helpful for subjects with various cultural backgrounds to learn interview skills and nursing skills through practice to reinforce cultural competence.

일본 요코하마시의 수변공간개발과 문화정책 (Waterfront Development and Cultural Policy in Yokohama City, Japan)

  • 수변공간개발 사례를 중심으로 문화예술을 활용한 도시공간 재생의 의미를 이해해 보고자 한다. 특히 지역문화의 활성화를 핵심적인 의도로 가지는 문화도시전략에서 문화예술의 역할을 해항도시의 수변공간개발에서 문화정책 및 그 실현과정을 통해 고찰한다. 이를 위해 수변공간을 둘러싼 역사적 건축물이나 수변 경관 등 개성적이고 매력 있는 도시경관과 지역자원을 활용하여 문화예술공간 창출을 통한 성공적인 수변공간개발을 진행하고 있는 일본 요코하마를 대상으로 살펴본다. 요코하마는 일본의 '문화예술창조도시' 전략의 일환으로 '창조도시 요코하마'라는 문화정책을 펼치고 있는데, 그 중 공간계획정책이라고 할 수 있는 '내셔널 아트 파크 구상'은 문화예술공간 창출을 통해 수변공간 재생을 실현하고 있다. 이 사업의 기본적 의도와 구체적 실행과정 등을 살펴봄으로써 해항도시의 수변공간개발에서 문화예술이 가지는 역할을 이해하고 수변공간 재생에 있어서 문화정책의 방향성에 대해 검토한다.

Perceptions and practices of commensality and solo-eating among Korean and Japanese university students: A cross-cultural analysis

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Commensality, eating together with others, is a major representation of human sociality. In recent time, environments around commensality have changed significantly due to rapid social changes, and the decline of commensality is perceived as a serious concern in many modern societies. This study employs a cross-cultural analysis of university students in two East Asian countries, and examines cross-cultural variations of perceptions and actual practices of commensality and solo-eating. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The analysis was drawn from a free-list survey and a self-administrative questionnaires of university students in urban Korea and Japan. The free-listing survey was conducted with a small cohort to explore common images and meanings of commensality and solo-eating. The self-administrative questionnaire was developed based on the result of the free-list survey, and conducted with a larger cohort to examine reasons and problems of practices and associated behaviors and food intake. RESULTS: We found that Korean subjects tended to show stronger associations between solo-eating and negative emotions while the Japanese subjects expressed mixed emotions towards the practice of solo-eating. In the questionnaire, more Korean students reported they prefer commensality and tend to eat more quantities when they eat commensally. In contrast, more Japanese reported that they do not have preference on commensality and there is no notable difference in food quantities when they eat commensally and alone. Compared to the general Korean cohort finding, more proportion of overweight and obese groups of Korean subjects reported that they tend to eat more when they are alone than normal and underweight groups. This difference was not found in the overweight Japanese subjects. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed cross-cultural variations of perceptions and practices of commensality and solo-eating in a non-western setting.

  • Business organizations suffer from transferring information technology(IT) into practice. If the problem is solely an technical issue, the strategy to solve the problem is assumed to be identical regardless of the cultural differences of the organizations. Many studies, however, indicated that the cultural differences between organizations were attributed to the differences of championing behaviors in the organizations. The study develops the cultural model of IT transfer from well developed countries to the less developed countries. It is assumed that the outcomes of IT systems are affected by the cultural sets, technology acculturation, and national technology infrastructure. This study examines the effects of cultural sets and technology acculturation on the outcome of IT systems, however. The analysis results show that technological acculturation has strong relationship with the individual IT outcomes and the cultural sets. The cultural sets, however, did not show any significant relation with the individual IT outcomes in the context of the structural model even though the correlation between the cultural sets and the IT outcomes were relatively high. Thus, kit is considered that the interaction between the technological acculturation and the cultural sets might interfere the relations.

한국의 육식문화 (Meat Eating Practice in Korea)

  • Koryo Dynasty has greatly effected the meat eating practice in Korea. And by focusing on this period, this paper has in vestigated how this practice influenced and effected our meat eating culture. The 'Orders to Prohibit Butchery' written on Koryo's history books were to encourage stockbreeding rather than to follow the Buddhist policy they followed. By encouraging stockbreeding, they wanted to promote the usage of cattle in farming and thus increasing agriculture industry as a whole. Nonetheless, records show that hunting was permitted to a certain degree. And this allowed the civilians to depend their meat supply from hunting and for the fire field farmers to capture wild animals that harmed their crops. Moreover, through 'Kiwujae' (Kiwujae - a shamans service to pray for rain / ritual (praying) for rain.), we could see that earlier part of Karyo's rituals and ceremonies followed the Buddhist tradition while the latter followed the Shamanism tradition. Perhaps this was the result of allowing 'meat' for the service offerings. As Shamanism could be considered as a religion that allowed 'meat', prevalence of Shamanism was promoting meat-eating at mess(after these rituals and ceremonies that offered food (meat inclusive) to their guardian or god, the civilians would dine together.). In relation, this public eating practice slowed down the progress for storage technique. Therefore, meat-eating was developed through public and mass dining rather than through the form of family or private. On this account, we can safely regard meat-eating practice as a 'public event'. On the other hand, the history of castration is not so long in Korea. And the purpose of such practice was to use the stock for farming rather than to yield high quality meat. It is known that Mongol in Koryo period has greatly influenced meat cooking in Korea. And the exemplary dish is the 'tang' (tang - kind of soup. However less creamy, clearer broth and with more ingredients than soup.). However, the tang we ate in everyday life had the same cooking method as the tang we offered for services. Moreover, since we did not use castrated animals for our offering as the Mongolians, we must not have been greatly influenced by them. But if so, perhaps the influences would have been limited to the nobility.

Values of Infographics for Promoting Cultural Learning Resources and Tourist Attractions: A Case of Patum Village in Thailand

  • Infographics are influential and valuable communication tools for providing information, and can be used for promoting cultural learning resources and cultural tourism destinations. Therefore, this article presents values of using infographics for promoting Patum's culture and tourism in Phrao District, Chiang Mai, Thailand as cultural learning resources and tourist attractions. Employing a research and development approach, this study utilized three distinct instruments: (1) an interview form engaging 40 locals to uncover insights on promoting Patum village, (2) an assessment form evaluated by three arts and design experts, and (3) questionnaires distributed to 92 participants to gauge perceptions and satisfaction. The findings showcased the high quality and appropriateness of the eight infographics. Audiences derived six key values, including acquiring knowledge, fostering the promotion of Patum's culture, festivals, religions and beliefs, deriving aesthetic enjoyment, encouraging cultural tourism, contributing to the education sector, and enhancing comprehension of Patum's history. Participants expressed high satisfaction ($\bar{x}$=4.46) with the infographic use. The developed infographics are usable and valuable information to help audiences recognize Patum cultural learning resources and tourist destinations. They might be further tailored to the recognition of Patum village in the near future, affecting the area's development by increasing local people's incomes through cultural learning resources and tourism activities.

Under the circumstance that issue of cultural diversity and the role of artists which is for city revitalization and sustainability are affect residency program in the midst of highly proceeded globalization that international exchange. Therefore, in the aspect of creative city, a new model is creating by reuse of abandoned industrial facilities and Asia or Eastern country become the subject in residency program management, the issue of cultural diversity is getting more important, programs based on project not just residence are managing. Furthermore, it has inter-country cooperating system in the rage of cultural management. It means that artists' space of creating activity has a new, social role in spontaneously we need to approach to following model in Korea, as well.

A study on multi-cultural family wives adapting to Korean cuisine and dietary patterns

  • With the increase in multi-cultural families, Korea is seeing a rapid increase in immigrated housewives, who are closely related to food culture. However, studies for the diet of multi-cultural families, which is most closely related to our lives have not been sufficiently researched. With this background, this study conducted research for immigrated women nationwide about food cultures to provide the possibility which Korean food culture would be developed harmoniously with various foreign food cultures. In this study, the immigrated women seemed to have adapted to Korean food culture quickly, but they showed differences according to some conditions like countries they are from and the time they have been in Korea. To achieve this, we need to conduct consistent and in depth studies for food cultures in multi-cultural families so that we can make healthy development in food culture, harmonious with traditional Korean culture.
