The Crystallization Kinetics of CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 Glass System Using Thermal Analysis (열분석을 이용한 CaO-MgO-Al$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$의 결정화 기구의 연구)

  • Some of non-isothermal analysis methods are applied to CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glass system to find the kinetics parameters of crystallisation, activation energy, Avrami component and frequency factor. The results using the non-isothermal analysis were compared to that of microstructure experiment. Analysis of the result has enabled to some methods to be to recommend as being the most appropriate equation to use in a glass system. It was shown that in the thermal analysis using the non-isothermal method of Kissinger, Augis-Bennett, Bansal, and Marotta, the calculation of activation energy is not much different, while Avrami component and frequency factor are different from applied each methods.

  • The growth mechanism of AMT(Ammonium Meta-Tungstate) crystal was interpreted as two-step model. The contribution of the diffusion step increased with the increase of temperature, crystal size, and supersaturation. The crystal size distribution from a batch cooling crystallizer was predicted by the numerical solution of a mathematical model which uses the kinetics of nucleation and crystal growth. Temperature control of a batch crystallizer was studied using Learning control algorithm. The purity of AMT crystal producted in this investigation was above 99.99%.

A Study of Crystallization and Fracture Toughness of Glass Ceramics in the ZrO2·SiO2 Systems Prepared by the Sol-Gel Method (졸-겔법으로 제조한 ZrO2·SiO2계 결정화 유리의 결정화 및 파괴인성에 관한 연구)

  • Precursor gels with the composition of $xZrO_2{\cdot}(100-x)SiO_2$ systems (x=10, 20 and 30 mol%) were prepared by the sol-gel method. Kinetic parameters, such as activation energy, Avrami's exponent, n, and dimensionality crystal growth value, m, have been simultaneously calculated from the DTA data using Kissinger and Matusita equations. The crystallite size dependence on tetragonal to monoclinic transformation of $ZrO_2$ was investigated using XRD, in relation to the fracture toughness. The crystallization of tetragonal $ZrO_2$ occurred through 3-dimensional diffusion controlled growth(n=m=2) and the activation energy for crystallization was calculated using Kissinger and Matusita equations, as about $310{\sim}325{\pm}10kJ/mol$. The growth of $t-ZrO_2$, in proportion to the cube of radius, increased with increasing heating temperature and heat-treatment time. It was suggested that the diffusion of Zr4+ions by Ostwald ripening was rate-limiting process for the growth of $t-ZrO_2$ crystallite size. The fracture toughness of $xZrO_2{\cdot}(100-x)SiO_2$ systems glass ceramics increased with increasing crystallite size of $t-ZrO_2$. The fracture toughness of $30ZrO_2{\cdot}70SiO_2$ system glass ceramics heated at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 5 h was $4.84Mpam^{1/2}$ at a critical crystaliite size of 40 nm.

  • In the study, the effects of $130{\sim}150^{\circ}C$ annealing condition and 1~10 wt% isopropylphenyl diphenyl phosphate (IPPP) on crystallization behavior and flame retardancy of a full name (PLA) film were determined. The crystallization kinetics of PLA films with adding 1, 5, and 10 wt% IPPP at $140^{\circ}C$ were higher than those at 130 and $150^{\circ}C$. The average crystallinity and crystallite size of PLA film with 1 wt% IPPP were 21.3% and 24.8 nm, respectively. With an increasing IPPP content, the crystallinity of PLA film increased and the crystallite size decreased. The burning rate lowered with an increasing IPPP content as well.

  • The kinetics of crystal growth and nucleation in dependence on the supersaturation of an aqueous solution of 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one(NTO) were evaluated on the draft tube-baffle(DTB) crystallizer operated batchwise. The crystal growth rate is proportional to the supersaturation to the 2.9 power, and the nucleation rate to the 4.2 power. The uncleation behavior for NTO-water system in DTB crystallizer was grasped according to Mersmann's criteria. The nucleation in this crystallizer was found to act with heterogeneous nucleation and surface uncleation simultaneously. Simplified relation was derived for calculation of mean crystal size of product crystals from the batch cooling crystallizer. The obtained relation was verified by a set of experiments.

Assessment of the Struvite Crystallization Process for Phosphate Removal and Recovery from a Sludge Treatment System of a Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant (하수처리장 슬러지처리 계통에서의 인 제거 및 회수를 위한 Struvite 결정화 공정 적용성 평가)

  • Eutrophication and shortage of phosphate ore raise the necessity of phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater treatment plants. Especially, a sludge treatment system containing highly concentrated phosphate should be targeted for phosphate removal and recovery. This study thus aimed to evaluate the capability of the struvite crystallization process for phosphate removal and recovery from a sludge treatment system of a wastewater treatment plant. Analysis on phosphate concentrations and masses in the sludge treatment system revealed that digested sludge and centrate have phosphate concentrations and masses, high enough to adopt the struvite crystallization process. Chemical equilibrium modeling indicated that the struvite crystallization reaction substantially occurred with pH higher than 8 and $Mg^{2+}$ concentration 1.2 times higher than its theoretical requirement. A series of batch tests with digested sludge and centrate indicated that the phosphate removal reaction by struvite crystallization followed a first-order kinetics and reached over 80% removal efficiency at equilibrium. Aeration in the batch tests was found to purge $CO_2$ in sludge or centrate and increase pH up to 8.7, without adding NaOH. Thus, we concluded that the struvite crystallization process could be an efficient and economical process for phosphate removal and recovery from a wastewater treatment plant.

  • Lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT, 6/65/35) powders, crack-free and dense thin films have been prepared by polymeric sol-gel process. Pyrolysis of the gel, crystallization and optical transmittance behavior of the PLZT thin film onto sapphire substrate have been studied. Esterification occurs during synthesis of PLZT complexation. Crystalline Pb phase was transiently formed near 450$^{\circ}C$. Content of perovskite phase in the films were increased with increasing thickness of film, but the kinetics of formation of perovskite phase in films was slower than that of powders. Transmittance of the films was decreased with increasing the temperature of heat treatment. Ferroelectric hysteresis loop measurements indicated increments of remanent polarization and coercive field for plenty more of perovskite phase.

  • The important parts of material science in the film preparation fields and sol-gel technology are presented. For the present work, a series of amorphous films was prepared in air by sol-gel method without using some alkoxide stabilizer, which reduces the reactivity of the metal alkoxides. The choice of precursors can affect the chemical-reaction kinetics, microstructures and properties of the product. In this report author compared the crystallization behavior of oxide functional films derived from the same precursors, stressing the influence of experiment conditions and where it was possible to obtain the uniform amorphous or crystalline dielectric films. A short analysis of sol-gel technology and thin film methods about development of dielectric materials has been given.
