  • Dark field (DF) transmission electron microscopy image has become a popular characterization method for two-dimensional material, graphene, since it can visualize grain structure and multilayer islands, and further provide structural information such as crystal orientation relations, defects, etc. unlike other imaging tools. Here we present microstructure of graphene, particularly, using DF imaging. High-angle grain boundary formation wass observed in heat-treated chemical vapor deposition-grown graphene on the Si substrate using patch-quilted DF imaging processing, which is supposed to occur by strain around multilayer islands. Upon the crystal orientation between layers the multilayer islands were categorized into the oriented one and the twisted one, and their local structure were compared. In addition information from each diffraction spot in selected area diffraction pattern was summarized.

  • Conventional hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal display (HAN-LCD) has several advantages on low operating voltage, fast response time and rubbing free on one substrate. We have fabricated a new hybrid aligned nematic display driven by fringe field. The new device exhibits much wider viewing: angle than that of the conventional HAN mode, owing to almost in-plane rotation of the LC director. Furthermore, we have developed the device that reveals more efficient electro-optic characteristics by placing common electrode on top and bottom substrates. In this paper, the electro-optic characteristics of the novel cell are investigated.

  • In this paper we model the liquid crystal director field in the Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) LC using the fast Q-tensor method, which can model multidimensional director configurations with defects in the liquid crystal director field. We observed the dynamic behaviors of the defect experimentally by applying the voltage and modeled the LC director field with defect in the active area of the PVA cell. As a result, we could also calculate the optical transmittance.

  • Degradation of performance and life time of a functional material or device thereof is induced, to a great extent, by mass transfer in the material that is driven by various thermodynamic forces imposed intentionally or accidentally during its operation or service. The forces are any gradient of intensive thermodynamic variables, component chemical potentials, electrical potential, temperature, stresses, and the like. This paper reviews electric-field induced degradation phenomena in ionic solid compounds including insulation resistance degradation, crystal shift, microstructural alterations, compositional unmixing, and compound decomposition. Their inner workings are also discussed qualitatively.

  • In this paper, we report a novel way to evaluate the anticlinic interlayer coupling coefficient U between smectic layers of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal, by utilizing a small field-induced perturbation of the molecular orientation. U was found to exhibit an unusual "S-shaped" dependence on temperature, with values ranging between $0.4{\times}10^4$ and $0.4{\times}10^{-1}$ erg $cm^{-3}$ over a 10$^{\circ}C$ temperature range below smectic A-smectic $C_A$ phase transition temperature. The results are good agreement with estimates for U based upon the threshold field for the onset of solitary waves, and provide strong supporting the low-field regime for the single Fourier component model.

  • The temporal differential equation describing the build-up of the space-charge field in the presence of square and sinusoidal alternating field in photorefractive materials is solved analytically. We also measured the average two-wave mixing gain and the full temopral gain variations in a B$i_{12}$Si$O_{20}$ crystal with applied fields of up to 7 KV/cm amplitude and 1 KHz repetition rate. It has been found that the experimental measurements agree well with the theoretical results.

  • We report the microwave reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ of copper(II)-phthalocyanine(CuPc) using a near-field microwave microscope(NSMM) in order to understand the intrinsic electromagnetic properties of organic materials. For a NSMM system, a high-quility microstip resonator coupled with a dielectric resonator was used. The reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ was changed by the preparation conditions of CuPc thin films. We compared the reflection coefficient with crystal phase, surface morphology, UV absorption spectra and x-ray diffraction results.

  • To observe the orientation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in nematic liquid crystal (NLC), CNT-doped homogeneously-aligned NLC cells driven by in-plane field was fabricated. The CNTs were aligned with a LC director in the initial state, whereas the CNTs disturbed the LC director above critical ac field. We observed motional textures in the form of vertical stripes in the local area between electrodes, which were associated with a deformation of the LC director orientation. This suggests that CNTs start to vibrate three dimensionally with translational motion. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance under dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNT.

  • We have designed a single gap transflective liquid crystal display (LCD) driven by a fringe electric field, in which the +LC (${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$=7.4, rubbing angle= $80^{\circ}$) is homogeneously aligned in the initial state. This device is a problem that the voltage-dependent transmittance and reflectance curves do not match each other. Thus a dual driving circuit is required. This study shows that optimization of the rubbing angle in the transmissive and reflective regions solves this problem so that the transflective display with a single cell gap and single gamma curve for reflective and transmissive region is possible.

  • Empirical force-field method has been applied to D-sorbitol, the crystal structure of which has been studied by the single crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction analyses. The calculated C-C bond lengths agree with those observed within 0.009${\AA}$. The C-O bond lengths show a larger deviation of 0. 023${\AA}$. The calculated C-C-C and C-C-O valence angles agree with those observed within $2.3^{\circ}$ and $1.9^{\circ}$respectively. Because torsion angles are influenced by packing forces, they show considerably flarger r. m. s. deviations. Calculations of the conformational energies of the model compound at selected C(1)-C(2)-C(3)-C(4) torsion angles made with the program MMI, produced result that the prediction of the observed preferred conformation of the carbon chain appeares to be less satisfactory.
