  • To characterize the coating structure, diverse methods such as mercury intrusion, nitrogen adsorption and oil absorption methods have been developed and widely employed. These indirect techniques, however, have some limitation to explain the actual coating structure. Recently microscopic observation methods have been tried for analyzing structural characteristics of coating layers. Preparation of the undamaged cross section of a coating layer is essential for obtaining high quality image for analysis. In this study, distortion-free cross-section of the coating layer was prepared using a grinding and polishing technique. The coated paper was embedded in epoxy resin and cured. After curing the resin block it was ground with abrasive papers and then polished with diamond particle suspension and nylon cloth. Polished coating layer was sufficient enough to obtain undamaged cross sectional images with scanning electron microscope under backscattered electron image mode. In addition, the SEM images allowed distinction of the coating layer components. Also S/B latex film formed between pigment particles was visualized by osmium tetroxide staining. Pore size distribution and pore orientation were evaluated by image analysis from SEM cross-sectional images.

  • In this study cold rolling process for the irregular cross-sectional shape has been investigated. The product analyzed in present study is the steel cutter, which is frequently used to cut the desired shape on leather. Because steel cutter always has a irregular cross-section, after rolling process the workpiece is severely bended to every direction. The bending of the workpiece affects the processed performed after rolling such as heat treatment and grinding, then that of the workpiece becomes more severe. In this study, therefore, to prevent the bending of the workpiece to the left and right sides. rigid-plastic finite element method has been utilized and in order to find optimal roll geometry rapidly, one dimensional equal interval search technique has been also introduced. By using both rigid plastic finite element method and optimum technique, cold rolling process for the irregular cross-sectional shape has been successfully investigated.

  • Purpose: It is to compare and evaluate the change of the wear rate and phase variation of the Zirconia before and after the sintering after the grinding by a high speed equipment manufactured for the Zirconia. Methods: The specimen of the sintered Zirconia was manufactured as size of $15mm{\times}15mm{\times}2mm$. The grinding has been applied to each of all pieces of each test groups for a minute fit for each condition at same speed of 50,000 rpm by a diamond bur at high speed handpiece with injection of the air and water. For the observation of the surface before and after the sintering of the each test piece, the cross section of it was observed as 100 magnification by a scanning electron microscope after it was coated by PT, and the diffraction analysis was performed by XDR to compare the crystal phase of the Zirconia. The average surface roughness value of all specimens were evaluated. The wear test was performed at room temperature by applying a load of 1kg for 120,000 cycles for the chewing period 6 months. Wear was analyzed for the enamel cusps by measurement of the vertical substance loss with a laser scanner. Conclusion: The phase variation from the tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase was confirmed in the test group of the pre-sintered Zirconia after the grinding, and the value of the surface roughness and the wear rate was increased in experimental group.

  • Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has been increasingly used as a rapid, accurate method of evaluating some chemical compositions in forages. Analysis of forage quality by NIRS usually involves dry ground samples. Costs might be reduced if samples could be analyzed without drying or grinding. The objective of this study was to investigate effect of sample preparations and spectral math treatments on prediction ability of chemical composition for corn silage by NIRS. A population of 112 corn silage representing a wide range in chemical parameters were used in this investigation. Samples of com silage were scanned at 2nm intervals over the wavelength range 400-2500nm and the optical data recorded as log l/Reflectance(log l/R) and scanned in overt-dried grinding(ODG), liquid nitrogen grinding(LNG) or intact fresh(IF) condition. Samples were analysed for neutral detergent fiber(NDF), acid detergent fiber(ADF), acid detergent lignin(ADL), crude protein(CP) and crude ash content were expressed on a dry-matter(DM) basis. The spectral data were regressed against a range of chemical parameters using modified partial least squares(MPLS) multivariate analysis in conjunction with four spectral math treatments to reduce the effect of extraneous noise. The optimum calibrations were selected on the basis of minimizing the standard error of cross validation(SECV). The results of this study show that NIRS predicted the chemical parameters with very high degree of accuracy(the correlation coefficient of cross validation$(R^2cv)$ range from $0.70{\sim}0.95$) in ODG. The optimum equations were selected on the basis of minimizing the standard error of prediction(SEP). The Optimum sample preparation methods and spectral math treatment were for ADF, the ODG method using 2,10,5 math treatment(SEP = 0.99, $R^2v=0.93$), and for CP, the ODG method using 1,4,4 math treatment(SEP = 0.29. $R^2v=0.91$).

  • The purpose of this study was to observe the change of marginal distortion related to heat treatment and surface treatment in. Thirty copings were made on the self-curing resin dies and twenty coping among them were treated by heat and surface grinding. All copings were adapted on the respective dies and then were invested into the plastic boxes with tray resin. Both copiong and die invested in tray resin were cut through labio-lingually by a separating disc. This cross-cutting surface was ground and polished. Specimens were mounted on a light microscope and photographed. Marginal discrepancies were measured on photographes by a scale. The obtained results could be summarized in the followings : 1. In all metal copings, the distortion of cervical margin was shown after heat treatment and surface treatment. 2. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal fitness between shoulder and deep chamfer. 3. There were no statistically significant differences in marginal fitness between labial margin and lingual margin in one die. 4. In case of the copings which were not treated with preheating and were treated with surface grinding, the marginal distortion shows a tendency to increase.

  • Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has become increasingly used as a rapid, accurate method of evaluating some chemical constituents in cereal and dired animal forages. Analysis of forage quality by NIRS usually involves dry grinding samples. Costs might be reduced if samples could be analyzed without drying or grinding. The objective of this study was to investigate effect of sample preparations on prediction ability of chemical composition and fermentation parameter for Italian ryegrass silages by NIRS. A population of 147 Italian ryegrass silages representing a wide range in chemical parameters were used in this investigation. Samples were scanned at 1nm intervals over the wavelength range 680-2500 nm and the optical data recorded as log 1/Reflectance (log 1/R) and scanned in oven-dried grinding and fresh ungrinding condition. The spectral data were regressed against a range of chemical parameters using partial least squares (PLS) multivariate analysis in conjunction with four spectral math treatments to reduced the effect of extraneous noise. The optimum calibrations were selected on the basis of minimizing the standard error of cross validation (SECV) and maximizing the correlation coefficient of cross validation (${R^2}_{CV}$). The results of this study show that NIRS predicted the chemical parameters with high degree of accuracy in oven-dried grinding treatment except for moisture contents. Prediction accuracy of the moisture contents was better for fresh ungrinding treatment (SECV 1.37%, $R^2$ 0.96) than for oven-dried grinding treatments (SECV 4.31%, $R^2$ 0.68). Although the statistical indexes for accuracy of the prediction were the lower in fresh ungrinding treatment, fresh treatment may be acceptable when processing is costly or when some changes in component due to the processing are expected. Results of this experiment showed the possibility of NIRS method to predict the chemical composition and fermentation parameter of Italian ryegrass silages as routine analysis method in feeding value evaluation and for farmer advice.

  • Posterior cross-bite is a relatively frequent malocclusion in primary and early mixed dentition and the reported prevalence of posterior cross-bite varies from 7% to 23%. It has been defined as a transverse discrepancy in arch relationship which the palatal cusp of the upper posterior teeth do not occlude in the central fossa of the opposing lower teeth, and can be manifested in a single tooth or in a group of teeth. Posterior cross-bite does not often self-correct and therefore immediate treatment is recommended. Occlusal adjustment to eliminate premature contact that causes mandibular deviation, expansion of narrow maxillary arch, arrangement of the individual teeth to treat asymmetry within the dental arch are the methods of treating cross-bite. In the present case, functional posterior cross-bite was observed in the primary and the early mixed dentition children. The children were treated by the slow maxillary expansion and occlusal adjustment. The outcome of periodic examinations after the correction of cross-bite was favorable.

  • PURPOSE. Veneering porcelain might be delaminated from underlying zirconia-based ceramics. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of different surface treatments and type of zirconia (white or colored) on shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia core and its veneering porcelain. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Eighty zirconia disks (40 white and 40 colored; 10 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick) were treated with three different mechanical surface conditioning methods (Sandblasting with $110{\mu}m$ $Al_2O_3$ particle, grinding, sandblasting and liner application). One group had received no treatment. These disks were veneered with 3 mm thick and 5 mm diameter Cercon Ceram Kiss porcelain and SBS test was conducted (cross-head speed = 1 mm/min). Two and one way ANOVA, Tukey's HSD Past hoc, and T- test were selected to analyzed the data (${\alpha}=0.05$). RESULTS. In this study, the factor of different types of zirconia ceramics (P=.462) had no significant effect on SBS, but the factors of different surface modification techniques (P=.005) and interaction effect (P=.018) had a significant effect on SBS. Within colored zirconia group, there were no significant differences in mean SBS among the four surface treatment subgroups (P=0.183). Within white zirconia group, "Ground group" exhibited a significantly lower SBS value than "as milled" or control (P=0.001) and liner (P=.05) groups. CONCLUSION. Type of zirconia did not have any effect on bond strength between zirconia core and veneer ceramic. Surface treatment had different effects on the SBS of the different zirconia types and grinding dramatically decreased the SBS of white zirconia- porcelain.

  • The TEM samples prepared by ion milling have the advantage that thin area can be obtained from almost any materials. However, it has the disadvantage that the amount of thin area can often be quite limited. For the cross-sectioned samples and grossly heterogeneous materials, the thickness of less than $0.1{\mu}m$ can be achieved by mechanical grinding and polishing (tripod polisher) and then the TEM samples may be ion-milled for final thinning or cleaning. These approaches were described in this paper. Examples of TEM observations were taken from cross-section samples of thin films on silicon and sapphire, from diffusion layers between $Mo_5Si_3\;and\;Mo_2B$, and from rapidly solidified 304 stainless steel powders embedded in electroplated copper.
