  • A method was developed to determine resilient modulus for crushed rock-soil mixtures whose usage has been increased recently without engineering specifications. The method is based on the subtle different modulus called nonlinear dynamic modulus and was lately implemented in residual soils and engineered crushed-stones. Hereby. the same method was expanded to crushed rock-soil mixtures containing as large grain diameter as 300mm. The method utilize field direct-arival tests for the determination of maximum Young's modulus, and a large scale free-free resonant column test, which is recently developed to is capable to test as large grain diameter as 25mm, for modulus reduction curves. The prediction model of resilient modulus was evaluated for crushed rock-soil mixtures of a highway construction site at Gimcheon, Korea.

  • This paper investigated the engineering properties of cement mortar mixed with more than 2 kinds of sand. For fresh mortar properties, unit volume weight is constant regardless of mixing content and type of sand. An increase in contents of river and crushed sand resulted in an increase in flow, whereas an increase in recycled sand contents reduced flow. Gap between maximum flow in N3C0R0 and minimum flow in N0C0R3 exhibited about $12\%$. Compressive strength at 28 days ranged from 32 to 36 MPa in order for crushed sand, river sand and recycled sand. Mortar with mixed sand along with river sand and crushed sand showed compressive strength comparable to crushed sand. An increase of fraction of recycled sand in mixed sand resulted in a decrease in compressive strength. For drying shrinkage, N0C0R3 had the largest drying shrinkage among various mixture type. The combination of large contents of recycled sand and small contents of river and crushed sand had a large amount of drying shrinkage.

  • A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the effects of several factors on the phosphorus removal by waste oyster shells. The waste oyster shells used in this experiments were crushed particle, calcined particle and extracted solution. A higher efficiencies of phosphorus removal were observed, when a particle size of crushed and calcined particle were smaller. The effluent concentration of phosphorus was around 1.6mg/ι in continuous column experiment which packed with crushed particle of waste oyster shell at the influent concentration of PO4-P of 10 mg/ι. But the clogging of column occurred with increasing of throughput volume of influent. The efficiency of phosphorus removal increased with increasing of dosage amount of crushed, calcined particle and extracted solution. When the calcined particle which contained only about 1/10~1/100 of crushed particle was used, the efficiency of phosphorus removal was correspondingly equivalent to the removal efficiency obtained from crushed particle. The efficiency of phosphorus removal by calcined particle after 9 runs repeated use was decreased about 21.5% as that of the first run. The removal efficiency of 100% could have been achieved at the HRT of 18 hours during the continuous treatment of phosphorus by the solution extracted from calcined particle.

  • This study investigates the effect of crushed fine aggregate and chemical admixture (durability improvement agent, named DIA) on blast furnace slag-based brick. The control brick was made with recycled fine aggregate of 100% and, no cement was used. Test results showed that all specimens developed similar strength, except for the specimen without partial replacement of crushed fine aggregate at 3 days. However, it is interesting to note that this specimen without crushed fine aggregate resulted in the highest strength at 7 days. In addition, the DIA had a major effect on the absorption ratio of brick specimens. For the brick specimens with partial replacement of crushed fine aggregate with 10%, the addition of DIA with only 1% was enough to satisfy the code regulated by KS F 4004.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effect of various functional materials such as bioceramic podwers, crushed shells and elvanites supplemented to the each substrate on the seedlings growth of cucumber, watermelon and tomato. The seedlings were grown in pots filled with substrates of bioceramic podwers, crushed shell and elvanites. The growth of cucumber seedlings in terms of plant height, stem diameter, leaf width, leaf area, plant fresh and dry weight was promoted by adding the bioceramic. powder (1 to 2g/kg), crushed shells (20 to 80g/kg) or elvanites (20 to 80g/kg). Watermelon seedlings in terms of plant height, number of leaves and leaf area were greater than those of the control by adding bioceramics (1 to 2g/kg). Plant height was also promoted by the adding of bioceramic power from 16 days after treatment. But leaf area was increased from 8 days after treatment, while stem diameter was not affected. Watermelon seedlings were also influenced by adding curshed shells (20 to 80g/kg) and elvanites (20 to 40g/kg) into each substrate. The growth of characteristics of tomato seedlings were promoted by adding 1 to 3g/kg of bioceramics, 10 to 80g/kg of crushed shell or 20 to 40g/kg of elvanites, respectively. Especially, root growth was greatly influenced by bioceramic powder, whereas the shoot growth(leaves and stem) was stimulated by crushed shells and elvanites suppemented into substrate.

  • Recently, trouble of sand supplying is occurred according to exhaustion of natural sand resources. Therefore various measures are proposed for solution of trouble of sand supply and crushed sand among measures is used as one of most universal measures. But because crushed sand have poor particle shape and plenty of makes micro particle, the quality of concrete using crushed sand deteriorated. Therefore, this study evaluated engineering property of concrete with replacement ratio of crushed sand and EEZ sand and applied evaluation result to fundamental data for quality control of concrete using crushed sand and EEZ sand. The result of this study have shown that quality of concrete using crushed sand and EEZ sand and The compressive strength of concrete up to 50, 70% EEZ sand replacement by crush sand, nearly equal to that of general sand.

  • The rheological behaviour of high strength self compacting concrete (HS-SCC) studied through an experimental investigation is presented in this paper. The effect of variation in supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) $vis-{\grave{a}}-vis$ four different types of processed crushed sand as fine aggregates is studied. Apart from the ordinary Portland cement (OPC), the SCMs such as fly ash (FA), ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) ultrafine slag (UFS) and micro-silica (MS) are used in different percentages keeping the mix -paste volume and flow of concrete, constant. The combinations of rheology, strength and durability are equally important for selection of mixes in respect of high-rise building constructions. These combinations are referred to as the rheo-strength and rheo-durability which is scientifically linked to performance based rating. The findings show that the fineness of the sands and types of SCM affects the rheo-strength and rheo-durability performance of HS-SCC. The high amount of fines often seen in fine aggregates contributes to the higher yield stress. Further, the mixes with processed sand is found to offer better rheology as compared to that of mixes made using unwashed crushed sand, washed plaster sand, washed fine natural sand. The micro silica and ultra-fine slag conjunction with washed crushed sand can be a good solution for high rise construction in terms of rheo-strength and rheo-durability performance.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effect on nerve regeneration of ultrasound irradiation in rats with peripheral nerve injury. Methods: To investigate alterations of the NCAM immunoreactivity in non-crushed part and crushed part of the spinal cord, the unilateral sciatic nerve of the rats were crushed. The expression of NCAM was used as the marked of peripheral nerve regeneration, and also plays an important role in developing nerve system. Experimental animals were sacrificed by perfusion fixation at post-injury 1, 3, 7, 14 days after ultrasound irradiation. The pulsed US was applied at a frequency of 1MHz and a spatial average-temporal average Intensity of 0.5W/of (20% pulse ratio) for 1 mins. The Luxol fast blue-cresyl violet stain were also done to observe the morphological changes. Results: Alteration of NCAM immunoreactivity in the crushed part and the non-crushed part of lower lumbar spinal cord were observed. NCAM-immunoreactivity cells were some increased in the dorsal horn lamina I, III and cell ventral horn at 1 day after unilateral sciatic nerve injury. However, there was not significant difference in the relationship between crushed part and non-crushed part. NCAM-inmmunoreactivity was remarkably increased at 3 days after unilateral sciatic nerve injuryin the gray matter and white matter. NCAM-immunoreactivity was increased in the ventral horn and post horn of experimental crushed part. Also, NCAM-immunoreactivity in large motor neurons in ventral horns lamina VIII, IX were increased at 7 days after unilateral sciatic nerve injury. At 14 days after sciatic nerve crushed injury, there was no significant difference. All group were decreased for 14 days. In the time course of NCAM expression, all groups showed a significant difference at 3day groups(p<0.05). Whereas, CC group was noted a significant difference between 3day and 7 day group respectively. In NCAM expression, there were significantly increased in all group. In the relationship between CNC group and ENC group, significant difference was detected among 3, 7, 14 day group(p<0.05). The difference between CC group and ENC group were noted in all groups(p<0.05). Conclusion: It is consequently suggested that the effects of the ultrasound irradiation may increase the NCAM immunoreactive neurons and glial cell in the spinal cord after unilateral sciatic nerve crushed injury. Therefore, the increased NCAM immunoreactivity in the spinal cord may reflect the neuronal damage and healing process induced by a ultrasound irradiation after peripheral nerve injury in rat.

  • This study, as a research for using crushed sand as a fine aggregate of concrete for nuclear structures, we improved the performance of impact crusher in the existing crushed sand production process and adjusted grain size to conform to ASTM C 33 The shape and grain size characteristics of a crushed sand were examined and concrete was prepared according to the substitution ratio of the sand to investigate the properties of fresh concrete and hardened concrete. The experimental results show that most of the concrete characteristics are equivalent to those of concrete using only heavy sand. However, when the substitution rate of steel sand exceeds 50%, the amount of air, compressive strength and tensile strength are somewhat reduced.
