  • Language Capital is one of the most important academic abilities and competencies for new era of globalization worldwide. In Europe and Asia where English is not the native language, it is necessary to encourage higher education to improve language competency from both qualitative and quantitative aspects. In so far as online university concerned, it appears of significance to prepare for globalization from the perspective of cross border education, and it needs to focus on how to design and develop English-medium teaching (EMT) or in other words English mediated instruction(EMI) for both teachers and students. In order to provide supportive programs of English-mediated class for teachers and students, the study examined and analyzed what abilities are needed for teachers based on DACUUM approach, suggesting teachers' competency as well as strategies for online- EMT. Based on literature review, DACUUM analysis, focus group interview with teachers and students who experienced online EMT, online programs supporting both teachers and students for online EMI were developed. This program expects to play roles of practical guidelines and reference for both teachers and students online in an extension of language capital improvement.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the priming effect in Korean and English word production by Korean speakers. Picture-naming with distractors was used as experimental task. The type of target language, the type of distractor language and SOA(Stimulus Onset Asynchrony) were used as variables. Cross-linguistic priming effect and within-linguistic priming effect were mesured to investigate bilinguals' conceptual system.

  • The primary goal of this study is to find out how the effect of speaking rate has some influence on the production and perception across languages. Through both experiments of production and perception, an English native speaker changes both production and perception simultaneously. Especially the production of the temporal features changes relatively fast. On the contrary, Chinese and Korean speakers changes their production rather than perception by following the speaking rate.

  • There have been some notes on the functional unity of rules or conspiracy in Linguistics. In this paper, I show that so-called 'elsewhere condition', first mentioned in phonology, is observed not only in phonology, but also in morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. And I argue that it is a kind of functional unity of rules or conspiracy in cross-component of linguistic theories. How to handle this in the macro-scopic view of linguist ice is another major issue in further research.

  • This paper examines Case alternation within DP. Four previous accounts dealing with Case alternation within DP will be critically examined. We conclude that a phenomenon looking like Case alternation within Korean DPs is not an instance of Case alternation. We argue that the genitive subject within such DPs is actually in the Spec position of a Small Clause, which involves a verb movement into what is now called vP. From a cross-linguistic point of view, this analysis supports Harley & Noyer's(1997) argument that Gerunds are instances of Small Clauses.

  • This study investigated the contribution of Korean phonological awareness to English phonological awareness and the relations of phonological awareness with reading and writing in Korean Hangul and English among Korean 5th graders. With age and vocabulary knowledge statistically controlled, Korean phonological awareness was transferred to English phonological awareness. Specifically, syllable and phoneme awareness in Korean transferred to syllable awareness in English, and Korean phoneme awareness transferred to English phoneme awareness. In addition, English phoneme awareness independently explained significant variance of reading and writing in Korean and English after controlling for age and vocabulary. Syllable awareness in Korean and English explained Hangul reading and writing, respectively. The results suggest cross-language transfer of phonological awareness that is a metalinguistic skill. Phoneme awareness is important in reading and writing in English whereas both of syllable and phoneme awareness are important in literacy of Korean.

  • The medical thesaurus, MeSH (Medical Subject Heading), has been used as a controlled vocabulary thesaurus for English medical paper indexing for a long time. In this paper, we propose an automatic cross language keyword assignment method, which assigns English MeSH index terms to the abstract of a Korean medical paper. We compare the performance with the indexing performance of human indexers and the authors. The procedure of index term assignment is that first extracting Korean MeSH terms from text, changing these terms into the corresponding English MeSH terms, and calculating the importance of the terms to find the highest rank terms as the keywords. For the process, an effective method to solve spacing variants problem is proposed. Experiment showed that the method solved the spacing variant problem and reduced the thesaurus space by about 42%. And the experiment also showed that the performance of automatic keyword assignment is much less than that of human indexers but is as good as that of authors.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose actual operation condition of Japanese lecture based on social welfare organizations located in Seoul to investigate the current status and problems of Japanese language education in terms of lifelong education. According to the result of this study, the remarkable point was that a majority of Japanese lecture courses are highly focused on the elderly and 86% of the welfare organizations are providing free education. Regarding the effect of specialized business for the aged run by social welfare community center, it says, as Korea changing to aging society at the beginning of 21st century, it has put focus on strengthening personal competences of seniors through opportunities for participation in lifelong education, recreational activity programs and culture classes. It means foreign language classes are operating as one of the lifelong education programs for reinforcement of individual capability. Considering this tendency, it is expected that the lifelong education participation rate of the elder in Seoul will be raised. So, systematic improvements will be needed for this. First, it is required to recognize the existence of Educational and Cultural Industry and work hard to make it public so it could be invigorated and utilized by people usefully at the same time. Second, Japanese language training that mostly 55-year-old or more than 60-year-old people receive at the welfare center needs to be systematized for preparations on proper studying environment which provides the older with appropriate education method and content as well. Third, stable and systematic operation should be available through the link with experts in the field of Japanese language education and elderly education. Fourth, education program development is needed, which is able to satisfy one's desires for learning. Hence, targeting Japanese learners at each welfare center, we need to know the estimation of satisfaction degree and consciousness on learning Japanese. Finally, it has not been studied sufficiently regarding the instructors on teaching Japanese language in this paper, but it has been reported that most of social welfare centers, where Japanese language lectures are provided, are run by volunteers who can teach Japanese. Thus, the study on actual condition for Japanese language instructors will be conducted as well later on.
