Metal ions have an adverse effect on anaerobic digestion. In an acetate degradation test of upflow of anaerobic sludge blanket granules with $Cu^{2+}$, not all of the acetate that disappeared was stoichiometrically converted to methane. In the presence of 400 mg/g-VSS (volatile suspended solids) $Cu^{2+}$, only 26% of the acetate consumed was converted to methane. To study acetate conversion by other anaerobic microorganisms, sulfate and nitrate reductions were investigated in the presence of $Cu^{2+}$ Sulfate and nitrate reductions exhibited more resistance to $Cu^{2+}$than methanogenesis, and the granules reduced 2.2 mM and 5.4 mM of nitrate and sulfate, respectively, in the presence of 400 mg/g-VSS copper ion. However, the acetate degraded by sulfate and nitrate reductions was only 24% of the missing acetate that could have been stoichiometrically converted to $CO_2$. Accordingly, 76% of the acetate consumed appeared to have been converted to other unknown compounds.
Microbiological sulfate reduction is the transformation of sulfate to sulfide catalyzed by the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria using sulfate as an electron acceptor. Low solubility of metal sulfides leads to precipitation of the sulfides in solution. The effects of microbiological sulfate reduction on in-situ precipitation of arsenic and copper were investigated for the heavy metal-contaminated soil around the Songcheon Au-Ag mine site. Total concentrations of As, Cu, and Pb were 1,311 mg/kg, 146 mg/kg, and 294 mg/kg, respectively, after aqua regia digestion. In batch-type experiments, indigenous sulfate-reducing bacteria rapidly decreased sulfate concentration and redox potential and led to substantial removal of dissolved As and Cu from solution. Optimal concentrations of carbon source and sulfate for effective microbial sulfate reduction were 0.2~0.5% (w/v) and 100~200 mg/L, respectively. More than 98% of injected As and Cu were removed in the effluents from both microbial and chemical columns designed for metal sulfides to be precipitated. However, after the injection of oxygen-rich solution, the microbial column showed the enhanced long-term stability of in-situ precipitated metals when compared with the chemical column which showed immediate increase in dissolved As and Cu due to oxidative dissolution of the sulfides. Black precipitates formed in the microbial column during the experiments and were identified as iron sulfide and copper sulfide. Arsenic was observed to be adsorbed on surface of iron sulfide precipitate.
The title compound, $\{H_2NCH_2CH_2NH_2CH_2CH_2\}\{Cu(H_2O)_6\}(SO_4)_2$, I, has been synthesized under solvo/hydrothermal conditions and their crystal structure analyzed by X-ray single crystallography. Compound I crystallizes in the monoclinic system, $P2_1/n$ space group with a = 6.852(1), b = 10.160(2), $c=11.893(1){\AA}$, ${\beta}=92.928(8)^{\circ}$, $V=826.9(2){\AA}^3$, Z = 2, $D_x=1.815g/cm^3$, $R_1=0.031$ and ${\omega}R_2=0.084$. The crystal structure of the piperazine templated Cu(II)-sulfate demonstrate zero-dimensional compound constituted by doubly protonated piperazine cations, hexahydrated copper cations and sulfate anions. The central Cu atom has a elongated octahedral coordination geometry. The crystal structure is stabilized by three-dimensional networks of the intermolecular $O_{water}-H{\cdots}O_{sulfate}$ and $N_{pip}-H{\cdots}O_{sulfate}$ hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and sulfate anions and protonated piperazine cations. Based on the results of thermal analysis, the thermal decomposition reaction of compound I was analyzed to have three distinctive stages.
The effects of microbial iron reduction and oxidation on the immobilization and mobilization of copper were investigated in a high concentration of sulfate with synthesized Fe(III) minerals and red earth soils rich in amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides. Batch microcosm experiments showed that red earth soil inoculated with subsurface sediments had a faster Fe(III) bioreduction rate than pure amorphous Fe(III) minerals and resulted in quicker immobilization of Cu in the aqueous fraction. Coinciding with the decrease of aqueous Cu, $SO_4{^{2-}}$ in the inoculated red earth soil decreased acutely after incubation. The shift in the microbial community composite in the inoculated soil was analyzed through denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Results revealed the potential cooperative effect of microbial Fe(III) reduction and sulfate reduction on copper immobilization. After exposure to air for 144 h, more than 50% of the immobilized Cu was remobilized from the anaerobic matrices; aqueous sulfate increased significantly. Sequential extraction analysis demonstrated that the organic matter/sulfide-bound Cu increased by 52% after anaerobic incubation relative to the abiotic treatment but decreased by 32% after oxidation, indicating the generation and oxidation of Cu-sulfide coprecipitates in the inoculated red earth soil. These findings suggest that the immobilization of copper could be enhanced by mediating microbial Fe(III) reduction with sulfate reduction under anaerobic conditions. The findings have an important implication for bioremediation in Cu-contaminated and Fe-rich soils, especially in acid-mine-drainage-affected sites.

The effect of Arsenic in copper-sulfate solutions during electrorefining of copper was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and cyclic voltammetry analysis. Electrodeposition was carried out using Arsenic, Antimony and bismuth addition to sulfate electrolytes: 45 g/l $Cu^{2+}$ and 170 g/l $H_2SO_4$. Arsenic in sulfate electrolytes changed the morphology and structure of the copper deposits as compared with those obtained from impurity free solutions. When arsenic was present in the sulfate electrolytes, $Cu-3$As intermetallic phase was formed locally on the deposits.
The sensitivity of a mehtanogen and sulfate-reducing bacterium isolated from a sea-based landfill site Cd$^{2+}$ and CU$^{2+}$ was studied. Methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria in leachates of the waste disposal site were enumerated using the MPN method. Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum KHT, isolated from the leachate, could not grow at 0.5 mM Cd$^{2+}$ or 1.0 mM CU$^{2+}$. Desulfotomaculum sp. RHT, isolated from the same leachate, was able to insolubilization 3.0 mM Cd$^{2+}$ or 2.0 mM CU$^{2+}$ by production of hydrogen sulfide. When strains KHT and RHT were cultured together in the presence of the heavy metals, strain KHT could grow at high heavy metal concentrations after insolubilization of the metals by strain RHT. strain RHT.

Copper is an essential mineral for pigs, thus it is used as a feed additive in the forms of copper sulfate. Therefore, this study aimed at characterizing the fecal microbiota shifts in pigs as fed by different forms of copper supplementation. 40 growing pigs aged 73 ± 1 days with an average weight of 30.22 ± 1.92kg were randomly divided into 5 groups. The control group (CON) fed with basal diet, while treatment groups were fed a basal diet supplemented with 100 ppm/kg of copper sulfate (CuSO4), Cu-glycine complex (CuGly), Cu-amino acid complex (CuAA), and Cu-hydroxy(4methylthio)butanoate chelate complex (CuHMB) for 28 days of trial, respectively. The data presented the comparison between inorganic and organic copper supplementation through gut microbiota in growing pigs. Alpha and Beta diversity anaylsis resulted in copper supplementation did shifted gut microbioal community structure. At the phylum level, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the most abundant phyla at all times regardless of treatment. At the genus level, the relative abundances of Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Megasphaera, and SMB53 of the CuGly and CuHMB groups were significantly higher than those of copper sulfate and basal diet groups. Overall, this study may provide the potential role of organic copper replacing inorganic copper, resulting in increased beneficial bacteria in the pig gut.
Wood-inorganic material composite (WIC) was prepared by impregnating wood with copper sulfate ($CuSO_4\;5H_2O$) solution and by immersed wood in sodium carbonate($Na_2CO_3$) solution in order to introduce insoluble copper compounds {copper carbonate hydroxide, $CuCO_3\;Cu(OH)_2$} into the wood to give fungicidal effects in treated-wood. The weight percent gains (WPGs) of treated wood reached maximum value by impregnation of 20% copper sulfate solution and immersion in about 15% sodium carbonate solution for 24 hrs. Inorganic substances were present mainly in the lumina and cross-field pitting of tracheides. These substances were proved to be the insoluble copper carbonate hydroxide against water by the energy dispersive X-ray analyzer in conjunction with a scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDXA). The treated specimens showed high preservative effectiveness because the weight losses were hardly occurred by the fungi degradation test.
The objective of this study is to investigate the removal of heavy metal by using the coprecipitation of barium sulfate. Several parameters governing the efficiency of the coprecipitation method were evaluated by the pH of sample solution, amount of coprecipitant, and addition of sulfide for the removal of As(V), Cd(II), Cr(III), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Hg(II) and Pb(II) metal ions ($10{\mu}g/ml$ each). The coprecipitation was about 80% - 95% only for lead at low pH but under 10% for other ions. The amount of removal was about 95% - 100% for Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu in the all pH range by the addition of sulfide with barium sulfate but As(V) and Cr(III, VI) ions were not affected by the same conditions.

A method of preparation of synthetic ignorgaic coating on copper (patina) has been presented . An Eh--pH diagram was constructed for the present Cu-H2O-SO$_4$ system using the most recently available thermodynamic data. In the path of the patination at room temperature the general behaviour of copper in acidic copper sulfate solutions with potassium chlorate as an oxidizing agent appeared to follow those predictable in this Eh-pH diagram. In the presence 0.05 molar cupric sulfate at a temperature of about 28$^{\circ}C$ a green brochantite (CuSO$_4$$.$3Cu(OH)$_2$) layer was formed on copper sheet in 20 days. In a solution having an initial pH of 3.5 the development of a brochantite coating has been observed to take place in two stages. In the first, a layer of cuprous oxide formed on the copper at a relatively rapid rate. In the ensuing step the outer layer of cuptrite was oxidized at much slower rate to form brochantite. The syntetic coatings appeared to consist of crystal-lites of brochanitite growing perpendicular to the cuprose oxide surface. The outer tips of the -crystallites were reasily broken off and gave to the layer a rather chalky character. Underneath, at the brochantite Cu$_2$O interface, however, the green layers were firmely attached. The effect of reagent concentration , solution agitation , and moderate temperature increase were investigated to improve the quality of coating. So also in a qualitative way were the effect of light.
