The effect of corporate risk on Korean bond market (기업의 위험이 회사채 수익률에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzes determinants of bond returns in terms of systematic risk versus idiosyncratic risk by examining relationship among those factors. First we examined the cross-sectional determinants of corporate bond returns with Korean bond market data from 2001 to 2014. This paper uses term factor and default factor for systematic risk, and duration factor and credit rating factor for idiosyncratic risk. The empirical result shows that systematic risk can explain cross-sectional differences of bond returns rather than idiosyncratic risk which is the same result in advanced markets(US or Europe). This result is different from the previous Korean studies which showed that idiosyncratic risk is more important than systematic risk in Korean bond market. The reason for the different result may be the longer sample period which includes the most recent period. It is insisted that Korean bond market is getting more synchronized with the advanced bond market. In conclusion, this empirical result implies that Korean bond portfolio managers should focus on systematic risk, which is contrary to current system in Korean asset management industry.

  • The Knowledge Transfer (KT) for higher education institutions (HEIs) is boundless. Still and all, the members of the staff affiliated with these institutions do recognize an array of hitches in relation to KT practices. The study in question underscores social interactions, training, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as the primary barriers and treats them as the independent variables of the study. The study posits that inadequate management of the above-mentioned barriers would impact effective KT unfavorably. Besides, putting forth some striking solutions needed to fix the obstructions that hamper the adequate management of the KT exercises is another aim of the study. For data collection purposes, the study picks out higher education institutions (public) of the Quetta district. The reckoned sample size is 317 subjects. The research type that has been used is cross-sectional research and, in this context, the cross-sectional explanatory sequential design has been used. Concerning the findings of the paper, the results of PLS-SEM show positive and significant relationships of social interaction and training with knowledge transfer, while ICT shows an insignificant positive relationship with the knowledge transfer. The most influencing factor for the knowledge transfer is social interaction as suggested by social interaction theory.

Muscle Strength and Biochemical Markers as Predictors of Depression in Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study

  • Patients with chronic renal failure, many of which treated with hemodialysis, present a high prevalence of impaired muscle strength which suggest that muscle mass parameters may be used as markers for changes in muscle in these patients. Measurement of handgrip strength (HGS) is a common, simple, and quick measure of muscle function an indicator of overall muscle strength which has been associated with physical activity and several anthropometric traits. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) are biochemical markers associated with inflammatory processes which are a common consequence of dialysis. Additionally, hemodialysis patients frequently present signs of malnutrition and depression. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate if muscle and biochemical markers could be used to predict the risk of depression in hemodialysis patients. Several anthropometric parameters, nutrient intake, depression state and the serum levels of ICAM-1 and IGF-1 were determined and Pearson's correlation coefficient and/or Spearman's correlation coefficient were used to test the correlation between them. Our results do not show a correlation between HGF, IGF-1 and ICAM-1 with the depression status of the patients, but mid-arm muscle circumference (MAMC) was statistically and positively correlated with depression. Additionally, ICAM-1 levels were negatively correlated with HGS, MAMC, and IGF-1. Overall, the results of the present study suggest that HGS may be used as an indicator of cardiovascular diseases and MAMC may be a good predictor of the level of depression in hemodialysis patients, although further studies are required.

Adolescent Smoking Behaviors and the Related Risk Factors in Korea: A Descriptive Literature Review

  • This study conducted descriptive literature review on adolescent smoking and the related factors to realize significance of adolescent smoking onset in Korea and to identify risk factors of smoking incidence. Korean adolescent smoking status was generated based on the cumulated data of the Korean Association of Smoking and Health. Risk factors of adolescent smoking were identified based on 18 studies written in English, with cross-sectional research design and published as a peer-reviewed journal article between 1994 and 2003. The results were as follows. 1. Korean adolescent smoking rate was the highest among OECD affiliated countries; in particular, male adolescent smoking incidence was very serious. 2. Risk factors related to smoking of adolescent population were personal factor, friend factor, family factor, and mass-media factor. Demographic characteristics, attitudes on smoking, and willingness of smoking, and health behaviors were selected as personal factor of smoking. 3. Best friends smoking was a strong factor of students' smoking set. Prevalent popularity of smoking in peer-group allowed students to feel free to smoking. 4. Concerning family factor related to smoking status, parents' smoking and sibling's smoking were significant indicators of adolescent smoking status. 5. Seeing smoking behaviors and scenes through films, TV shows, drama, and advertisement was a significant risk factor of adolescent smoking status.

Evaluation of effective cross-area of reinforced concrete wall considering chloride diffusion using ANN

  • Reinforced concrete structures are subject to exposure to chloride ions in the air, leading to chloride penetration, and carbonation attacks resulting from exposure to carbon dioxide. This chemical degradation process induces corrosion of reinforcing bars within concrete, significantly impacting durability. Structures situated in coastal areas, such as nuclear power plants, are particularly susceptible to rapid chloride penetration due to the high chloride concentration in the air. This study utilizes existing experimental data to forecast the chloride diffusion coefficient employing artificial neural network (ANN technology). The total number of experimental data was 535 gathered from 18 papers. Through analysis of the chloride coefficient and predicted degradation depth, the effective cross-sectional area of concrete is examined, and the deterioration of wall performance is forecasted.

Determination of the Static Rigidity of the End Mill Using Neural Network (신경망을 이용한 엔드밀의 정적 강성 결정)

  • The deflection of an end mill is very important in machining process and cutting simulation because it affects directly workpiece accuracy, cutting force, and chattering. In this study, the deflection of the end mill was studied both experimentally and by using finite element analysis. And the moment of inertia of cross sections of the helical end mill is calculated for the determination of the relation between geometry of radial cross section and rigidity of the tools. Using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and the concept of equivalent diameter, a deflection model is established, which includes most influences from tool geomety parameters. It was found that helix angle attenuates the rigidity of the end mill by the finite element analysis. As a result, the equivalent diameter is determined by tooth number, inscribed diameter ratio, cross sectional geometry and helix angle. Because the relation betweem equivalent diameter and each factor is nonlinear, neural network is used to decide the equivalent diameter. Input patterns and desired outputs for the neural network are obtained by FEM analysis in several case of end milling operations.

  • After IMF crisis in late 1997, the environment of banking industry has become competitive. To survive in this circumstance, the Local Nong-Hyup is needed to understand the customer's needs and improve the service quality. To achive the purpose, two methods were employed in this study. The first corvered the review of related literature on service. The second adopted field survey approach for data. The study model was developed using Venkatakrishnan & Jagannathan's "An Enhanced Model for Measuring Service Quality" model and details of study as follows. 1. What is the determination factors of service quality for Local Nong-Hyup. 2. Are there differences between "service perception" and "service expectation" for Local Nong-Hyup. 3. Does banking service determination factor of Local Nong-hyup affects customer's satisfaction. 4. Does banking service determination factor of Local Nong-hyup affects customer's repurchase. 5. Does customer's satisfaction for Local Nong-hyup relates repurchase. The samples of this study were extracted at random from the customers of Local Nong-hyup. The results of the questionnaire were analyzed to do frequency analysis, factor analysis, t-test, regression analysis, cross sectional analysis using SPSS Win 10. The results are as follows, First, as determination factors of service quality for Local Nong-Hyup "Reliability, Empathy, Tangibles, Convenience" were extracted by factor analysis. Secondly, using t-test, it was found that there are factor's gap between service anticipation and service perception. Thirdly, using regression analysis, it was found that except Convenience factor, Reliability, Empathy and Tangibles factors affect customer's satisfaction. Forthly, using regression analysis, it was found that all the factors affect repurchase. Finally, using cross sectional analysis, it was found that customer's satisfaction and customer's repurchase correlate.

Friction Factor of Rectangular Open Channel Flow (사각형 개수로 마찰계수)

  • The present paper discusses the traditional empirical equations of friction factor or cross-sectional mean velocity of open channel flow and suggests the new form of friction factor equation. Dimensional analysis is conducted for the possible forms of traditional empirical equations in order to satisfy the dimensional equality, and new forms of empirical equations are presented with introducing equivalent roughness height. Considering the distribution of friction factor against Reynolds number which has a similar characteristics to that of smooth turbulent flow in circular pipe, the friction factor equation of rectangular open channel flow is developed by modifying the friction factor equation of circular pipe flow for the region of smooth turbulent flow. The equations including the dimensionally-corrected empirical equations are tested against Bazin's laboratory experiments.

  • An image analysis was used for the interpretation of microstructures of ferrous metal artifacts. For the purposes, various microstructural features such as average grain size, phase area, shape factor, and composition of the inclusions, were parameterized for the information about manufacturing techniques such as casting, heating and tempering. The carbon content was determined through the evaluation of the amount of pearlite phase. As the amount of pearlite phase increased the shape factor also increased. Grain size was relatively smaller in trans-section than in cross-section. The manufacturing direction was trans-sectional because the orientation of inclusions was elongated lengthwise. All inclusions was of silicate groups and the manufacturing temperature was estimated up to $1450^{\circ}C$.

  • This article has compared the level of activities of occupational safety and health in workplace among sub-sectors of manufacturing industry in order to set the priority for policy intervention. Data of manufacturing industry in the survey on the current status of occupational safety and health was used with factor analysis and radar graphic method. Authors have categorized sub-sectors of manufacturing industry into four categories, attained group, active group, neglected group, and passive group based on injury rate, level of safety and health activities. The neglected group may be the first target group for occupational safety and health policy guiding some detailed occupational safety and health activities. Limitation of this study is that cross sectional data was analyzed. The long term effect could not be analyzed.
