  • Chalcopyrite-type Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) is one of the most attractive compound semiconductor materials for thin film solar cells. Among various approaches to prepare the CIGS thin film, the powder process offers an extremely simple and materials-efficient method. Here, we present the mechano-chemical synthesis of CIGS compound powders and their use as an ink material for screen-printing. During the synthesis process, milling time and speed were varied in the range of 10~600 min and 100~300 rpm, respectively. Both phase evolution and powder characteristics were carefully monitored by X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, and particle size analysis by scanning mobility particle spectrometer (SMPS) and aerodynamic particle sizer (APS). We found the optimal milling condition as 200 rpm for 120 min but also found that a monolithic phase of CIGS powders without severe particle aggregation was difficult to be obtained by the mechano-chemical milling alone. Therefore, the optimized milling condition was combined with an adequate heat-treatment (300oC for 60 min) to provide the monolithic CIGS powder of a single phase with affordable particle characteristics for the preparation of CIGS thin film. The powder was used to prepare an ink for screen printing with which dense CIGS thin films were fabricated under the controlled selenization. The morphology and electrical properties of the thin films were analyzed by SEM images and hall measurement, respectively.

  • Dispersion-strengthened copper with $TiB_2$ was produced by ball-milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS).Ball-milling was performed at a rotation speed of 300rpm for 30 and 60min in Ar atmosphere by using a planetary ball mill (AGO-2). Spark-plasma sintering was carried out at $650^{\circ}C$ for 5min under vacuum after mechanical alloying. The hardness of the specimens sintered using powder ball milled for 60min at 300rpm increased from 16.0 to 61.8 HRB than that of specimen using powder mixed with a turbular mixer, while the electrical conductivity varied from 93.40% to 83.34%IACS. In the case of milled powder, hardness increased as milling time increased, while the electrical conductivity decreased. On the other hand, hardness decreased with increasing sintering temperature, but the electrical conductiviey increased slightly

  • Conventional manufacturing process for cast iron-babbitt metal composite is complicate and bimetallic bonding by centrifugal casting is also difficult because their melting point is largely different and nonmetallic inclusion exists on outer shell. This study is aiming to simplify multistage process by adding Cu-powder as insert metals during cast iron solidification. The variables on fabrication of composite pipe are mold rotating speed and inner surface temperature of outer metal. The optimum temperature range for fusion bonding between cast iron and Cu-layer was $1100^{\circ}C-1140^{\circ}C$ in case of mold rotating speed was 700rpm. When the inner surface of Cu-layer was at $900^{\circ}C$, the value of interfacial hardness between Cu-layer and babbitt metal were higher than Cu-matrix by forming diffusion layer, interfacial products between Cu-layer and babbitt metal are proved to be $Cu_6Sn_5({\eta})$by XRD.

  • Two different anode composite materials comprising of Fe, Cu and Si prepared using high energy ball milling (HEBM) were explored for their capacity and cycling behaviors. Prepared powder composites in the ratio Cu:Fe:Si = 1:1:2.5 and 1:1:3.5 were characterized through X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Nevertheless, the XRD shows absence of any new alloy/compound formation upon ball milling, the elements present in Cu(1)Fe(1)Si(2.5)/Graphite composite along with insito generated Li2O demonstrate a superior anodic behavior and delivers a reversible capacity of 340 mAh/g with a high coulombic efficiency (98%). The higher silicon content Cu(1)Fe(1)Si(3.5) along with graphite could not sustain capacity with cycling possibly due to ineffective buffer action of the anode constituents.

  • Sodium substituted samples of $Y_{1-x}Na_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ for $0.00{\leq}x{\leq}0.16$ were prepared and characterized by X-ray powder pattern, electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and idometric titration. The Na substituted compounds have narrow solid solution limits where $0.00{\leq}x{\leq}0.16.$ As the Na concentration increases, the parent orthorhombic structure tends to gradually change to tetragonal. Small changes in the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, are observed in this solid solution region. Raman spectra for the Na phases are virtually identical with that of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$ except that the Cu(1)-O(4) stretching mode at 504 $cm^{-1}$ and the Cu(2)-O(2,3) bending mode at 340 $cm^{-1}$ for x = 0.16 are slightly shifted. The hole concentrations of the sodium substituted compounds ranged from 0.31 to 0.33 per Cu site are increased with Na content. The substitution of $Na^+$ for $Y^{3+}$ site appears to create oxygen vacancies in the Cu-O chains, causes structural change from orthorhombic to tetragonal, and increases hole concentration in the substituted system.

  • Methane is partially oxidized to produce the syngas by the lattice oxygen of metal oxides in the absence of gaseous oxygen. The present work deals with ferrite including copper component, which does not chemisorb methane, to investigate the suppression of the carbon deposition during the reduction of metal oxides by methane. Iron-based oxides of $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$(X=0.25, 0.5, 1.0) was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Thermogravimetric Analysis(TGA) was used to observe the isothermal reduction behavior of $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4$ at $600-900^{\circ}C$ under methane atmosphere. The crystal structures of reduced specimens were characterized by X-rays powder diffraction(XRD) technique. From the analyses of TGA, it is concluded that the reduction kinetics of $CuFe_2O_4$ was the fastest among $Fe_3O_4$ and $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$(X=0.25, 0.5, 1.0). The X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ was decomposed to Cu and $Fe_3O_4$ phase at $600^{\circ}C$ and was reduced to Cu and Fe phase at $800^{\circ}C$. $Fe_3O_4$, which was reduced at $900^{\circ}C$, showed Fe, graphite and $Fe_3C$ phases. On the contrary, $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ does not show the graphite or $Fe_3C$ phases. This results infer that Cu component suppress the carbon deposition on Cu-ferrite.

  • Cu based amorphous ($Cu_{54}Zr_{22}Ti_{18}Ni_6$) coating was produced by cold spraying as a new fabrication process. The microstructure and macroscopic properties of amorphous coating layer was investigated and compared with those of cold sprayed pure Cu coating. Amorphous powders were prepared by gas atomization and Al 6061 was used as the substrate plate. X-ray diffraction results showed that Cu based amorphous powder could be successfully deposited by cold spraying without any crystallization. The Cu based amorphous coating layer ($300{\sim}400{\mu}m$ thickness) contained 4.87% porosity. The hardness of Cu based amorphous coating represented $412.8H_v$, which was correspond to 68% of the hardness of injection casted bulk amorphous material. The wear resistance of Cu based amorphous coating was found to be three times higher than that of pure Cu coating. The 3-point bending test results showed that the adhesion strength of Cu based amorphous coating layer was higher than that pure Cu coating. It was also observed that hard Cu base amorphous particle could easily deform soft substrate by particle collisions and thus generated strong adhesion between coating and substrate. However, the amorphous coating layer unexpectedly represented lower corrosion resistance than pure Cu coating, which might be resulted from the higher content of porosity in the cold sprayed amorphous coating.

  • This study presented the effect of membrane thickness on hydrogen permeability. Microvoids on the surface of the membrane should not exist for the exact values of hydrogen permeability. Pd-Cu-Ni hydrogen alloy membranes were fabricated by Ni powder sintering, substrate plasma pretreatment, sputtering and Cu reflow process. And this leaded to void-free surface and dense film of Pd-Cu-Ni hydrogen alloy membrane. Hydrogen permeation test showed that hydrogen permeability increased from 2.7 to $15.2ml/cm^2{\cdot}min{\cdot}atm^{0.5}$ as membrane thickness decreased from 12 to $4{\mu}m$. This represented the similar trend as a hydrogen permeability of pure palladium membrane based on solution-diffusion mechanism.
