In this study, zeolites were synthesized by a fusion and a hydrothermal methods using a coal fly ash and a waste catalyst. The recovery performance of metal ions on the structure property of synthetic zeolites was evaluated as comparing the adsorption kinetics (Lagergen 2nd order model) and isotherm (Langmuir model) of $Co^{2+},\;Ni^{2+}$, and $Cu^{2+}$ ions. The synthetic zeolites (Z-C1 and Z-W5) were similarly assigned to XRD peaks in a reagent grade Na-A zeolite (Z-WK : $Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}\;27.4H_2O$). Adsorption rates of Z-W5 and Z-C1 were in the order of $Cu^{2+}\;>\;Co^{2+}\;>\;Ni^{2+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}\;>\;Cu^{2+}\;>\;Co^{2+}$, respectively. They had influenced upon structure properties of zeolite. Selectivities of metal ions and maximum equilibrium adsorption capacities, $q_{max}$, in Z-C1 and Z-W5 were in the order of $Ni^{2+}$ (127.9 mg/g) > $Cu^{2+}$ (94.7 mg/g) > $Co^{2+}$ (82.6 mg/g) and $Cu^{2+}$ (141.3 mg/g) > $Co^{2+}$ (122.2 mg/g) > $Ni^{2+}$ (87.6 mg/g), respectively. The results show that the synthetic zeolites, Z-C1 and Z-W5, are able to recover metal ions selectively in wastewater.
The adsorption properties of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions were evaluated by using a polysulfone scoria zeolite (PSf-SZ) composite with synthetic zeolite synthesized from Jeju volcanic rocks (scoria). In order to investigate the adsorption properties, various parameters, such as pH, contact time, reaction rate, concentration, and temperature in aqueous solutions, were evaluated by tests carried out in batch experiments. The adsorption capacities of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions increased between pH 2 but achieved equilibrium at pH 4 and above. The adsorption rate increased rapidly up to the initial 24 h, after which it plateaued ; the adsorption rate then sustained at equilibrium from 48 h. The adsorption kinetics of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions were described better by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacities of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions obtained from the Langmuir model were 53.8 mg/g and 84.7 mg/g, respectively. The calculated thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of $Cs^+$ and $Cu^{2+}$ ions on PSf-SZ was feasible, spontaneous and endothermic reaction.
In this study, zeolite (Z-C2) was synthesized using a fusion/hydrothermal method on coal fly ash (FA) discharged from a thermal power plant in the Ulsan area and then analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Z-C2 was characterized in terms of mineralogical composition and morphological analysis. The XRD results showed that its peaks had the characteristics of Na-A zeolite in the range of $2{\theta}$ of 7.18~34.18. The SEM images confirmed that the Na-A zeolite crystals had a chamfered-edge crystal structure almost identical to that of the commercial zeolite. The adsorption kinetics of Cu, Co, Mn and Zn ions by Z-C2 were described better by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model more than by the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm data better than the Freundlich model did. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cu, Co, Mn and Zn ions obtained from the Langmuir model were in the following order : Cu (94.7 mg/g) > Co (77.7 mg/g) > Mn (57.6 mg/g) > Zn (51.1 mg/g). These adsorption capacities are regarded as excellent compared to those of commercial zeolite.
The exhaust gas from vehicle engines and industrial boilers contains considerable amount of harmful nitrogen monoxide(NO) which causes air pollusion and acid rain. To remove NO catalytic reduction processes using Cu ion exchanged ZSM-5 zeolite have been widely studied. In this study, an attempt was made to fabricate Cu/zeolite catalyst by using high energy ball mill. The catalytic performance of ball milled Cu/ZSM-5 zeolites is analyzed and optimum copper contents was determined. The processing variables were reaction temperature and copper contents. Complete removal of NO gas was obtained at the temperature of 553 K on 10wt.% CU/ZSM-5 mechanically alloyed composite powders. Mechanically alloyed CU/ZSM-5 catalyst showed homogeneous distribution of Cu in ZSM-5.
This study was carried out to develop the low-priced adsorbent by synthesizing the zeolite of high CEC with the natural zeolite and examining the ability of this zeolite to adsorb heavy metals. The dominant clay minerals were clinoptilolite and mordenite in natural zeolite, while phillipsite in the synthesized zeolite. Adsorption reaction of Cu and Zn on clays were reached to equilibrium after 1 hr. The amount of adsorption was increased as the concentrations of heavy metals or the initial pH of suspension was increased. The synthesized zeolite adsorbed heavy metals about twice as much as the natural zeolite. The adsorption of heavy metals on the synthesized zeolite was less affected by the initial pH of suspension than that on natural zeolite. At cumulative adsorption, the synthesized zeolite adsorbed much more heavy metals at early three treatments than the natural zeolite did. The amount of desorption by chloride salts was increased as the concentration of chloride salts was increased. The ability of salt to desorb was in the order of NaCl>$CaC1_2$>$AlC1_3$. It is estimated that the ability of the synthesized zeolite to remove heavy metals was better than that of the natural zeolite.

Highly crystalline Cu-ZSM5 was prepared without using organic templates. Several ion exchange treatments between Na$\^$+/ and Cu$\^$2+/ brought about excess loading of copper ions on the ZSM5 zeolite and the resultant zeolite was active for the decomposition of NO. This indicates that the copper ions excessively loaded on the ZSM5 zeolite are effective for the NO decomposition. When oxygen was added to a reactants, the conversion of NO decreased. NO, O$_2$TPD experiments explained that the active sites for NO decomposition and the adsorption sites of O$_2$, were the same. O$_2$, at the surface of ZSM5 zeolite was desorbed incompletely after pretreatment at 500$^{\circ}C$, and CU-ZSM5 pretreated with H$_2$at 500$^{\circ}C$ showed promoted activity at the start of reaction. Thus, it seems clear that O$_2$, adsorbed ai the surface of catalyst inhibits the catalytic activity.

$NH_3$-SCR has high NOx removal efficiency approximately 80~90%. Recently, the copper or iron ion-exchanged zeolite catalysts are widely used as automobile SCR catalysts. In this paper, the effect of the space velocity, temperature of reaction and $NO_2$ addition on the $NH_3$-SCR reaction were studied using various zeolite SCR catalysts. The test was conducted with small sized fresh catalysts in a laboratory fixed-bed flow reactor system using simulated gases. It is found that the activity of the BEA is better than MFI. It seems that three-dimensional framework and a wide pore entrance of BEA enhances the SCR activity. It is also found that low temperature activity of Cu-zeolites was better than Fe-zeolites. Once $NO_2$ was added, the NOx conversion activity of the Cu-zeolite was slightly enhanced, whereas remarkable improvement was achieved by Fe-zeolite.
Objectives: The most commonly detected heavy metals in rocks and soils, including Pb, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and As, are representative pollutants discharged from abandoned mines and have been listed as potential sources of contamination in drinking water. This study focused on increasing the removal efficiency of heavy metals from drinking water resources by surface modification of natural adsorbents to reduce potential health risks. Methods: Iron oxide coating and graft polymerization with zeolites and talc was conducted for bipolar surface modification to increase the combining capacity of heavy metals for their removal from water. The removal efficiency of heavy metals was measured before and after the surface modification. Results: The removal efficiency of Pb, Cu, and Cd by surface modified zeolite showed 100, 92, and 61.5%, respectively, increases compared to 64, 64, and 38% for non-modified zeolite. This implies that bipolar surface modified natural adsorbents have a good potential use in heavy metal removal. The more interesting finding is the removal increase for As, which has both cation and anion characteristics showing 27% removal efficiency where as non-modified zeolite showed only 2% removal. Conclusions: Zeolite is one of the most widely used adsorptive materials in water treatment processes and bipolar surface modification of zeolite increases its applicability in the removal of heavy metals, especially As.

The reaction of sulfur dioxide with cupric oxide supported on zeolite was investigated over a temperature range of $250{\sim}450^{{\circ}C$. After the completion of the $SO_2$ removal reaction, the cupric sulfate produced was regenerated to copper by hydrogen or LPG. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ was improved with temperature increase and with $SO_2$ inlet concentration decrease. The reaction of $SO_2$ with CuO/Zeolite was well explained by the shrinking unreacted core model using first order chemical reaction control and diffusion control. THe reaction rate constant and the effective diffusivity were respectively as follows: 1k (cm/s) = 2.519 exp[-10991 (cal/mol)/RT] $De(cm^2/s) = 2.06 \times 10^{-5} exp[-8380 (cal/mol)/RT]$
Na-A zeolite (Z-Cl) was synthesized from coal fly ash, which is a byproduct of coal combustion for the generation of electricity. The adsorption of $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}ions$ onto Z-C1 was investigated via batch tests over a range of temperatures (303.15 to 323.15 K). The resultant experimental equilibrium data were compared to theoretical values calculated using model equations. With these results, the kinetics and equilibrium parameters of adsorption were calculated using Lagergren and Langmuir-Freundlich models. The adsorption kinetics revealed that the pseudo second-order kinetic mechanism is predominant. The maximum adsorption capacity ($q_{max}$) values were 139.0-197.9 mg $Zn^{2+}$/g and 75.0-105.1 mg $Cu^{2+}/g$. Calculation of the thermodynamic properties revealed that the absorption reactions for both $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ were spontaneous and endothermic. Collectively, these results suggest that the synthesized zeolite, Z-C1, can potentially be used as an adsorbent for metal ion recovery during the treatment of industrial wastewater at high temperatures.
