  • recent times, the monthly rent in the Jongno-gu Historical and Cultural Street in Seoul has rapidly increased, because of the presence of large-scale franchises and the entry of private investment into the traditional and local businesses focusing on Bukchon, Seochon, Insa-dong, and Samcheong-dong. As a result, the business environment for these merchants has worsened, due to the increasing economic burden. In order to maintain the business environment of the merchants, it is necessary to evaluate the potential for establishing a regional commercial area, in order to resolve the problems of the existing commercial areas and to improve the locational, economic, cultural and political environment. Among the factors influencing the satisfaction with the business environment, the merchants in their 30s and 40s placed more emphasis on the traffic accessibility, floating population, store premium and monthly rent than the other age groups. Among the factors influencing the satisfaction with the business environment, the merchants in their 50s placed more emphasis on the cultural organization, artist activities, expansion of community support facilities, and banning of franchises in certain locations than the other age groups. Among the factors influencing the satisfaction with the business environment, the merchants over 60 years old placed more emphasis on the walking accessibility, monthly sales, merchant community, preservation of historical and cultural landscape, and commercial protection of the government than the other age groups.

  • The Historic Cultural Environment Conservation Areas around Chosun Royal Tombs in Gyeonggi Province are larger than those around other Cultural Assets, so more efficient management tools on the Areas should be needed. This study aims to suggest the directions of policy to modify the existing management tools by analyzing the spatial extent and alteration standards of the 12 Historic Cultural Environment Conservation Areas around Chosun Royal Tombs in Gyeonggi Province. The results of this study are as follows: First, in most cases, the spatial extents of the Areas are 500m, but the spatial extents should be precisely classified in Gyeonggi Ordinance of Cultural Assets Protection, and be excluded according to the layout of Protection Areas and roads. And the outside view from the inside is more important in Chosun Royal Tombs, so the areas on the axis of the view must be controled by considering the development density(bulk or height of buildings). Second, the same zoning areas must be classified as the same section of the Area allowing for equity, and Finally, the Current Conditions Permission Criteria should be actualized to take into account the difference between the development densities of zoning araes and the Criteria.

  • It is generally accepted that cultural capital is constructed through cultural environments that facilitate the cultural activities of individuals. Although public libraries foster the cultural environment and support various cultural activities, there is controversy about whether public libraries still affect the formation of cultural capital in the current evolved cultural environment. This research empirically verified the roles of public libraries in the formation of cultural capital by conducting a survey targeting public library users. As a result, public libraries as cultural institutions play an important role in providing opportunities to access and utilize cultural resources and to experience various cultural activities, which are connected to the formation of different types of cultural capital. In addition, public libraries function to close the cultural divide and social disparities by providing equal opportunities to construct cultural capital for community members.

  • This work is for redefining of cultural diversity and suggesting measurement frame by casting light on changing cultural environment according to evolution of digital convergence media. So far, most of studies tend to confuse at using media diversity and cultural diversity and resultingly the concept of cultural diversity is not founded right yet. In communications field, there is a limit to measure cultural diversity which is substantive content because analysis of media diversity is mainly focused on financial measuring and quantitation. Therefore we define digital convergence media culture as metaculture here for analysis of cultural diversity. Additionally, we catagorize and analysis cultural diversity based on this metaculture into pluralism of media activity, diversity of cultural expression, diversity of cultural diffusion and diversity of cultural cognition. These measuration variables of the four categories are factors which can lighten aspects of cultural diversity in digital convergence media environment. Analysis of these factors of the four catagories will suggest a criterion to establish policies to protect cultural diversity. The policy of cultural diversity is to construct a cultural commune in envirnment of meta culture.

  • Damages of wooden cultural heritages caused by various bio-species have been a trend that is increasing on climate change. The decay and bio-damage caused by microbial organisms or insect species are also known to factors of the shape changes and structural problems of wooden cultural heritages. There are so many phenomenons of damage and weathering in wooden cultural heritage for many years and particularly termite can threaten seriously wooden cultural heritage. We investigated with respect to internal and external environment and termite inhabitation around the wooden cultural heritage in Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeju-do. As this investigation results, we confirmed that there were the difference in between resident and non-resident about temperature, humidity, moisture contents of wooden building. Resident building is high temperature but humidity and moisture contents is low and these factors are sources of inhabitation condition change about insects as termites. Now we suggest to carry out in parallel to the target wooden cultural heritage and the surrounding habitat for wooden cultural heritage termite damage investigation. Also with the chemical control methods, we must consider necessary to present eco-friendly control management such as construction of heating facilities, residential status, periodic management.
