Radial color gradient of disk galaxies has been a key tool for diagnosing the ages and metallicities of the stars and gas of these galaxies, and thus, the formation process of these disks. In many cases, observational data support the 'inside-out' picture of disk galaxy formation proposed by Larson (1976). In this scenario, gas within dark matter halos cools and accretes on to the outer disk while enhancing star formation in the disk. Recent discoveries of "extended ultra-viloet" (XUV) disks also show that majority of disk galaxy experience active star formation within out disks where gas surface density is quite low (Thilker et al. 2007; Gil de Paz et al. 2007). However, neither gas, nor stars stay put within galaxies. They rather migrate into bulges, disperse throughout galaxies, or flow into and out of galaxies via various mechanisms. There have been a few notable studies to investigate how radial star formation and metal abundance gradients vary across populations of disk galaxies systematically. However, the mechanisms driving gas transport are still poorly understood. Cross-matching various galaxy catalogs including KVAGC and UKIDSS, we are investigating if color gradients of late-type galaxies depend on their physical properties, especially on environmental properties. We will present the result from the pilot study on Karachentsev isolated galaxy catalog.
This paper presents twin spray characteristics of two impinging F-O-O-F type injectors in which fuel and oxidizer impinge on each other to atomize under the various conditions. The droplet size and velocity in the impinging spray flow field were measured using a PDPA. The droplet size and velocity were investigated at mixture ratios of 1.5, 2.0, 2.47 and 3.0 for four injectors in which two single F-O-O-F injectors were arranged at intervals of 20.8, 31.2, 41.6 and 62.4mm respectively. In general, the arithmetic mean diameter, SMD and standard deviation of droplet size in the interaction area (X=0 and Y=0mm) were smaller. The axial velocity in the interaction area was slightly higher. Considering the behavior of impinged droplets using the We number calculated by using the axial velocity instead of the relative velocity in line C in Fig. 1(b) for four injectors, it is consumed that the We number over 500 had the possibility to disintegrate, and the We number below 500 had it to cohere after impingement of twin spray. The results of this study can be used for the design of a nozzle for liquid propellant rockets.

The wall pressure fluctuations of a turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate have been investigated in an anechoic wind tunnel facility. The anechoic wind tunnel consists of acoustically-lined duct, muffler, and splitter-type silencer for noise suppression and vanes for reducing head losses involved. To improve spectra characteristics in high frequency range, a 1/8" pressure-type microphone sensor, which has a pin-holed cap of various diameters, was employed in this experiment. It was shown that the pin-holed microphone sensor with a dimensionless diameter $d^+$ of 7.1 resolved the high frequency pressure fluctuations most effectively among ones with various pin-hole diameters. The measured wall pressure spectra in terms of three types of scaling parameters were in good agreement with other experimental and numerical results. The pressure events of high amplitude were found to contribute to total fluctuating pressure energies in the turbulent boundary layer significantly and supposed to radiate to the far-field effectively.
The reattachment of buoyant effluent to shore in a crossflow is investigated experimentally. The effluent is produced by discharging warm water through projecting side channel into a confined cross-flow of the same depth. In the projecting effluent, the size of recirculating region, which is formed by defleted thermal plume on the lee of the effluent, tends to increase, but the maximum temperature decreases in the direction of the crossflow and it has more even transverse spreading compared to non-projecting type. The heat flux across the crossflow is found to be independant of the projected length of the side channel under relatively low buoyancy flux on the contrary to high buoyancy flux. The reattachment of the effluent can be specified by both velocity ratio and densimetric Froude number, whereas only the velocity ratio is governing factor to the reattachment of the effluent in the case of non-projecting type.

Recently, low speed vehicle (LSV) is beginning to appear for various usages. The body of the LSV is usually made of the aluminum space frame (ASF) type rather than the monocoque or unitary construction type. A pa.1 of the reason is that it is easier to reduce mass efficiently while the required stiffness and strength are maintained. A design flow for LSV is proposed. Design specifications for structural performances of LSV do not exist yet. Therefore, they are defined through a comparative study with general passenger automobiles. An optimization problem is formulated by the defined specifications. At first, one pillar which has an important role in structural performances is selected and the reinforcements of the pillar are determined from topology optimization to maximize the stiffness. At second, the thicknesses of cross sections are determined to minimize the mass of the body while design specifications are satisfied. The optimum solution is compared with an existing design. The optimization process has been performed using a commercial optimization software system, GENESIS 7.0.

Structure of flashback and reignition occurring near flameholder was experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter flameholder. The combustor has a long duct shape with cross section of $40{\times}40mm$ and City Nature Gas(CNG) were used as fuel. Measurements of chemiluminescence with high speed camera was used for visualization of flame structure. In the lean case, flashback distance depend on equivalent ratio. New flame occurred at the front tip of flameholder when flashback. Flashback flame moved toward downstream direction of combustor because mixture flow velocity had increased, and then re-ignition was caused by entering flow into recirculation zone that is formed behind the flameholder.
This study is to develop an assessment system for stream physical environments by considering stream characteristics. Comprehensively, the descriptions of and steam classification, assessing reach selection, contents of assessment categories and indexes are summarized. Since the physical structure of stream is results of reaction by stream power, streams were classified into three types (as high gradient stream, mid gradient stream and low gradient stream) according to the slope of channel, the grain size of bed material and the characteristics of channel topography. The scale of assessment reach was selected based on 10 or 25 times of channel width according to typical characteristics such as interval of step or riffle and sinuosity in each stream type. The assessment indexes were organized into common indicators such as channel stability, flow status, cross-section shape, bank stability, channel alteration and stream crossing structure, and characteristic indicators by stream type such as effective habitats, bed embeddedness, diversity of flow and frequency of step or riffle. To evaluate the applicability, the assessment system was applied to 9 streams and the results were analyzed and presented.

In activated sludge process, sludge settling condition is affected by organic loading rate or operation condition, and if settling condition is getting worse, it is common that overall process fails due to wash-out of biomass causing low concentration in the aeration tank. Also activated sludge process has such several problems as requiring large area, consuming a lot of power and producing large volume of sludge. Increased public concern over health and the environment combined with a strong desire to reduce capital, operating and maintenance costs, have created a need for innovative technologies for building new high quality effluents which vail meet 21st century crkeria. MBR(Membrane Bioreactor) process consists of a biological reactor and ultrafiltration(UF) membrane system that replaces the conventional clarifier of an activated sludge process. The main operating advantages of this system are that the quality of the effluent is independent of the settleability of the mixed liquor and that the effluent is free of suspended solids in any operating condition. It is possible to eliminate clarifier and to reduce the volume of aeration tank because it can afford to accumulate high biomass concentration in the bioreactor(20, 000~30, 000mg/L), which would not be possible in a conventional activated sludge process. Therefore, this process reduces overall treatment plant area. In addition to those advantages, Longer SRT condition enables higher sludge digestion in MBR process so the sludge volume produced is 50 to 70% lower than that of conventional activated sludge process There are two kinds of MBR process according to the allocations of membrane. One is cross flow type MBR of which module is located outside of the bioreactor and mixed liquor is driven into the membrane module. The other is submerged type MBR process of which module is submerged in the bioreactor and mixed liquor is generally sucked from the lumen side. addition to that the cake layer is often removed by the uplifting flow of bubbling air. A submerged MBR process is superior to a crossflow MBR in regard to the power consumption because suction pressure of a submerged MBR is generally lower than that of a crossflow MBR which has recirculation pump. A submerged MBR, therefore, has the potential to be applied to small wastewater treatment plants that need low cost treatment systems.

The flow in a microchannel is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved. In this regard, we developed a novel chaotic micromixer, named Serpentine Laminating Micromixer (SLM) in the present study, Part 1. In the SLM, the higher level of chaotic mixing can be achieved by combining two general chaotic mixing mechanisms: splitting/recombination and chaotic advection. The splitting and recombination (in other term, lamination) mechanism is obtained by the successive arrangement of 'F'-shape mixing units in two layers. The chaotic advection is induced by the overall three-dimensional serpentine path of the microchannel. Chaotic mixing performance of the SLM was fully characterized numerically. To compare the mixing performance, a T-type micromixer which has the same width, height and length of the SLM was also designed. The three-dimensional numerical mixing simulations show the superiority of the SLM over the T-type micromixer. From the cross-sectional simulation results of mixing patterns, the chaotic advection effect from the serpentine channel path design acts favorably to realize the ideal lamination of fluid flow as Re increases. Chaotic mixing mechanism, proposed in this study, could be easily integrated in Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-Chip and so on.

The difference of mooring tension by type of buoy was investigated in the circulating water channel and the wave tank for deducting the most stable buoy from the current and the wave condition. 5 types of buoy made up of short cylinder laid vertically (CL-V), short cylinder laid horizontally (CL-H), capsule (CS), sphere (SP) and long cylinder (CL-L) were used for experiments. A mooring line and a weight were connected with each buoy. A tensile gauge was installed between a mooring line and a weight. All buoy's mooring tension was measured at the same time for the wave test with periods of 1.5~3.0 sec and wave heights of 0.1~0.3 m, and the current test with flow speeds of 0.2~1.0 m/sec. As a result, the order of tension value in the wave test was CL-H > CL-V > SP > CS > CL-L. In the current test CL-V and CL-H were recorded in the largest tension value, whereas SP has the smallest tension value. So it seems that SP buoy is the most effective in the location affected by fast current. CS is predicted to be suitable for a location that influence of wave is important more than that of current if practical use in the field is considered. And it was found that the difference of mooring tension among buoys in wave is related to the product of the cross sectional area and the drag coefficient for the buoy's bottom side in high wave height. The factor for the current condition was not found. But it was supposed to be related to complex factors like a dimension and a shape by buoy's posture to flow.
