This study reviews the structure of wooden printing blocks in Japan, focusing on the blocks as three-dimensional objects. Inspection is more effective three-dimensionally than two-dimensionally, and for the first time in wooden printing block research, the study uses a 3D CT scanner and a high-resolution 3D digitizer. The 3D CT scanner examines cross sections of the blocks and identifies their grain and contents, including insects surviving within them. The 3D digitizer enables observation of objects up to 0.02 mm; this allows detailed collection of block surface information, which is difficult to identify with a conventional microscope.

Preparing food is a universal activity of families and households around the world. The kitchen is the site of these activities and is often considered the center of the home. This symposium examines housing and kitchens in Eastern and Western countries through an exploration of cultural history and lifestyles throughout the centuries. Korea and the United States were selected as the original countries for comparison and study. China and Japan were included to provide a more comprehensive Oriental perspective, while England and Italy were included to expand on the European heritage prevalent in the history of the United States.
Tree-ring dating can be used to date scientifically prehistoric timbers, historical buildings or woodcrafts. It gives a calendar year to each tree ring and produces the felling dates of logs or wood panels. In this study, we applied tree-ring dating to a medicine cabinet in Seoul Museum of History. We obtained tree-ring data from radial or cross section by taking photographs with a digital camera. The cabinet were dated A.D. 1821 to the last ring. It was about 50 year older than the previous medicine cabinets. Tree-ring patterns indicated that the origin of woods for the cabinet would be near Sorak mountains.
This study compares the ethical inclination regarding consumer misbehaviors from two countries with contrasting cultural characteristics. National samples of South Korean and American adults provided their perceptions of the appropriateness of 12 ethically questionable consumer actions. The scenarios ranged from illegal actions, such as fraudulently inflating one's losses when filing an insurance claim to legal, yet questionable, actions such as purchasing an item that the buyer recognizes as having been mispriced. The 12 scenarios exhibited a wide range of mean responses in both countries, thereby supporting the oft-stated premise that consumer ethics is a situational phenomenon. Findings indicate not only where the cultures diverge but also where they converge towards a degree of congruence. Plausible explanations for differences based upon cultural dynamics are provided.
The purpose of this study is to contrast the patterns of realization and understanding of refusal speech acts between Korean and Thai learners. This study intends to answer the following questions: (1) Do Koreans and Thai learners perform refusal speech acts differently? (2) Do Koreans and Thai learners understand refusal speech acts differently? A DCT and a follow-up interview were conducted to collect data of two groups of 30 native Korean speakers and 30 native Thai speakers. For research question 1, we analyzed the refusal strategy and provided reasons given by Koreans and Thai learners depending on the context. For research question 2, we ran a chi-squared test on the elements of the follow-up interviews, such as the weight of burden of refusing, and whether the participant would actually refuse or not. The differences between the refusal strategies of the two groups could be categorized by the preceding inducing speech act. In refusing a request, the difference was prominent in the apologizing strategy, whereas in refusing a suggestion, the difference was mainly in the direct refusal strategy. When refusing an invitation, the most evident difference was the number of refusal strategies employed. When providing an explanation of refusal to people with high social status, Koreans gave more specific reasons for refusals, whereas Thai learners tended to use more vague reasons. Moreover, when refusing an invitation, Koreans primarily mentioned the relationship, and Thai learners showed the spirit of Greng Jai. When asked the weight of burden of refusing, Koreans felt pressured to refuse a request from people with high social status, and a suggestion or invitation from people with high level of intimacy while Thai learners found it highly difficult to make a refusal in all cases. In answering whether they would actually refuse or not, Koreans tried not to make a refusal to people with high level of intimacy, and such a trend was not evident among the Thai. This study can help us better understand the learner's pragmatic failure, and serve as a basis in establishing a curriculum for teaching speech acts.

The study examines differences in entrepreneurial intentions and its antecedents across countries and cultures. This study uses Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour to compare the entrepreneurial intention of two diverse countries: Saudi Arabia and India. The study uses the non-parametric Mann Whitney U test and Structural Equation Modeling to analyze a sample of university students of the two countries. The study finds significant differences among the students of these two countries. The result indicates that entrepreneurial intention is higher in Indian students than their counterparts in Saudi Arabia. The result further indicates that attitude and perceived behavioral control explains entrepreneurial intention in both the countries. However, social norms are significant in explaining entrepreneurial intention only in India and not in Saudi Arabia. The findings of this study suggest that entrepreneurship has higher social approval in India when compared to Saudi Arabia. Social norms impact entrepreneurial intentions differently for India and Saudi Arabia. The study attributes the results to the differences in per capita income and socio-cultural norms in both countries. This study is one of the few that have explored cross-country entrepreneurial attributes as it addresses the research gap in terms of comparing entrepreneurial intentions of India and Saudi Arabia.
This study compared Korean and American children on scaffolding by peers during dramatic play. Thirty Korean and twenty American 5-year-old kindergarteners participated. The data were analyzed by Spradly's (1980) Developmental Research Sequence (DRS), using qualitative methods. The results showed that the categories of scaffolding (theme and communication) occurred more frequently among American children than among Korean children. In both cultures, more capable peers scaffolded children during dramatic play and were able to extend the dramatic play.
This study is to find social welfare practices that married women migrant can provide to them in order to relieve the stress of cultural differences and enjoy a good family life. Results,First, action plans to overcome intercultural differences are needed. To overcome effective cross-cultural differences, interventions and goals are set for culturally diverse clients that match their racial, cultural, ethnic, gender and sexual orientation.Second, it is necessary to cultivate professional education personnel. In order to train professionals, cultural diversity should be addressed in existing social welfare courses.Third, the related laws need to be rearranged. The Multicultural Family Support Act continues to emerge as a need for supplementation, including the understanding of Korean family culture and the lack of counseling for immigrant women. As a result, married women immigrants recognize that Korean life is different from their own in many aspects of their daily lives, so they endeavor to have a lot of patience and high level of effort in the adaptation process. Therefore, there is a need for a social welfare practice that can support this.

Second, Cognitive Flexibility had positive effects on all sub variables on adaptive performance and Prove Goal Orientation had positive effects on some sub variables on adaptive performance such as problem solving, cope with uncertainty, cross cultural adaptability. Self Concept Clarity had positive effects on some sub variables on adaptive performance such as problem solving, handle crisis, cross cultural adaptability. Third, Resilience mediated the relationship between Cognitive Flexibility and Adaptive Performance(problem solving, handle crisis, cross cultural adaptability). The hypotheses of the mediation effect of resilience between Goal Orientation, Self Concept Clarity and Adaptive Performance were rejected. Lastly, this study emphasized and verified the importance of resilience in process of adaptive performance. Future studies should be looked for broad variety of resilience factors.
This study aims to understanding the effects of culture on websites with emphasis on the website structure and navigation. The website is inherently‘cultural’because anyone around the world can access to website if he or she is equipped with appropriate equipment. For the importance of cultural role in website, various researches have been conducted to understand the relationship between culture and website. However they tended to focus mainly on phenomenal matters such as color, layout, icon etc. There have been not so many thorough attempts to causal relationships between website and‘thick culture’in depth. The study conducted cross-cultural usability testing of websites between Korea and America. At first, representative I-commerce websites of Korea and America were selected and they were analyzed by the selected frameworks such as layout, display type, element type, and the relationship with homepage and sub-page navigation. The results were used to construct typical prototypes of website for Korea and America for experiment. Two websites were used for cross-cultural usability testing though specially-developed remote testing. 20 users from each country participated in the usability testing. The result shows that Korean users peformed better usability testing for Korean style structure of website while American counterparts showed better performances in American style of websites. Other various significant findings were revealed.
