Sorption characteristics of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn onto Ca- and Na-bentonites were investigated by the batch experiments in the condition of various pHs and concentrations of groundwater major anions (${So_4}^{2-}$ and ($HCO_3$), which can form a complex with heavy metals. The sorption removal of heavy metals steadily increases as pH increases. The sorption capability about heavy metals of both Ca-bentonite and Na-bentonite is in the order of Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd. The effect of pH and selectivity of heavy metals of bentonites were explained by the change of surface charge of bentonite and the speciation of heavy metals. Na-bentonite has a little higher sorption ability about heavy metals than that of Ca-bentonite. A high sorption removal of Pb in 0.1M sulfate solution may be attributed to the precipitation of $PbSo_4$(anglesite). However, sulfate has a slight effect on the sorption of CU, Cd and Zn. More than 99% of heavy metals were removed from the 0.1 M bicarbonate solution. However, the efficiency of sorption removal of heavy metals highly decreases in the bicarbonate solution of $10^{-2}$M to $10^{-4}$M. The speciation and saturation index calculated by the WATEQ4F program indicate that the sorption of anionic complexes such as ${Pb(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cd(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Zn(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cu(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$ and the precipitation of the solid phases such as $PbCO_3$(cerrusite), $ZnCO_3$(smithsonite), $CdCO_3$(obtavite) are involved in sorption removal of heavy metals in bicarbonate solution. The sorption capability about heavy metals of bentonites in the presence of anions shows the following order: Pb>Cu Cd>Zn.
To understand how reactivity between reinforcing nanoparticles and aqueous solution affects electrodeposited Cu thin films, two types of commercialized cerium oxide (ceria, $CeO_2$) nanoparticles were used with copper sulfate electrolyte to form in-situ nanocomposite films. During this process, we observed variation in colors and pH of the electrolyte depending on the manufacturer. Ceria aqueous solution and nickel sulfate ($NiSO_4$) aqueous solutions were also used for comparison. We checked several parameters which could be key factors contributing to the changes, such as the oxidation number of Cu, chemical impurities of ceria nanoparticles, and so on. Oxidation number was checked by salt formation by chemical reaction between $CuSO_4$ solution and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. We observed that the color changed when $H_2SO_4$ was added to the $CuSO_4$ solution. The same effect was obtained when $H_2SO_4$ was mixed with ceria solution; the color of ceria solution changed from white to yellow. However, the color of $NiSO_4$ solution did not show any significant changes. We did observe slight changes in the pH of the solutions in this study. We did not obtain firm evidence to explain the changes observed in this study, but changes in the color of the electrolyte might be caused by interaction of Cu ion and the by-product of ceria. The mechanical properties of the films were examined by nanoindentation, and reaction between ceria and electrolyte presumably affect the mechanical properties of electrodeposited copper films. We also examined their crystal structures and optical properties by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis spectroscopy.

Reaction characteristics of simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx have been investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer and tubular fixed bed reactor using the $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst. Sulfur removal capacity of $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst is largely enhanced above both the temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ and the loading of 6wt% due to the participation of alumina support in a sulfation reaction. The NO reduction efficiency of 8wt% $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst shows the maximum value at $370^{\circ}C$ and then decreases with the increase of reaction temperature due to the oxidation of $NH_3$ gas. The presence of sulfate on the surface of sorbent/catalyst enhances the optimum reaction temperature showing the maximum deNOx efficiency. In the simultaneous removal of SOx and NOx at $250^{\circ}C$. deNOx activity of $CuO/{\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ sorbent/catalyst is rapidly decreased due to the formation of ammonium salts such as $NH_4HSO_4$. In the simultaneous removal reaction of SOx and NOx, the optimum temperature showing the maximum deNOx efficiency increases to $400^{\circ}C$ due to the presence of $SO_2$ gas.
An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of supernormal level of copper (Cu) from different supplementary sources on the performance, cholesterol level in plasma and breast muscle, and accumulation of fat and Cu in broilers. In a 5 wk feeding trial, two hundred forty hatched male broiler chickens were assigned to four dietary treatments: control diet containing 10 mg/kg supplementary Cu, control diet plus 250 mg/kg Cu from $CuSO_4$ ($CuSO_4-250$), control diet plus 125 mg/kg Cu from Cu-methionine chelate (Cu-Met-125), and control diet plus 250 mg/kg Cu from Cu-methionine chelate (Cu-Met-250). Weight gain in Cu-Met-125 treatment and Cu-Met-250 treatment were not different, but they were significantly (p<0.05) greater than that in $CuSO_4-250$ treatment. Plasma total cholesterol and reduced glutathione (GSH) in blood were significantly reduced by supplementation of $CuSO_4-250$, but were not significantly affected by Cu-Met supplementations. Plasma HDL cholesterol, plasma triglycerides and breast muscle cholesterol were not significantly affected by Cu supplementation. $CuSO_4-250$ improved metabolizability of crude fat, which resulted in low abdominal fat pad weight. Cu from Cu-Met was better absorbed and accumulated more in the breast muscle and lesser in the liver compared with Cu from $CuSO_4$.

The copper-zinc(Cu-Zn) nanofiber was prepared by electrospinning method. The Cu/PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) and Zn/PVP precursor solutions were prepared by dissolution of copper sulfate and zinc acetate in methanol, respectively. The PVP was used to control the viscosity of the precursor solutions. The optimized ratio for the Cu/PVP and Zn/PVP nanofibers was determined separately. Then the suitable ratio of the precursor solutions was applied for fabrication of Cu/Zn/PVP nanofiber. For the electrospinning method, the precursor solutions were filled in a syringe. The distance between metallic needle on the syringe and collector was fixed at 16 cm and the voltage was applied on the tip was 13.0 kV. And the as-spun nanofiber was heated at 353K for removal of residual solvent. Then the heated nanofibers were calcined at 973K to decompose PVP. The obtained Cu, Zn, and Cu-Zn nanofibers were investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for the chemical properties, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the morphologies, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to characterize the crystallinity and phase of nanofibers.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of three different copper (Cu) sources (one inorganic and two organics) and levels (0, 50, and 100 mg/kg) on the growth performance, Cu digestibility, fecal mineral excretion, serum mineral concentration, jejunal morphology, and serum biochemical profile of growing pigs. A total of 42 male, growing pigs (31.08 ± 1.82 kg) were randomly assigned to seven treatments consisting of one negative control (0 mg/kg of added Cu level) and treatments with copper sulfate (CuSO4), Cu-amino acid complex (CuAA), and Cu-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoate chelate complex (CuHMB) at 50 and 100 mg/kg each for 28 d. Pigs fed 50 or 100 mg/kg of Cu showed improved (p < 0.05) average daily gain and feed intake. Although Cu excretion decreased (p < 0.01) in pigs fed 100 mg/kg of organic Cu sources compared to those fed CuSO4, there was no difference between the Cu sources in pigs fed 50 mg/kg. However, the apparent total tract digestibility of Cu increased (p < 0.01) in pigs fed organic Cu sources compared with that in pigs fed CuSO4. The addition of CuHMB increased (p < 0.01) serum phosphorus and sulfur concentrations; however, there were no effects of source and level on jejunal morphology and serum biochemical profile. These results suggest that the inclusion (50 mg/kg) of organic Cu sources (CuAA and CuHMB) in the growing pig diet could be beneficial for growth performance and Cu availability and may reduce environmental pollution.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has been a serious environmental issue that threatens soil and aquatic ecosystems. In this study, an acid-tolerant sulfate-reducing bacterium, strain S4, was isolated from the mud of an AMD storage pond in Vietnam via enrichment in anoxic mineral medium at pH 5. Comparative analyses of sequences of the 16S rRNA gene and dsrB gene involved in sulfate reduction revealed that the isolate belonged to the genus Desulfovibrio, and is most closely related to Desulfovibrio oxamicus (with 99% homology in 16S rDNA sequence and 98% homology in dsrB gene sequence). Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analyses of dsrB gene showed that strain S4 represented one of the two most abundant groups developed in the enrichment culture. Notably, strain S4 was capable of reducing sulfate in low pH environments (from 2 and above), and resistance to extremely high concentration of heavy metals (Fe 3,000 mg/l, Zn 100 mg/l, Cu 100 mg/l). In a batch incubation experiment in synthetic AMD with pH 3.5, strain S4 showed strong effects in facilitating growth of a neutrophilic, metal sensitive Desulfovibrio sp. strain SR4H, which was not capable of growing alone in such an environment. Thus, it is postulated that under extreme conditions such as an AMD environment, acid- and metal-tolerant sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-like strain S4 would facilitate the growth of other widely distributed SRB by starting to reduce sulfate at low pH, thus increasing pH and lowering the metal concentration in the environment. Owing to such unique physiological characteristics, strain S4 shows great potential for application in sustainable remediation of AMD.
Silk fabrics were dyed by Cochineal extracts after mordanted with various mordants and their properties of dyeing, fastness and change of surface color were investigated. Silk fabrics were mordanted with aluminum potassium sulfate, copper acetate, tin chloride, iron sulfate or chromium potassium sulfate at $60^\circ{C}$ for 30 minutes and subsequently dyed at $60^\circ{C}$ for 60 minutes unless mentioned otherwise. The dye-uptake of silk fabrics increased with the concentration of Cochineal extracts and mordants used. Maximum dye-uptake was obtained at pH 3.5-4, regardless of the type of mordants used. Surface color of silk fabrics changed from red purple to purple when mordanted with Al or Cu mordant, from purple to purple blue with Fe mordant and showed red purple with Sn or Cr mordant, respectively. It also changed according to pH of dyeing bath. Dyed silk fabrics showed poor light fastness but good dry-cleaning, perspiration and rubbing fastness.

As a substitute for CCA, which is inhibited due to its environmental pollution and human harmfulness, and CuAz and ACQ with a high cost, okara-based wood preservatives were formulated with okara hydrolyzates using copper sulfate and/or borax as a metal salt. The efficacy of the preservatives and X-ray microanalysis of wood specimens treated with the preservatives were examined to confirm the potential of the okara-based wood preservatives. Most of the preservatives showed excellent decay resistance against brown-rot fungi, Postia placenta and Gloeophyllum trabeum. The efficacy was improved when the acid concentration and temperature used for the hydrolysis of okara increased. In addition, when borax was added into copper sulfate/okara hydrolyzates preservative formulations, any decay was not found in the specimens. From the microscopic observation of the specimens treated with okara-based wood preservatives, it seems that okara is contributed to the fixing of metal salts in wood blocks. Therefore, it is speculated that okara-based wood preservatives can effectively protect wood against fungal attack as CuAz, and that the preservatives are sufficient to use as an alternative wood preservative of CCA, ACQ and CuAz.

Metal nano-wire arrays on Cu-coated seed layers were fabricated by aqueous solution method using sulfate bath at room temperature. The seed layers were coated on Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) bottom substrates by electrochemical deposition technique, length and diameter of metal nano-wires were dominated by controlling the deposition parameters, such as deposition potential and time, electrolyte temperature. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) was used as a template to prepare highly ordered Ni, Fe, Co and Cu multilayer magnetic nano-wire arrays. This template was fabricated with two-step anodizing method, using dissimilar solutions for Al anodizing. The pore of anodic aluminum oxide templates were perfectly hexagonal arranged pore domains. The ordered Ni, Fe, Co and Cu systems nano-wire arrays were characterized by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). The ordered Ni, Fe, Co and Cu systems nano-wires had different preferred orientation. In addition, these nano-wires showed different magnetization properties under the electrodepositing conditions.
