  • Turbulent jet flow has been studied in many ways; a plane jet, a rectangular jet, an annular jet, a round jet, a wall jet, a parallel jet, a valve jet, a cross jet, a slit jet and etc. In this report, a 45.deg. cross jet flow was tried by using two same dimensioned nozzels(dia..phi.20)which were set up at the exit of the subsonic wind tunnel. Each jet flows to the direction of 22.5.deg. to the axis of downstream of the mixed flow. The centerline of each jet meets at the distance of 217.3mm and their mixing flow could be imagined to develop beyond that distance, so the measurement was effectuated at X/X$_{0}$=1.2-1.5. The section of the mixed flow a elliptic circle which is formed by the 22.5.deg. inclined flows to the X direction. This experimental study aimed at the investigation of the turbulent mixing process of two jets; the mean velocities, the turbulent shear stresses, the correlation coefficients, and the momentum were respectively measured. The mean velocity distribution profiles of the down-stream component measured in the Y direction coincide well with the empirical equation of Gortler and those measured in the Z direction agree with the equation of H. Schlichting. Other mean velocities V over bar and W over bar components were randomly distributed. The higher values with same order of the intensity of turbulence were largely distributed at the central part of the flow. The momentum was decreased up to 70% by the shock losses and the development of intense turbulences, but it kept its value constantly beyond X/d=14. Two-channel hot-wire anemometer systems (model 1050 series), X-type hot-wire made of tungsten (dia. .phi.e.mu.m, long 3mm, model 0252 T5), a computer(model HP 9845B0, and a plotter (model HP 9872C) were used for the experiments and the analyses.s.

  • This study performed a single hole operation method using a balancing well-cross-mixed underground heat exchanger, and conducted thermal performance studies of an SCW-type underground heat exchanger using a two-well. The study attempted to change the existing operating method of the two adjacent SCW underground heat exchangers with one ball each. The SCW-type geothermal heat exchanger is considered to enable up to 20% of bleed discharge at maximum load, which makes groundwater usage unequal. The efficiency factor of the geothermal system was improved by constructing the discharged water by cross-mixing two balancing wells to prevent the discharge of groundwater sources and keep the temperature of the underground heat exchanger constant. As a result of the cooling and heating operation with the existing SCW heat exchange system and the balancing well-cross-mixed heat exchange system, the measured performance coefficient improved by 23% and 12% in cooling and heating operations, respectively. In addition, when operating with a balanced cross-mixing heat exchange system, it has been confirmed that the initial basement temperature is constant with a standard deviation of 0.08 to 0.12℃.

  • The flow field around a high-speed train including cross-wind effects has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial frame using the iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives, 3th-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms and 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme for the viscous terms. The Marker-and-Cell concept was applied to efficiently solve continuity equation, which is differenced with 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A C-H type of elliptic grid system is generated around a high-speed train including ground. The Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model was implemented to simulate the turbulent flows. To validate the present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at constant yaw angle of $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ has been simulated. The simulation shows 3-D vortex generation in the lee corner. The flow separation is also observed around the rear of the train. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

  • Mean velocities and turbulent characteristics in the three-dimensional flow fields of a gun-type gas burner were measured by using triple hot-wire probe (T-probe) in order to compare them with the results already presented by X-type hot-wire probe (X-probe). Vectors obtained by the measurement of two kinds of probes in the horizontal plane and in the cross section respectively show more or less difference in magnitude each other, but comparatively similar shape in overall distribution. Axial mean velocity component along the centerline shows that the value by T-probe is about ten times smaller than that by X-probe above the range of X/R=3. Also, the axial component of turbulent intensity along the centerline appears the biggest difference between the two probes. Moreover, axial mean velocity component, axial turbulent intensity component and rotational along the Y-directional distance show a big difference between slits and swirl vanes. On the whole, the values by T-probe appear smaller than those by X-probe.

  • This paper proposes the design and implementation of fluid flow generation system by using polypropylene(PP) water capture, which harvests electric energy from the kinetic energy of tidal current or water flow and drives the desired load, and applies it to the discharge drain of Hadong thermal power plant. This experimental system is composed of water captures, driving wheel, gear trains, 10[kW] synchronous generator, and three phase rectifying circuit which drives lamp load for test. The proposed water capturing system which is composed of water captures, rope and driving wheel, rotates as caterpillar according to water flow. This system is very easy to manufacture and more economical than another type of tidal current turbines such as conventional propeller and helical type. Also, we estimated the available fluid flow energy that can be extracted from the cooling water in discharge drain based on drain's cross-sectional area. Therefore, this paper confirms the validity of proposed fluid flow generation system with water captures and the possibility of its application for renewable energy generation in discharge drain of thermal power plant, from the obtained performance characteristic of this energy conversion system.

  • In this experimental study for the current growing offshore wind, a wind tunnel test was conducted to examine the performance of the vertical-type cross-flow wind turbine power generation system. Due to the limited size of the test section of the wind tunnel, the inlet guide vane of the original wind power generation was scaled down to about 1/5 and the turbine impeller diameter was also reduced to 1/2 of the prototype impeller. The number of the impeller blade is another important parameter to the output power of the wind power generation system and the number was varied 8 and 16. From the analysis of the experimental result, the output brake power of the model wind turbine was measured as 278watts with the 16-blade at 12 m/s of the rated wind speed and the rated brake power of the prototype wind turbine is calculated to 3.9kW at the rated operating condition.

  • Numerical investigation of a centrifugal compressor volute having a modified straight conical duct hill been made. Three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence equation are solved To avoid coordinate singularity at the central axis of the duct, multi-block H-type grid is generated on the circular cross-sections of the volute and stretched toward the solid wall boundary. We obtained numerical results with three different mass flow rates at the volute inlet, namely, with the inlet conditions that give small, medium and large mass flow rates at the outlet of the conical duct. Agreement with the experimental results is observed.

  • Particle trajectory visualization using laser sheet was performed to investigate the corona wind flow interactions in the one-wire and two-wire type electrostatic precipitators. The corona wind generated by corona discharge was not negligible, and strong flow interactions took place owing to the induced circulatory cells. In the case of one-wire type, as the applied voltage was increased and the cross-section mean velocity was decreased, the effect of corona wind became active. In the case of two-wire type, if upstream discharge voltage was relatively higher than downstream discharge voltage, the effect of upstream corona wind was reduced.

  • The performance of cooling tower is dependent on the thermal performance of the packings. It's assessed by heat transfer rate and fan power. In this study, new packing was developed for application in compact type cross-flow cooling tower. The packing characteristic curve and the pressure drop curve were obtained by measuring packing characteristic values and pressure drops of small sized filler in comparison to existing mid-large sized filler. The heat transfer characteristics on small sized filler are about 66% higher than existing mid-large sized filler. The pressure drop characteristics on small sized filler are about two times of the pressure drop characteristics on existing mid-large sized filler.

  • In dehumidification evaporation cooling system. the regeneratie evaporative cooler(REC) makes an important role to reduce the sensible cooling load in the system through evaporative cooling, By this reason, many studies about increasing the cooling capacity of the REC were undertook. In this paper, we analyzed the cooling characteristics of the REC due to the structures of the REC and determined the best structure for the REC's effectiveness and cooling capacity. From the study. we could obtain some important results: at first. corrugated type has the benefit to expand the channel width of the REC, But because the type has some weak points about the size and weight. there is almost no benefit to improve the performance of the REC. Through these reasons. we decided that finned type is the best structure to improve the performance of the REC.
