  • PURPOSE: Sitting with crossed legs may have an effect on maintaining a healthy body posture and proper functioning of the respiratory system. Thus, this study's objective was to identify whether or not sitting with crossed legs affects the vertebral angle, chest wall mobility, the pulmonary function, and the activity of the respiratory muscles. METHODS: Thirty healthy subjects were recruited for this study (16 males and 14 females). The vertebral angle, chest wall mobility, pulmonary function, and the activity of the respiratory muscle were measured while the subjects sat in the correct posture and these factors were again measured with the subjects seated with their legs crossed. Three-dimensional motion analysis was used to determine the trunk and lumbar vertebral angles. Surface electromyography was employed to measure the sternocleidomastoid, the rectus abdominis, and the external and internal oblique abdominis muscles. A tapeline was utilized to evaluate the subjects' chest wall mobility. Spirometry was assessed to determine the forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second. Paired t-tests were then performed (p<.05). RESULTS: There were significant differences in the trunk and lumbar flexion angles, the chest wall mobility, the activity of the right external oblique muscle, and the left internal oblique abdominis muscle. However, the difference in pulmonary function did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION: A crossed leg posture caused slight thoracic extension and lumbar flexion, which may lead to a decrease of the chest wall mobility and also to an imbalance of the abdominal muscles. Therefore, sitting with a crossed leg posture should be avoided. Yet a crossed leg posture did not have any clinical effect on the pulmonary function of healthy people. It may be necessary to study the effects of sitting with crossed legs over an extended period of time for patients suffering with impaired respiratory function.

  • A novel wide viewing angle flexible liquid crystal display will be demonstrated. The crossed matrix-type micro-cell structure was adopted in this design. The LC domains were divided into four different tilted directions by the combination effect of pixel fringe field and crossed matrix type micro-cell. It can create four domains without rubbing process and form the cell gap without spacer. For flexible color fabrication, a novel inkjet printing technology is adopted. This cost effective wide viewing angle color flexible LCD technology can be a good solution for high performance flexible LCD.

  • We got operational safety limit angle being able to affect operators or materials surrounding the center of vertical line of the hoist on working from the theoretical review and experimental result. Then we inferred the distance to about 1.2m-1.4m from the center which materials hanged on the hook were able to effect to the surround. Therefore, we got about $7^{\circ}$ to the inclined or crossed operational safety limit angle of the crane with 6m lift. Also, we developed heisting rope automatic vertical controller which could control this kind of dangerous operation. And we did experiments again after establishing the inclined or crossed operational safety limit to $7^{\circ}$. The result is satisfied.

  • Gamma curve is one of the most important optical performance characteristics of a liquid crystal display. we present investigations on the relationship between gamma and polarizer. The gamma curve is affected by the angle of the polarizer absorption axis. When the crossed angle between the two polarizers turns larger, gamma values will decrease. The gamma variation caused from each polarizer variation could be improved by monitoring and controlling the axial direction of the polarizers.

  • The behaviors of the ground in crossed zone and the existing upper tunnel in shallow cover due to the excavation of new lower tunnel crossed to that was studied. Model test was performed in the large scale test pit, the size was '$4.0m(width){\times}3.8m(height){\times}4.1m(length)$'. Test ground was constructed uniformly by sand in middle density and test with the crossed angle of $56^{\circ}$ (obliquely) were performed. The numerical analysis was performed on equal condition with model test. Results of the study by model test and numerical analysis show that earth pressure and settlement of the ground in crossed zone were redistributed due to the longitudinal arching effect by the excavation of lower tunnel. Model test shows that upper tunnel blocks stress flow due to the longitudinal arching effect by excavation of lower tunnel.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the clinical and radiological results of the first metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis with two crossed screws fixation. Materials and Methods: We treated 23 patients (24 cases) with arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint using two crossed screws fixation between December 2000 and May 2005. There were 3 male patients and 20 female patients. Ages ranged from 28 to 74 years (mean, 50 years). Follow-up ranged from 4.1 to 8.2 years (mean, 6.5 years). The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and their satisfaction was evaluated clinically, foot anteroposterior and lateral radiograph, radiologically. Results: Of the 24 cases, 6 had surgery for dorsal plate and screws fixation because of failure to acquire firm fixation with two crossed screws fixation. All 6 cases acquired bony union. Fusion of the hallux first metatarsophalangeal joint occurred in 16/18 cases (89%). Nonunion occurred in 2 cases (11%) and was asymptomatic. At last follow-up, hallux valgus angle ranged from 11 to 25 degrees(mean, 17.7 degrees), dorsiflexion ranged from 15 to 25 degrees (mean, 22 degrees). The mean preoperative AOFAS score of 37 points(range, 28 to 45 points) improved to a mean of 77 points (range, 65~90 points) postoperatively. The result of the procedure as rated subjectively by the patient was excellent for 5 cases, good for 11 cases and fair for 2. Conclusion: Comparatively, the arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint with crossed screws fixation showed a satisfactory clinical results, we thought that require technical attention for firm fixation in operation.

  • Rolling process to fabricate a strip with even thickness is significant to enhance the quality of the strip. The thickness of a strip can be effectively controlled by pair-cross mills. However, pair-cross mill generates thrust in the axial direction of roller and causes skewness, deflection, twist and even accidental roll chock failure. Therefore, accurate estimation of the thrust of the pair-cross mill during rolling process is necessary to monitor the failure of roll and the quality of products. An empirical equation given by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) is hitherto employed, where the thrust is expressed in terms of rolling force, reduction ratio and crossed angle. However it turns out that the MHI empirical equation provides somehow inaccurate and unsuitable thrust in practical rolling processes. Moreover, we learn that three parameters involved in MHI equation are coupled each other. In this paper, axiomatic design principle is employed to select appropriate parameters involved in approximate equation in order to make parameters uncoupled. A quadratic equation using response surface method with new parameters is suggested. The accuracy of the approximate model is examined by comparing with real experimental data.

  • The effects of a hard-biased Held on the magnetic and magnetoresistive properties of a crossed spin-valve head are investigated by computer simulation with particular emphasis on the asymmetry of the output signal. The spin-valve considered in this work is NiMn (25 nm)/NiFe (2.5 m)/Cu (3 nm)/NiFe (5.5 m), with a length of 1500 m and a width of 600 nm. A simple model is used where each magnetic layer consists of a single domain, and the magnetoresistance is a function of the angle between the magnetization directions of the two magnetic layers. The ideal crossed spin-valve structure is not realized with the present model and magnetic parameters, but the deviation from ideality is decreased by the hard-biased field. This results in the improvement of the linearity of the output signal with the use of the bias field. The magnetoresistance ratio and magnetoresistive sensitivity, however are reduced. The magnetic properties including the magnetoresistance are found to be strongly affected by magnetostatic interactions, particularly the inter-layer magnetostatic field.

  • The plasma processing technologies of thin film deposition and surface treatment technique have been applied to many industrial fields. This study is purposed Large-area uniformity and surface treatment on the stainless substrate. We treat surface of stainless by $CF_4$ plasma. $CF_4$ plasma is generated by using SPM(Scanning plasma method)which is kind a of CVD. Generally, SPM has been used for uniform surface treatment using a crossed electromagnetic field. The optimum discharge condition has been studied for the gas pressure, the magnetic flux density and the distance between substrate and electrodes. In result, contact angle is increased by surface treatment using $CF_4$ Plasma. Therefore we expect that SPM to control contact angle is applied to many industries.
