  • We investigate the rate-compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes concatenated with hierarchical QAM for designing a cross-layer unequal error protection scheme for H.264 coded sequences. We first divide the H.264 encoded video slices into three priority classes based on their relative importance. We investigate the system constraints and propose an optimization formulation to compute the optimal parameters of the proposed system for the given source significance information. An upper bound to the significance-weighted bit error rate in the proposed system is derived as a function of system parameters, including the code rate and geometry of the constellation. An example is given with design rules for H.264 video communications and 3.5-4 dB PSNR improvement over existing RCPC based techniques for AWGN wireless channels is shown through simulations.

  • This study presents a modified scheme for the radar image simulation of sea waves. A simulated radar image was obtained by taking into account the dot product of the directed vector from the radar and the normal vector of the sea surface. Moreover, to calculate the radar image, we used the radar received power and radar cross section. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, the wave spectrum from field data was utilized to obtain the simulated sea waves. The radar image was simulated using numerically generated sea waves. The wave statistics from the simulation agrees comparatively with those of the original field data acquired by real radar measurements.

  • A new modified lossless intra-coding method based on a cross residual transform is applied to HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding). The HEVC standard including a multi-directional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy encodes the pixels in a PU (Prediction Unit) by using neighboring pixels. In the new modified lossless intra-coding method, the spatial prediction is performed by pixel-based DPCM but is implemented by block-based manner by using cross residual transform on the HEVC standard. The experimental results show that the new lossless intra-coding method reduces the bit rate of approximately 8.4% in comparison with the lossless-intra coding method in the HEVC standard and the proposed method results in slightly better compression ratio than the JPEG2000 lossless coding.

  • By using a semiconductor optical amplifier and a cross-phase modulation wavelength converter, fundamental all-optical logic gates including NOT, AND, NOR, XOR, and XNOR have been newly proposed and implemented. Realization of these all-optical logic gates will bring up not only all-optical networks but also all-optical computing and signal processing.

  • In this paper, a Gaussian apodization technique applied to a transmission volume hologram for holographic demultiplexer is proposed. The Gaussian apodized grating of 15 mm ${\times}$ 11mm size, $38{\mu}m$ thickness and 3.2 mm horizontal standard deviation of the Gaussian index modulation profile was fabricated. A 22-channel demultiplexer based on that grating has been optically demonstrated. The channel spacing, the interchannel cross-talk level and the channel uniformity of 0.8 nm, -30 dB and 1.5 dB, respectively, were obtained.

  • We numerically investigate the electronic band structure of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under radial corrugation. Hydrostatic pressure application to CNTs leads to a circumferential wave-like deformation of their initially circular cross-sections, called radial corrugations. Tight-binding calculation was performed to determine the band gap energy as a function of the amplitude of the radial corrugation. We found that the band gap increased with increasing radial corrugation amplitude; then, the gap started to decline at a critical amplitude and finally vanished. This non-monotonic gap variation indicated the metal-semiconductor-metal transition of CNTs with increasing corrugation amplitude. Our results provide a better insight into the structure-property relation of CNTs, thus advancing the CNT-based device development.

  • We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 2.5 Gb/s optical signals by cross-gain modulation (XGM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We investigate the effect of input pump and probe powers on the extinction ratio and power penalty to be a measure of performance in wavelength converters. As a result, we show that the best bit error rate (BER) performance can be obtained when the probe power is kept 3 dB weaker than the pump power. And we investigate the effect of wavelength detuning on performance in wavelength converters.

  • Damages on Si substrate induced by Ar ion implantation and it annealing behavior during rapid thermal annealing were investigated by the cross-sectional TEM (transmissin electron microscopy), RB(Rutherfordbackscattering) spectra an dthermal wave (TW) modulation reflectance methods. Continuous amorphous layer extending to the surface were generated by Ar ion implantation for higher doses than 1 $\times$1015cm-2. The recrystallization of the amorphous layer prodeeded as the annealing temperature increased . However the amorphous /crystal interfacial undulations caused the micro twins and damage clusters. Damage clusters generated by lower doses than 1 $\times$1015 cm-2 disappeared slowly as the annealing temperature increased, but even at 110$0^{\circ}C$ a few damage clusters still remained.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP)s have various advantages for construction material in that they are noncorrosive and very strong. FRPs are economical and effective for management and maintenance when applied to footbridge, beam or deck of the bridge, girder, and marine structure. For safety, optimal design for standard modulation of the cross section is necessary. Conditions of optimum are possibilities of domestic production, modular assembly, and structure materials cast in compressed area.

  • An all-optical read only memory utilizing cross gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) has been demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. In our demonstration, an all-optical 2-to-4 line decoder constructed with SOAs has been employed for the construction of this all-optical read only memory. Storing four characters in an American standard code for information interchange (ASCII) format has been successfully carried out. Each character consisting of seven binary bits could be read out at a rate of 10 Giga characters per second.
