Various useful relations involving Hammett's and $Br{\phi}nsted's$ coefficients are derived for cross interactions between identical groups: ${\rho}_{ii}={\rho}^N+{\rho}^L$, ${\rho}^L-{\rho}^N=1$, ${\beta}_{ii}={\beta}_N+{\beta}_L$ and ${\beta}_N-{\beta}_L=1$. The use of these relations enable us to correctly interprete the transition state structure. Another advantage of the use of these relations is to use ${\rho}/{\rho}_e$ for the determination of corresponding ${\beta}$ values instead of plotting log k vs $pK_{lg}$, once ${\rho}_e$ values for standardizing equilibria are obtained.
The shrink parameter in ridge regression may be contaminated by outlying points. We propose robust cross validation scores in ridge regression instead of classical cross validation. We use robust location estimators such as median, least trimmed squares, absolute mean for robust cross validation scores. The robust scores have global robustness. Simulations are performed to show the effectiveness of the proposed estimators.
This paper describes a new method for separation of the Volterra kernels which are identified by use of M-sequence. One of the authors has proposed a method for identification of Volterra kernels of nonlinear systems using M-sequence and correlation technique. When M-sequence are applied to a nonlinear systems, the cross-correlation function between the input and the output of the nonlinear systems includes cross-sections of high-order Volterra kernels. However, if various order Volterra kernels exixt on the obtained cross-correlation function, it is difficult to separate the Volterra kernels. In this paper, the authors show that the magnitude of Volterra kernels is maginified by the amplitude of M-sequence according to the order of Volterra kernels. By use of this property, each order Volterra kernels is obtained by solving linear equations. Simulations are carried out for some nonlinear systems. The results show that Volterra kernels can be separated in each order successfully by the proposed method.
This study examines the use of hedges in cross-cultural communication between EFL learners in an e-learning environment. The study analyzes the use of hedges in a corpus of an interactive web with a bulletin board system through which college students of English at Japanese and Korean universities interacted with each other discussing the topics of local and global issues. It compares the use of hedges in the students' corpus to that of a native English speakers' corpus. The result shows that EFL learners tend to use relatively smaller number of hedges than the native speakers in terms of the frequencies of the total tokens. It further reveals that the learners' overuse of a single versatile high-frequency hedging item, I think, results in relative underuse of other hedging devices. This indicates that due to their small repertoire of hedges, EFL learners' overuse of a limited number of hedging items may cause their speech or writing to become less competent. Based on the result and interviews with the learners, the study also argues that hedging should be understood in its social contexts and should not be understood just as a lack of conviction or a mark of low proficiency. Suggestions were made for using computer corpora in understanding EFL learners' language difficulties and helping them develop communicative and pragmatic competence.
Purpose - This study aims to identify consumer tendencies in Korea and Vietnam, focusing on the online platform called cross-border, to derive revenue generation measures and use them for strategies to advance into ASEAN. Design/methodology - The questionnaire collected 420 copies from December 1 to December 31, 2020, of which 408 were used for statistical processing. The structural equation model (SEM) and moderating effect analysis with Amos was used to test hypothesis in this research. Findings - The hypotheses were set as factors that positively influence the intention to use e-commerce, such as effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions and variety seeking showed statistically significant results. Among them, the social influence factor had the greatest influence, followed by facilitating condition. The sample was divided into countries, Korea and Vietnam, and these changes and differences in influence were confirmed through moderating effect analysis. Originality/value - The moderating effect on both countries (Korea and Vietnam) was found to have a moderating effect on the intention to use. For Korean consumers, significant results were found in the effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, and variety seeking, but for Vietnamese consumers, there were significant effects on the social influence and facilitating conditions, but the effort expectancy and variety seeking had no significant effect.
Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers cross-linked with pentaerythritol, a four-way cross-linker, are prepared to compare their mechanical and shape memory properties with the one cross-linked by glycerol. Composition of PEG and pentaerythritol is varied to search for the one with the best mechanical and shape memory properties. The highest shape recovery rate is observed for the copolymer composed of 30 mol% PEG-200 and 2.5 mol% pentaerythritol. Four-way cross-linking by pentaerythritol significantly improves shape recovery rate and retention of high shape recovery rate after repeated use compared to the one cross-linked by glycerol, a three-way cross-linker, and difference and advantage of additional cross-linking point are discussed.
The purpose of this study was to examine whether a temporal relationship would develop between the overuse/addictive use of mobile phones and depression in adolescents. For this study, we used the 4-year longitudinal data (2004-2007, Study 1, which measured the overuse of mobile phones and depression) and the 2-year longitudinal data (2010-2011, Study 2, which measured the addictive use of mobile phones and depression) of the Korea Youth Panel study. In addition, the study explored gender differences with respect to the above mentioned relationship. Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was carried out, along with a multiple group analysis across genders. The findings showed that the overuse/addictive use of mobile phones and depression in adolescents had a significant effect on the future selves of these adolescents over time. Moreover, the overuse/addictive use of mobile phones had a significant influence on subsequent depression, rather than vice versa. This means that as the overuse/addictive use of mobile phones by adolescents increases, their depression intensifies later on; however, as depression among adolescents intensifies, the overuse/addictive use of mobile phones by adolescents' does not increase. Further, the study showed there were significant gender differences in the longitudinal relationship between the overuse/addictive use of mobile phones and depression. Study 1 shows that, prior to the release of smartphones, the overuse of mobile phones had a definite effect on the depression of only males. However, Study 2 shows that, after the release of smartphones, the effect of the addictive use of mobile phones on depression in females was greater than that in males.
Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate baseline use and positive rates of staging images (bone scan, CT) in newly diagnosed patients with prostate cancer (PCa) and to improve staging image overuse. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study covered a consecutive series of patients with PCa who underwent stage imaging at our institution between 2006 and 2011. Various clinical and pathological variables (age, PSA, biopsy Gleason score, clinical T stage, positive biopsy core rate) were evaluated by multivariate logistic regression analysis for their ability to predict a positive staging image. All patients were stratified according to the NCCN risk stratification and positive rates were compared in each risk group. Results: 410 patients (100%) underwent a bone scan and 315 patients (76.8%) underwent a CT scan. Some 51 patients (12.4%) had a positive bone scan, clinical T3 and T4 being significant independent predictors. Positive bone scan rates for low-, intermediate-, high-, and very high-risk groups were 0%, 0%, 8.25%, and 56.6%. Some 59 (18.7%) patients had a positive CT scan, with elevated PSA and clinical T3, T4 as significant independent predictors. Low-, intermediate-, high- and very high-risk group rates were 0%, 0%, 13.8% and 80.0%. Conclusions: The incidences of positive staging image in low- and intermediate- risk group were reasonably low. Following feedback on these results, staging in low- and intermediate- risk groups could be omitted.
In high resolution imaging devices, smaller aperture in the color filter causes cross talk which provides incorrect information. Plasmonic color filters (PCFs) have been reported as an alternative of the conventional color resist based-color filter (CRCF) and many studies on PCFs demonstrated the filtering function by PCFs with a sub-micron size. In this work, we investigated the cross talk performance of PCFs compared to CRCFs. The effect of cross talk over distance from the filter were measured for each filter. Despite poorer spectral filtering characteristics, PCFs were more robust against cross talk than CRCFs. Also, the further away from the filter, the more cross talk appeared. As a result, PCFs showed less cross talk than CRCFs at about 82% of the results measured at a distance of 2~10 ㎛. This study will help to make practical use of PCFs in high-resolution imaging applications.
