  • As the development of alternative energy is required due to the depletion of fossil fuels, interest in the use of hydrogen energy is increasing. Hydrogen is a promising clean energy source with high energy density and can lead to the application of environmentally friendly technologies. However, due to difficulties in production, storage, and transportation that prevent the application of hydrogen-based eco-friendly technology, research on reforming reactions using dimethyl ether (DME) is being conducted. Unlike other hydrocarbons, DME is attracting attention as a hydrogen carrier because it has excellent storage stability and transportability, and there is no C-C bond in the molecule. The reaction between DME and steam is one of the reforming processes with the highest hydrogen yield in theory at a temperature lower than that of other hydrocarbons. In this study, a hydrogen reforming device using DME was developed and a catalyst prepared by supporting Cu in alumina was put into a reactor to find optimal hydrogen production conditions for supplying hydrogen to fuel cells while changing reaction temperature (300-500℃), pressure (5-10 bar), and steam/carbon ratio (3:1 to 5:1).

  • The activities of Au-modified Cu electrodes toward glucose oxidation are evaluated according to their fabrication conditions and physico-chemical properties. The Au-modified Cu electrodes are fabricated by the galvanic displacement of Au on a Cu substrate and the characteristics of the Au particles are controlled by adjusting the displacement time. From the glucose oxidation tests, it is found that the Au modified Cu has superior activity to the pure Au or Cu film, which is evidenced by the negative shift in the oxidation potential and enhanced current density during the electrochemical oxidation. Though the activity of the Au nanoparticles is a contributing factor, the enhanced activity of the Au-modified Cu electrode is due to the increased oxidation number of Cu through the electron transfer from Cu to more electronegative Au. The depletion of electron in Cu facilitates the oxidation of glucose. The stability of the Au-modified Cu electrode was also studied by chronoamperometry.

  • Catalytic synthesis and properties of ${\beta}-Ga_2O_3$ nanowires grown by metal organic chemical vapor deposition are reported. Au, Ni and Cu catalysts were suitable for the growth of $Ga_2O_3$ nanowires under our experimental conditions. The $Ga_2O_3$ nanowires grown by using Au, Ni and Cu catalysts showed different growth rates and morphologies in each case. We found the $Ga_2O_3$ nanowires were grown by the Vapor-Solid (VS) process when Ni was used as a catalyst while the Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) was a dominant process in case of Au and Cu catalysts. Also, we found nanowires showed different optical properties depend on catalytic metals. On the other hand, for the cases of Ti, Sn and Ag catalysts, nanowires could not be obtained under the same condition of Au, Cu and Ni catalytic synthesis. We found that these results are related to the different characteristics of each catalyst, such as, melting points and phase diagrams with gallium metal.

  • The non-noble 1D nanofibers(NFs) prepared by electrospinning and calcination method were used as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst for water electrolysis. The electrospinning process and rate of solution composition was optimized to prepare uniform and non-beaded PVP polymer electrospun NFs. The diameter and morphology of PVP NFs changed in accordance with the viscosity and ion conductivity. The clean metal precursor contained electrospun fibers were synthesized via the optimized electrospinning process and solution composition. The calcined $CuCo_2O_4$ NFs catalyst showed higher activity and long-term cycle stability for OER compared with other $Co_3O_4$, $NiCo_2O$ NF catalysts. Furthermore, the $CuCo_2O_4$ NFs maintained the OER activity during long-term cycle test compared with commercial $CuCo_2O_4$ nanoparticle catalyst due to unique physicochemical and electrochemical properties by1D nanostructure.

  • In this study, performance evaluation of newly developed technology for the economical and safe removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) coming out from electronic devices washing operation and offensive odor induction materials was made. Metal oxidization catalyst has shown 50% of removal efficiency at the temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. Composite metal oxidization catalyst applied in this study has shown that the actual catalysis has started at the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. Comprehensive analysis on the catalyst property using Mn-Cu metal oxidization catalyst in the pilot-scale unit was made and the removal efficiency was variable with temperature and space velocity. Full-scale unit developed based on the pilot-scale unit operation has shown 95% of removal efficiency at the temperature of $160^{\circ}C$. Optimum elimination effective rates for the space velocity was found to be $6,000hr^{-1}$. The most appropriate processing treatment range for the inflow concentration of VOCs was between 200 ppm to 4,000 ppm. Catalyst control temperature showed high destruction efficiency at $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ degrees Celsius in 90~99%. External heat source was not necessary due to the self-heat reaction incase of VOCs inflow concentration is more than 1,000 ppm. Equipment and fuel costs compared to the conventional RTO/RCO method can be reduced by 50% and 75% respectively. And it was checked when there was poisoning for sulfide and acid gas.

  • Dimethyl ether(DME) was synthesized from synthesis gas by a one-step process in which a hybrid catalyst was used. The hybrid catalyst consisted of Cu-ZnO-$Al_2O_3$ for the methanol synthesis reaction and aluminum phosphate or $H_3PO_4$-modified $\gamma$-alumina for the methanol dehydration reaction. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, SEM, FT-IR and $NH_3$-TPD. From the XRD analysis, it was verified that the aluminum phosphate was successfully synthesized. The specific surface areas of the synthesized aluminum phosphates were varied with the ratio of P/Al. The hybrid catalyst in which P/Al ratio of the aluminum phosphate was 1.2 showed the highest CO conversion of 55% and DME selectivity of 70%. There was no remarkable decrease in catalytic activity with the phosphoric acid treatment of $\gamma$-alumina. However, when treated with concentrated phosphoric acid(85%), the catalytic activity and DME selectivity decreased.

  • In this study, we report on the catalyst process installed in conjunction with a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator to remove the oil mist and fine dust emitted from large-size grill restaurants. The multi-stage catalyst module reduced odor through catalytic reaction of acetaldehyde on catalysts even at an ambient temperature with ozone as an oxidant readily produced in a wet plasma electrostatic precipitator. Two types of manganese-based catalysts, $Mn_2O_3$ and $CuMnO_x$ were fabricated by extrusion molding for structured catalysts in practical applications, and the optimum conditions for high removal efficiencies of acetaldehyde and ozone were determined. When two optimized catalysts were applied in a two-stage catalyst module, the removal efficiency of acetaldehyde and ozone were ${\geq}85%$ and 100% respectively at the space velocity of $10,000h^{-1}$ and the reaction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$.

  • Electrochemical reduction of thionyl chloride in 1.5 M $LiAlCl_4/SOCl_2$ electrolyte solution containing tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Mn(II) complexes has been investigated at the glassy carbon electrode. The catalyst molecules of transition metal(II) complexes were adsorbed on the electrode surface and reduced thionyl chloride resulting in a generation of oxidized catalyst molecules. There was an optimum concentration for each catalyst compound. The current density of $SOCl_2$ reduction was enhanced up to 150% at the catalyst contained electrolyte solution. The reduction currents of thionyl chloride were increased and the reduction potentials were shifted to the negative potential as scan rates became faster. The reduction of thionyl chloride was proceeded to diffusion controlled reaction.

  • It is important to study hydrazine because of the development of new uses for its derivatives. The Rasching method is the only satisfactory one for synthesizing hydrazine; it involves the oxidation of ammonia by sodium hypochlorite in the presence of some such catalyst as gelatin. Calcium hypochlorite was substituted for the sodium hypochlorite particularly in this work, applying agar-agar as catalyst. The results of the experiments are as follow: 1. The yield is proportional to the mole-ratio of ammonia to available chlorine in calcium hypochlorite and about 60% is obtained when the ratio is 20. 2. Agar-agar can be used as a catalyst and its proper concentration in the solution is 0.005%. 3. Proper concentration of available chlorine in the reaction solution is 0.23 mole/l. 4. The most effective condition for the reaction is a temperature of $60{\sim}65^{\circ}C.$ maintained for $20{\sim}25min$. 5. The reaction takes place equally well in either an open or closed container. 6. When calcium hypochlorite is applied in place of sodium hypochlorite, the yield of hydrazine is increased as much as 17%. 7. The yield of hydrazine is decreased by eliminating the suspension of $Ca(OH)_2$ which results from the use of calcium hypochlorite. 8. When $Ca(OH)_2$ is added to Rasching process, the yield of hydrazine is raised normally. 9. The fact that some metal ions, such as $Cu^{++},$ inhibit the formation of hydrazine was proved. 10. The suspension of $Ca(OH)_2$ acted as a remarkable adsorbent for $Cu^{++}$ like gelatin. The suspension of $Ca(OH)_2$ which results from the use of calcium hypochlorite acts as a catalyst, absorbing metal ions, to increase the yield of hydrazine. So I think that calcium hypochlorite is a more efficient oxidant than sodium hypochlorite in hydrazine syntheses.

  • To remove NO from flue gas, a direct decomposition method to $N_2$ and $O_2$ was investigated by using copper / zeolite catalyst. The copper ion-exchanged HY type zeolite has high activity on NO decomposition. The decomposition activity was increased with the increase of ion-exchange level, contacting time and reaction temperature in the range of 30$0^{\circ}C$ -50$0^{\circ}C$ , and decreased with the oxygen addition.
